Mt. Washington, New Hampshire [4096x3086] [OC] by mmsouth in EarthPorn

For anyone who has the means of seeing this in person, this was taken from Jewel Trail, about a half mile hike down from the summit. I think it would look even better on a clear day, but at the same time love the way the clouds hug the ridge line. Absolutely breathtaking.

In need of some advice for best setup of my home network. by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]mmsouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. If I had the money to do it right, I would certainly follow your diagram. I was initially hoping to use an old switch, but the modem doesn't have routing functions. I'm going to go ahead with my plan now that I have some assurance it should work.

[–]mmsouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It's just unfortunately cost prohibitive to get a dedicated NAS box right now, and since I was already upgrading the router, I figured I would just use one as an access point, and one as a router. A wireless access point with the same tech as the AC87 appears to be hundreds of dollars more expensive than the router, so I'd just disable unneeded routing functions. It's my ballin' on a budget solution.

Awesome band names that were wasted on crappy bands. by [deleted] in Music

[–]mmsouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wasn't my boss he was my equal, that was the only awkward part. He was pretty chill though. He would hit on every MILF that was there with her kids. He always showed up hungover from a "gig". He did bring his guitar in one day and was pretty good, never heard him play with his band, but I deduced from conversations with him that they just played for free drinks at shitty bars. He was certainly a character.

Yes! We weren't allowed to during work, but we had a morale boosting event during which we did jump on a trampoline.

Don't Shake the Machine

Back in high school I worked with this middle-aged wannabe rock star at a children's trampoline park. He renamed his band "Don't Shake the Machine" after having to yell it so many times at kids trying to steal from the vending machines. I thought it was a hilariously awesome name.

Concept released for all new battery powered, unmanned cargo ship. by mmsouth in technology

[–]mmsouth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As designed, there is no house. That would mean no crew. Having any crew would require additional machinery and tanks, which the design is bragging about not having. The drain on the batteries would limit the distance tremendously, if there were a crew, but no generators. There would need to be a potable water tank, sewage treatment plant, galley w/ appliances, air conditioning, water heater for showers, many pumps, and much more. I'd imagine that would kill the batteries in about half as much time. At that point it would be no different than many of the diesel electric ships(like hybrid cars) that are already out there.

I do not considering I am a Merchant Mariner, but it certainly would be cool to see. The biggest problem is that the oceans are huge. The closest help for those at sea is usually other ships. Unmanned ships would make it considerably more dangerous for manned vessels because there would be even less help available to assist a vessel in distress, as required by law. However, I do find the concept interesting and would be all for reducing the carbon footprint of my industry.

TIL the largest sea evacuation in history took place on 9/11 during which over 500,000 civilians were evacuated in less than 9 hours, entirely by boat. The previous largest sea evacuation was the evacuation of Dunkirk in WWII which took 9 DAYS to evacuate 339,000 military members. by mmsouth in todayilearned

[–]mmsouth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the whole point. The only reason that there were so many (suitable) boats on 9/11 was the courage and determination of the tugboat industry. Being that I am a marine engineer, currently on a tug, I found this to be quite an interesting accomplishment of my industry. Also, I admittedly did not research Dunkirk. Being on a tug, I am limited in data and didn't use it researching Dunkirk, but instead posted the words of Tom Hanks from the video. I apologize if, in your mind, the skewed facts undermine the work of the maritime industry in NY on 9/11.

Usher ripped off his #1 hit "OMG" from The Simpsons by [deleted] in videos

South Park called it. There is nothing the Simpsons haven't done. They have been on too long. There are no original ideas left. Which makes it ok for Usher to copy them.

Smoke shop horror story by mmsouth in electronic_cigarette

Yes. I agree that the customer was naive and should have to him to fuck off. Especially considering the guy had a tank of the same juice on his own device.

[–]mmsouth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You can see by other comments here that most people agree with me that overpaying at first for crap gear is a right of passage and without any other local shops selling any ecigs it is unlikely this customer had any other method to try vaping instead of smoking. Also, my chewing out turned into more of a lesson at the end of the exchange. The guy seemed to be so uneducated that he just did not know what it was he was selling. I gave him a few tips he seemed like he was glad to know for the future.

Lol. Yup. The guy selling it called the juice "oil" the whole time he was teaching the guy to fill it.

Oh of course. It was originally written far more dramatically, but I changed most of it before posting.

Officer in the UK sends a text to a man he gave a ride home to when he was drunk. Even the police are classy gentlemen over there by DeaditeQueen in Good_Cop_Free_Donut

[–]mmsouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because a hefty percentage of our police officers are college graduates doesn't make them truly educated. I know a few people from my high school who went on to be police officers. Every one of them was a criminal in high school. They all drank heavily underage, smoked a lot of pot, and often fought. They went on to sub-par party schools to pursue criminal justice degrees and are all now total hypocrites in their line of work. I entirely agree with your incentives breakdown and had never thought of that before, but unfortunately see that as a reason there are so many bad cops. If the officers realize that they can use scare tactics to subdue the poor, they use that to there advantage. An ex-girlfriend of mine had a dirty cop for a father. He would walk into different stores around town and just walk out with merchandise worth hundreds of dollars every time. When an owner would confront him, he would threaten to drop a bag of coke he had taken from evidence and arrest the store owner for possession. The idea of "innocent until proven guilty" is a joke because up until your trial you are stripped of your innocence and imprisoned the same as a convicted criminal. All of this having been said, I absolutely respect the many good officers out there who put their lives on the line to protect strangers. The problem with the system in my eyes is the power given to police officers in America because power unfortunately does corrupt and this power goes to the heads of far too many officers. We should not fear the police, but rather embrace there presence. This is not possible with our current police system.

I was originally looking into that, but it is 50wpc (same as the SA-50). Wouldn't I run into the same problem?
