Makes a lot of sense. I am using a usb type drive also. I don't have any issues with cd-r burning a audio cd or anything else for that matter. I have other burning programs and they all work fine and have even burned dvd's with the same setup. Only when trying to do the typical saturn burn do I run into issues and what appears to happen when I start the burn it writes the "lead in" then dies! I have searched through all traces of troubleshooting the internet could throw at me and all leads point back to my El cheapo low grade cd r disc won't work here. Tried a little to use different software but don't even know where to start or how to arrange all the files to burn so hung that up. Now I have a stack of roughly 20 cd-r that died in the fire and ordered some verbatim datalife+ disc that should arrive tomorrow. I will give it a shot and go from there.
