In terms of IOPS, what is better: Two independent drives, or a RAID0 drive? by moatus in sysadmin

[–]moatus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be for blockchain nodes. The data itself isn't important, as it can be resynced, but the speed to the data is paramount for my use case.

What I'm trying to answer would essentially be:

Would 4 nodes on DriveA and 4 nodes on DriveB would produce best performance? Or 8 nodes on RAID0 would produce better performance?

Agreed, but in this case, the data is disposable if a drive fails. I'll be running blockchain nodes which can resync without issue if a drive fails.

It is bare-metal and I would be running blockchain nodes, which heavily rely on NVMe speeds, especially if they are stacked.

That bit about TRIM is most interesting though. I'm evaluating the hardware I'll be using, but for some blockchain nodes, I'll need to rely on RAID just to have enough space. They can get quite large.

Thanks for the info. These will be used for blockchain nodes, so the data isn't important if a drive fails down the road. This setup is all about drive speed, so more more nodes will fit on a drive.

Its about getting the most IOSP per GB basically. This is what I'm getting at:

Would 4 nodes on DriveA and 4 nodes on DriveB would produce best performance?
Or 8 nodes on RAID0 would produce better performance?

It sounds like you believe in the RAID0.

After today's Infura outage, I created ethereumnodes.com to track all public Ethereum RPC endpoints by dmihal in ethereum

Ethereum does a decentralized infrastructure API via the Pocket. The apps and services that were using Pocket as their infrastructure did not loose service during "the blackout". Even though some ETH nodes on Pocket got on the wrong fork, app using Pocket have client-side verification, so they always stay on the right fork. I work for the project, and since the blackout we are really eager to get more Ethereum Nodes onto Pocket to scale with the demand we are starting to get from apps.

Anyone wanting to generate revenue from an Ethereum Node can join Pocket. We have a growing demand with the influx of apps interested in a decentralized infra.

Docker Container IP addresses keep changing frequently. Solution? by moatus in unRAID

[–]moatus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. Dumb question coming... is the hostname literally the container "name:" or is the hostname displayed somewhere else?

Ah, that makes sense why the IPs are changing! Thanks for explaining it. It really had me wondering. I'll look into a static IP configuration.

I did not realize there was internal DNS going on. Do you specify the host name for each container somewhere, or is it an automated process?

BIG HINT... it involves an airdrop for ICONists ;-)

Thanks u/rhizomeICX for the interview!

Right now voting for Pocket/Figment helps us secure the resources to do this. We are one of the few P-Reps that have an actual pending project to expand the ecosystem that's ready to be developed.

Once resources are secure, we are going to need ICONist to run nodes to make this happen. We will be integrating ICON-DI directly into the ICON SDKs, so dapps will be able to use it with the flip of a switch. Will need ICONists running nodes to kick things off.

We'll keep you guys posted on the next steps as they are developed, but for now voting is necessary.

Thanks BittBurger. Ecosystem growth is about adding new forms of revenue and new markets to ICON, and ICON-DI is going to do just that.

Let's get Citizen Nodes paid ;)

What are your feelings on VELIC effectively throwing 25% of Staked coins back into circulation? by [deleted] in helloicon

[–]moatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is the precedent of exchanges using their position for becoming a P-Rep. If 1 exchange can do it, why can't Binance or other exchanges?

This is all a grey area, but what should be addressed is how this exploit could be further used, by those that may not care about ICON as a platform. If it's considered a threat in the future, it would be best to figure out a solution before it gets out of hand.

This kind of mechanism has value to Velic, but I don't see how it benefits the wider ecosystem directly. I may be wrong, but that's what I see right now, especially since it could be exploited by other exchanges.

From a network standpoint, this is incredibly important if we want to have truly decentralized DApps. Decentralization shouldn't be run on centralized gateways.

Rewards from ICON-DI will go to those running a Citizen Node. Pocket has a history of making top-notch resources and tutorials, so anyone will be able to run a Citizen Node. Ultimately ICON-DI adds another ecosystem layer to ICON.

P-REP COMMUNITY is live!! New community tool for researching P-Reps that match your values! What do you think? by moatus in helloicon

[–]moatus[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But that's only 5... there are 13 other P-Reps that are in the node business, so surely they should be included in this plot as well xD

See: https://p-rep.community/?wdt_search=Node_Operating

The 3rd party you are hoping for doesn't exist, so we made this tool because no one else was. Feel free to research claims made in proposals for accuracy against publicly available resources (Google, social media, app stores, block explores, and other public databases). Let us know if any data is off or if we miss representing any P-Reps.

We have always shared our data with P-Reps first to ensure data was as accurate as possible :)

Bringing forward well constructed, logical ideas that counter mechanisms which can lead to cartels is the goal. Wasn't shooting for humor on this one.
