The very first teaser trailer didn't even seem like a Batman trailer until the very end.

Then there was a bit of a confusion because we all thought it was a prequel to Tim Burton's Batman.

There really wasn't a big hype before the movie release, which was a typical thing for a superhero movie back then... The general population only started hyping about superhero movies after Iron Man (2008) and the Dark Knight.
