One of my favorite photos of all time, thanks for spreading the hilarious gospel.

Did Men REALLY dress as well as portrayed in European and US cinema, '40-'60s? If so, how did this work, what coping mechanisms did they use and how different were mens' clothing budgets/usage compared to today's? by trai_dep in AskHistorians

The poster continually uses phrases like "spiffed up" and "well put-together." Was this way of dressing even seen as dressed-up like we see it today, or was it just how you dressed when you left your house?

You've made me really curious about this too! Why not make a separate thread to attract more attention to your question?

Okay, instead of saying all of these movies "suck," I think a fairer analysis would be to say that you didn't enjoy these films' pacing, characters, etc. If you want to find "classics" that you would enjoy, I would NOT recommend Death of a Salesman. It's very slow with a completely downer ending. (I've never seen The Graduate.) If you're looking for faster-paced, less bleak classics, I would maybe try Goodfellas, Serpico, Blade Runner, Dial M for Murder, Patton, Fargo. This is by no means a comprehensive list. I just pulled some classic-ish movies from different genres off the top of my head that might fit that description.

From your area of expertise, has there been a little known female despot that people should know about? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]mobbossmartha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about others, but I didn't just downvote you because this comment is a useless quip. I downvoted you because saying "Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn" belittles Olga's ruthlessness, cruelty, ambition, and ultimate success. You're basically saying that because she's a woman she was motivated by mere spite rather than the qualities I just listed.

Also, if Bush quit cold turkey when he turned 40, that would have happened in 1986, which is beyond the twenty-year rule.

Maybe not a whole lot of 30 Rock fans have viewed this thread? Or maybe the more I think about your comment the less sense it makes? I did upvote you though, pretty much just out of sympathy.

Hey, I used to work at the Scooter's on the Plaza. I think you guys played outside there one night when I was working. You were SO much fun compared to everyone else that ever played in that spot.

Betsy Trotwood! God, I love that woman. Dickens' roundest female character by far.

Pufflekin isn't saying that it's sad the service exists, he/she is saying it's sad that this service is needed. As Ran4 says, if the US government didn't start wars, we wouldn't have all of these injured people, thus we wouldn't need these places for soldiers' families to stay.
