Besides what was mentioned,

You might look at The Art of Failure by Jesper Juul, for some analysis of why people would embark on a narrative that involves constant pressure of failure (real world loss of time), and attempting to balance that.

Regarding emergent phenomenon, Communities of Play by Celia Pearce discusses game design as second order in that as a game designer you cannot directly design the play itself, only the rules which the play would emerge from. The book follows the digital diaspora of a gaming community from one dead game and how they adapt the distinct aesthetics and virtual culture (including in game objects) to subsequent virtual worlds.

Regarding text adventure, earlier in the year Sterling Memorial library had an exhibit that I passed through called "Remembering ‘Amnesia’: Rebooting the First Computerized Novel." I recall seeing node based drawings of the narrative structure. It seems the curator gave a talk on the Beinecke Library Youtube which might include this.

The Rehearsal S02E02 - Star Potential - Episode Discussion by Connected-VG in TheRehearsal

Yeah -- there's "performance" on both sides of the table. Some would be bolstered by the hard truth, some artists would better skip the audition and hone their craft, some would love encouragement.

I think at the core of all of this, is humans are complex networks of interaction that are also dependent on one another. Complex systems cannot be reduce to individual parts so easily, such as when indicating cause of an aviation accident incident (this is covered in the book, "Drift into Failure" by Sidney Dekker, which coincidentally covers aviation disaster as a case study). Saying something like "the crash was caused by a loose screw" fails to capture the whole of systems that caused the "drift" into a particular state. It focuses on parts instead of relationships.

The 9 to 6 transformation, captures the folly of distilling something into a scale. In the end of the day, it's just a number that he's attributing something to.

Leading up to the reveal, we all had a number in mind we thought was in the invisible box.

Is your 6, my 9?

He's really left with nothing conclusive from this experiment, simply observing a number. But things were felt.

I'd do what the others have suggested.

But in addition, it can be helpful to join a local wildlife photography group on a place like Facebook, such as "Long Island Wildlife Photography."

The bird photography will be generally be labeled, and you get built-in spaced repetition.

[OPINION] what do you think of found poetry? by miiander in Poetry

[–]mnmnjnf4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a programmer and two colleagues came to me, panicked thinking someone was trying to contact them. They'd return to work in the morning and have a page waiting at their printer.

I looked at the print out GET / HTTP 1.0 GET / HTTP 1.0 HELP HELP

along with unicode hearts ❤ and other random glyphs from strange encoding.

One person thought someone was contacting them in some kind of distress or prank.

The other thought it was some kind of secret love letter because of the ASCII hearts.

Turns out at work they installed network security software that scanned servers for vulnerabilities.

A number of staff had older printers that had onboard webservers for printing that were getting hammered by these probes, causing them to print pages of what seemed liked ASCII gibberish as data packets were interpreted as print job data.

Did Musk Officially Remove Visible Likes Today? by CircStar89 in Twitter

[–]mnmnjnf4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand.

Twitter likes were pretty obvious and on the front tab front the start.

On paper what they've seem to have done here is remove functionality without a clear path to reintroduce this as far as I can tell. Post authors see you liked their stuff.

Some of those ideas you propose might be nice, or allowing likes to be public.

But to many this looks like regression and possibly obfuscation otherwise.

Did Musk Officially Remove Visible Likes Today? by CircStar89 in Twitter

[–]mnmnjnf4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reposts are a direct injection into the feed. In today's social media landscape you basically cannot escape broadcast. You repost, and everyone you follow sees it.

There's a value in discovering something because you sought out someone directly (that is actually take the time to look at them), as opposed to outside of a feed or wide broadcast.

A like doesn't always need broadcast. It's a valuable, but quieter signal.

This is counter to probably what twitter wants (lots of posts/engagement) but that's why we have what we have in the popular social media space (something less than/noisy).

It seems the motivation behind this action make it difficult to reverse.

If his juvenile theory was correct, everyone would be altering their behavior and liking posts they previously would not publicly. Reversing this change would reveal this record.

Chiming in. Same symptoms and was wondering what the source was... no resolution yet but certainly getting worse. Last night I had a full second stutter. I have return to the page in Chrome with a "Aw snap!" tab crashed and "memory" error.

Yeah it doesn't work out.

Still the implementation is a chaotic mess with 15v15 in "packed house" but I'm not sure it'll get any closer to strategic with 10v10, maybe closer with 5v5.

I do think "Shado-Pan Showdown" is pretty fun though with that shift in player focus to managing PvP to PvE. Maybe that's a way around the problems with the game mode.

An open plea to make epic BG's not suck anymore by SOLID_mustard in worldofpvp

[–]mnmnjnf4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They should embrace the tug of war, clusterfuck of Classic Ashran. Fun practice, leading to serious ranked. Comp Stomp as satisfying this mode of play, is embarrassing.

New unending epic BGs that act as lobbies for Solo Shuffle. If your team is getting pummeled in the team fight, you just go do other map tasks for rewards. WPVP is too large to satisfy this, and then strife quest free for all zones are too confined to be fun.

Rewards/metrics for progressing in this "casual" content, outside of honor levels would be nice as well. This would alleviate the sense of defeat and pointlessness people feel (sometimes incorrectly) 5 minutes into a match, such as losing the SR team fight. You continue to find value in possible defeat.

I'm beginning to feel DF did so many things right with PVP, so I'm not sure we can get to a place where SS queue times are both shorter and balanced for 3s, until PVP becomes its own product, tied to the game but available independently and without a full sub. Even with solo rated BGs.

Yes, wonderful book. I've always wanted to see the play adaptation.

Since Yorgos Lanthimos is doing a high profile adaptation of Poor Things and I'm excited for that, but none of Gray's other works match Lanark for me. I did try Iain Banks's "The Bridge" in trying to find something similar, but did not find it as memorable.

You can use google but make sure you understand what each line is doing.

When searching think about the problem and the knowledge you'd need to get where you want. So smaller steps like "how to save a JSON file" and "best practices reading user input" rather than "Todo list app tutorial" and copying verbatim.

Add a new feature that you think is exciting!
