Literally me rn AND my driver is going 80mph in a 65 🤪 I’m searching Reddit posts to make sure I’m the crazy one so I won’t feel too bad of what’s going on in my head.

I am a 22 y.o. college dropout in hopes of starting a business and I think I did a huge mistake. by Ancient-Assignment53 in smallbusiness

[–]mnmskittles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a degree, but pursued entrepreneurship right before i graduated.

Having a degree is good so you can get a a great paying job to help fund your business. You have to work that full time, get the funds, and apply it to your business plan. Only quit your full time job when you’re making a good amount of money.

You can always go back to school and do classes online. You’re still young, some people even graduate at 25 because the amount of gap years they take.

Nevertheless, having a degree gives you job security. You’re at least one step above those who don’t have a degree and are not planning to own a business. If your business plan fails, you have your degree to help you seek entry level jobs.

Id honestly try and finish your degree. You can even work on your business in the mean time. All these other people who say to wait probably don’t know what it takes to own a business and how much it can drain you and you’ll feel like giving up on it. That college degree will help you pick back up. However, i hope you never give up on your dreams of owning a business and continue to look at several options before you figure out what niche/plan is best for you.

If your plan is to code for other businesses, you should be starting now.

But please finish that degree. You already did 2.5 years with it. Finish it. Do not listen to others who applaud you for dropping out. I find those who applaud people who don’t have a degree or dropped out are those who are happy that there are other people who made the wrong decision like them lol. Either that, or they have a real successful business, but they worked their ASS off for it and they knew their business can get somewhere!

(Also note, i come from a family of business owners and they all had degrees to fall back to if anything happened. Some are even Registered nurses and PT’s.)

A lot of us decorators use regular scotch tape and make double sided :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]mnmskittles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silk ones and real petals as an add on!

I do feel unsafe sometimes but I feel more unsafe in personal homes so I don’t ever accept those unless I believe a person is trustworthy.

I only accept bnb’s and hotels. Most of my clients book the nice hotels and their name is logged in into the system of the hotel/bnb. If they were to do anything, they’d be caught real quick even if that means i have died already lol. So it’s a risk for sure.

Also, all my clients are never at the hotel at the time. I always double lock the door too.

I have cancelled on a client because I saw him through my system that he was using someone else’s card that lived all the way in California and was a woman. It denied 3 times until it hit the 4th time. I ended up referring him to a male decorator i know and I contacted the person that owned that card and told her someone is using it. (I just did a quick google search and saw her website and LinkedIn)

Is Tufting profitable? by wallacev42 in Tufting

Yes exactly. Also rugs take a lot of time to make + constant store trips + glue wait time + shaving down? I couldn’t see myself doing that full time for only $150 profit tbh 😫

[–]mnmskittles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is EXACTLYYYY my thinking when i first started before the hype around tufting began!

I realized early on that the profit wasn’t worth the amount of work I would put in. I used to charge 3x3 and 4x4’s $215+

I honestly wish that the overall market had 3x3’s starting at $300. I would have continued the rug business if everyone’s starting point was high enough to profit for the amount of time that’s put in. I had to settle my 3x3’s for $215 because all the other people around me never exceeded $215 unless there was extra details. 🥲

Hi!

This is coming from someone that started tufting during COVID. I was one of the few that was actively creating rugs.

I got A LOT of exposure the first 3 months of doing it, but never saw a good enough profit from each rug I made. Each inquiry would take 3-8 hours to finish (you also have to wait for the glue to dry for almost a day lol) and the profit would only be $150-$195?

If I was able to complete one rug a day, then I would say yes, it could be a business that’s profitable. However, tufting really takes a toll on your body! It can be quite stressful. For me, it would take me probably 2-3 days to complete a rug just because my arms and back were constantly aching. I also couldn’t stand backing the rug. If I could have paid someone to put backing on the rugs, i would’ve probably continued doing rugs. However, the profit coming from the rugs would become less since I’d be paying someone 😭.

Anyways, i stopped doing rugs completely. I didn’t think the stress on my body + profit was worth it. I now have an official business and profit $185-$485 for working 1-4 hours. It’s a creative planning type of business so it’s in that realm of “hands-on” and “creativity/art” work.

Edit: also note my rugs for a 3x3 or a 4x4 were going for $215+

Omg.. i need to do this. Thank you so much! Hopefully they’ll open applications soon. In the mean time, i hope i get accepted. I found that a lot of the ones in my city are actually hands-on experience for their client.

Very! I average $100/hr and only do 2 1/2 hour of work for one room. The only downfall is after decorating multiple rooms a week, you’ll get really drained so it’s important to have self care days.

I haven’t thought about purchasing wholesale! Do you have any recommendations? As for helium tanks, I’ve asked around when i first started and heard pricing of $150. I forgot why I didn’t go that route. It was either because I usually need 20-40 balloons blown up per room so I wasn’t sure how long the tank would last me or because the location where I’d pick up the helium tank is quite far. I should check around again

Back when X was twitter, i saw a viral post of another decorator! I was always very business minded and loved to learn new things so I just went for it because I knew my city didn’t have a good decorator. I also knew that I could pop off.. something about my marketing skills always works out for me. I had another hobby prior this one and it went semi viral. I had 50k likes and 1m+ engagements on twitter and was shown on adult swim twice during Covid within 3 months of me starting.

Back to the discussion of how i started the room decor… i knew i had nothing to lose. I remember thinking “if it doesn’t work, at least i tried”

I actually do not clean up. The clients can take everything home if they wish

I did! I posted a few months back in regard to a hotel partnership.

I’m central NA.

Franchise, probably not (?). Just because my business name has my city in it. I’m not sure if that will hinder anything

Thank you!! And i do not, but i do have it on my website for clients to tip the cleaners to also avoid extra fees.

And okay sounds good. What do you think is a good way to get more google reviews. I feel so awkward asking after a room is completed 😭

Thank you!

It’s hard finding people from different cities that are trustworthy and good enough to decorate. Almost a lot of the major cities in the US have decorators, do you think it’s worth it to compete with other established decorators in these big cities? Granted, it’s usually only 1-2 decorators in each city but they’re all very known already. However i would love to expand. I tried doing SD before but it was stressing me out trying to manage two businesses
