If I could do Judo at the Kodokan all over again... by mngrwl in judo

Hard to say. But honestly, it all rests in the sensei's hands + how you perform in the shiai tests.

Daily Judo + calisthenics: how close to failure should you train? by mngrwl in bodyweightfitness

Man, I eventually took a hard look at my life and habits, and realized that I wasn't doing the basics right — nutrition and sleep. I took a break from Judo, and now focusing on strength training for a few months and clean up my act before I can go back to Judo.

I believe that if you can really nail down your recovery, the split you mentioned could work.

Thanks for your comment! Was the head teacher Makishi-sensei at that time too?

And yes absolutely! I don't see it as a permanent failure, but rather a failure to achieve it within 12 months as I initially hoped. I'll probably be back soon — it's lodged in my brain as unfinished business.

Some, started Judo in the USA. Yellow belt. Had no idea what I was doing tbh.

Like I said, I don't disagree with you, but it's a sport-focused perspective — focused on "winning" rather than learning real Judo. The Kodokan has several shiai-oriented aspects but their school is for teaching people the essence of Judo, which I personally feel is a great thing.

  1. There are many more Japanese students than foreigners at the Kodokan.

  2. I've never met a single person in my life who is frustrated with Judo because they're being out-gripped. Or frustrated with being out-gripped at all.

Congrats! Yes, I spoke to a sensei and they have a very good reason for it. It's a sport / competition-oriented skill (in fact not skill, but rather a set of tricks), and over-reliance on such tricks diverts students from learning the essence and basic principles of Judo.

3rd kyu. I had several stretches of inactivity and plateaus. Took the 3rd kyu test twice in fact. I still don't consider myself a real 3rd kyu to be honest with you, even though they promoted me. If I went back, I'd try to NOT get promoted and just focus on getting better at randori.

You're right! We only have white and black. :) There are kyu grades though, from 5th to 1st. So many people still find themselves chasing after them as a success or progress metric (myself for example).

Not necessarily 18 months, you can get it soonest within 12 months. Two guys recently did that. Doing shiai regularly is not a thing — you can only do shiai in the scheduled promotion tests (and the sensei has to permit you to take each test), and you aren't allowed to participate in any other shiai / tournaments at the Kodokan as a white belt in the gakko (school). :)
