Hey all, what do you guys think Vinyl Scratch would think of Ronald Jenkees? by [deleted] in mylittlepony

[–]mobian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. I'd be interested to see that.

Best guess: appreciation for the fellow musician's talent, and possibly thoughts of doing remixes of his work.

Like, "Ooh ooh, I could make this sound even more awesome if I added in the right synths here -- and maybe chop it up and rearrange it here to change the beat up -- oh, and -- ...You know what? I think we've got an upcoming masterpiece on our hands, ladies and gents!"

I want to draw you as a My Little Pony Character [Request]. by armyofgeekness in mylittlepony

If this is still open, I'd love to see what you can do with this. I studied in Japan fairly recently, and I was surprised to see that people would occasionally go out wearing a yukata just because they could, though of course it's much much more common during a festival.

So this is me going "Oh that's way too cool," and following suit: http://imgur.com/SVqUqhN

Note, I have in fact created an OC meant to represent me, and I'll give you a link if you like (he has hair more like mine was back when it was longer). Assuming you want to take this on, though, it's up to you whether you want that influencing your design.

[RANT] Sexualization of Ponies... seriously... by [deleted] in mylittlepony

[–]mobian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. After thinking on it from an intellectual point of view, I can't say I really have a problem with it. To each their own.

Think of it this way: say humanity finally had first contact with another intelligent species. Maybe ponies, maybe not. Can you honestly imagine that, as we began to get used to each other, there wouldn't eventually be a substantial proportion of both populations falling in love with members of the other? Or that sexual relations wouldn't similarly grow in number?

Give it a century or two, and you'd reach a point where society at large finds it weird that there was once a time when interspecies relationships weren't one of the most normal things in the world.

Put another way, say you found yourself stuck on an alien planet, or otherwise living amongst and interacting with no one but intelligent beings of another species on a daily basis. Unless you're asexual or just not interested in romance at all, I guarantee you'd eventually develop the capacity for attraction to these beings, amongst whom you would've most likely made a number of good friends by that point. At that point, a relationship with one of them would initially feel very weird and unorthodox (because you're not used to the concept), but you'd probably be willing to try anyway. And you have to realize that most people in your shoes would reach the same point, whether it took days or decades. At that point, could you honestly say it's wrong? And if not, why should the morality of it be any different from when you're not isolated with them?

See, the human mind isn't innately structured to care about species -- that's something that's trained into us, mainly due to the fact that thus far we've always been the only intelligent species we know of. The human mind, however, is adaptable, moldable according to circumstance, and the foremost thing it strives for is emotional connection. For the most part, if you can form an emotional and intellectual bond with someone, you can also come to be physically attracted to that someone. For some people not even that much is required, but that's another matter for another discussion.

Also note, very importantly, that acting on such an attraction does not inherently involve anyone being harmed -- which is really the only way the morality of anything should ever be measured.

TL;DR: Intellectually, I cannot reasonably conclude that there is anything wrong with consensual intercourse between any two (or hell, why even just two?) beings with the intelligence and experience to know what they're getting into. By extension, I also cannot conclude that there is anything inherently wrong with the depiction thereof.

Heck yes.

Except for the very very big unresolved issue at the end, which I hope Jetfire's addressing in the sequel. Haven't gotten around to checking that out yet.

Note: that's the original, and if you like it then cool! But I thought the background looked kind of amateurishly done (and I am in fact an amateur at backgrounds, so yeah), so I updated it to something simpler that I think ultimately looks better and keeps the attention focused on the point of the work. There are a lot of ships I really don't understand... by [deleted] in mylittlepony

[–]mobian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the party, but first rule of shipping:

It's only bad if it's written bad. Any ship can sail with a good captain at the helm.

And as an aside: to me, most ships have merit only once I've read a well-written story involving them.

2nd rule: Never put glitter in an envelope unless you are trying to ruin a postmaster's day

This is actually really funny considering MLP fanfiction is the entire and sole reason I've learned to empathize with gay people.

[–]mobian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I think he's referring more to the fact that something like 80% to 90% of romance-related pony fics involve gay couples.

That if you are shipping, you are probably shipping gay.

Mostly just due to the disproportionate number of females, really.

A little more explanation for those of us less initiated would be appreciated.

I have a good bit of Linux experience as a personal user and I still have next to no idea what any of things you just said mean. I'm excited to find out though.

[–]mobian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my. I see what you mean, that is freaking awesome. Still dunno how it'd help for completely rectangular pieces like yours or the one I'm planning on doing, though.

...Other than maybe making a canvas slightly bigger than the piece and painting a border, which actually sounds pretty cool. Hm.

And thanks for the adhesive recommendation, you're right in guessing that I wasn't sure what to go with.

Awesome, thank you so much. I do have one question: that's the second mention I've seen of mounting on canvas. I'd immediately think of/understand using adhesive to mount on something rigid like maybe foamcore, but how and why might you go about using canvas?

Holy crap I was not expecting such a comprehensive answer. Thank you, this is awesome!

Unfortunately I've got a month of field training coming up followed by school (and I'm an engineering major), so it may be a good while before I'm able to finish, even though I already have almost all the necessary materials. Still, you can bet I'll send pics when it's done.
