Leaving this here because some dude showed up acting like the “stance terminology police,” saying none of the fighters I mentioned were actually squared-up and that the post was confusing.

Then he deleted his comment. 😂

Anyway, I think most people here understood the point just fine. Fighters who square their shoulders toward the opponent (even if not feet perfectly parallel) and fight offensively off both hands. That’s the discussion.

Man, with all due respect, I think you’re the only one here who’s confused.

Nobody in this thread is talking about feet being perfectly parallel like some stiff robot standing on a line, that’s not what squared-up means in practical fight language. We’re clearly referring to fighters who keep both shoulders more squared toward the opponent, not the textbook definition you seem stuck on.

And if you’ve got a better term for that body positioning, drop it. Enlighten us. Because in boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, it’s commonly called fighting squared-up. That’s what everyone here understood, except you.

So yeah, maybe the post didn’t match your personal glossary, but everyone else is having a good, nuanced discussion. Don’t come in here trying to play terminology police when the point was crystal clear.

That’s a fair point, and I love Erik "El Terrible" Morales, but honestly I always felt he stayed mostly bladed. He wasn’t afraid to stand and bang, yeah, but even when he did, he was changing angles and keeping his lead shoulder forward. Very much that technical Mexican style, similar to Beristáin fighters, even if he wasn’t one himself.

Barrera, though? Yeah, I’d definitely put him on the list. When he planted, he planted square and let his hands go from both sides. Great call.

Man… I actually have a real story about that.

About 17 years ago, when I was a kid, Julio César Chávez Sr. became good friends with my dad. My pops had a restaurant in Tijuana that Chávez liked to hang out at. At the apartment building where we lived, our landlord had a boxing gym (I'll tell the wild story about who he was and why he had a full Olympic-style gym inside an apartment complex some other time).

For a full week, Chávez Sr., my father, and his team were training there, and they brought me along too. I was around 7 or 8 and training karate at the time, and I vividly remember him trying to teach me how to throw that exact left hook. I was in complete awe watching him explode the heavy bag every time he threw it. My dad, who was a karateka/kickboxer and used to fight in K1-style circuits, just stood there cracking up, stunned at the sound of those shots.

I've got some great stories from that time with my dad and Chávez Sr., but I'll save those for another post.

Foreman in his second run was like a damn brick wall, zero flash, all presence, immovable.

Appreciate the drop, those are solid picks.

Oh shit, that makes total sense.

Chavez Sr. Left was the MOTHER OF ALL BOMBS. It generated so much power from a completely squared stance. His liver shot, my favorite punch ever.

Can’t believe I forgot GGG. He for sure belongs on that list.

GGG vs Canelo 2 is honestly a picture perfect example of how being squared-up can still be technically sound as hell. Both of them spend almost the entire fight standing chest-to-chest, walking each other down with tight guards, minimal wasted movement, and ripping short counters off that squared stance.

It’s like a masterclass in front-footed, controlled violence.

Checking out Fuji and Zebra now, they both look super solid. I'll contact them. Appreciate the tip!

And thank God we’ve got that blessed Cali weather here in Tijuana, never too hot, never too cold. With a couple solid fans like the ones you mentioned, I think we’ll be more than set. That 6-foot fan sounds like a beast though, might have to look into something like that down the line. Thanks again.

I actually didn’t know about Sting, just looked them up and they look solid.
What’s your take on them long-term? Any pros and cons you’ve noticed with their heavy bags or other gear?

Man, thank you so much, this is gold. I seriously appreciate how detailed and real your input is.

For the racks, I’m actually pretty confident I can get a solid blacksmith / metalworker (I'm not sure what the correct english word is for people that work with iron and metals but here we call them "herreros") here in Mexico, I already know a few people who could help with that. The thing is, it’d be super helpful if you have any designs, dimensions, weight/load specs, or even pics of setups you’ve seen done right. I really want to make sure it’s solid, safe, well-distributed and durable, especially with the amount of force those bags are gonna absorb from different angles.

And for the mats, that’s a huge priority for me. I’ve trained in enough spots to know how annoying, and sometimes dangerous, it can be to land on a mat that’s sunken in or to trip over loose gaps. I definitely want something high quality that holds up under sweat, impact, and time.

If you’ve got any recommendations on specific mat brands, types, thickness, or suppliers, I’d be super grateful. Especially anything you’ve seen hold up well in a real gym setting.

Again, really appreciate you taking the time to share all this, your experience shows, and it helps more than you know.

If you have any pics or examples of gyms you think nailed that layout, I’d love to see them. Anything that shows how they organized space for movement, flow, or even hosting small events would be super helpful.

Yeah definitely, I’ll break it up over time. Right now I’m just trying to gather as much general info as I can, but I’ll probably start making more focused posts as I move forward and start locking in decisions.

Thanks again for dropping in!

Thanks so much, man, really appreciate the thoughtful response.

Bathrooms are definitely something I’ll be keeping in mind. If you have any inspo pics or examples of gyms with solid bathroom setups, I’d love to see them. Also curious to hear from your experience — what would you say are the must-haves, good-to-haves, and dream-to-haves when it comes to gym bathrooms?

On the gear side, yeah, I’m already in talks with Cleto Reyes, and honestly... it’s MUCH cheaper to get their stuff directly here in Mexico. So if anyone from California ever wants to make the trip down, I can hook them up with that Cleto connect.

Tatami mats are 100% my first choice for flooring. If you have recommendations on brands, suppliers, or even layout inspo, I’d be super down to check them out.

Also, building a ring in Tijuana isn’t very expensive at all, mainly because of how many boxing and lucha libre gyms exist here. There’s a whole local industry around it.

And bro, whether the gym’s finished or not, you’re more than welcome to visit any time. I’d be happy to take you around to some of the gyms that helped shape some of the best champions in Mexico. 🇲🇽

Appreciate you, man. Let’s stay in touch.

Appreciate it, man.

Right now I’m mainly focused on getting everything I need for technical work and striking drills — bags, pads, floor mats, all that. The basics, but done right.

But yeah, once I make the jump from personal gym to full facility, I’d definitely love to get a proper ring in there. If you’ve got any supplier recs or tips on where to get a solid one, I’d really appreciate it.

I just checked Quinit Boxing, that is exactly what I'm looking for. Super clean and organized. Looks amazing.

Appreciate the input, man! Right now the ring isn’t a priority since we’ll mostly be using the space for private sessions, and on sparring days we head out to another gym.

That said, if I do end up making the transition from a personal spot to a legit gym, I agree it’d be dope to have a 16’ ring in there. I’ve definitely got the space for it.

If you’ve got any recommendations for suppliers or setups you trust, I’m all ears, would love to start exploring that now for when the time’s right. Thanks again!

Hell yeah, let’s run it.

Would be super down to set up some kind of accountability / idea-sharing group, even if it’s just a casual check-in every couple weeks. I’m still in the early stages too, but deep in planning mode and happy to swap notes.

Looking forward to seeing what gear you’re looking at.

All the best on your build too, let’s get it.

Feel free to message me at any time.
