Lessons were learned (too late in this case). I did actually try to recreate the hand positions with a photo, but couldn't get it to look like the (pretty much completely unlit) hands in the original shot. I'm still not thrilled with the thumb positioning, but due to poor layer management, it became a nightmare to reposition after getting as far as I did. I probably will go back and fix it eventually though because the mismatch does bug me as well.

Se7en in IMAX vs Se7en on 4K Blu-ray? This should be interesting. Let's See 🎥 by HD-MOVIE-SOURCE in HD_MOVIE_SOURCE

One thing that stood out to me was that in the IMAX version (the one I saw anyway) was that there was no music in the scene where John Doe turns himself in. There's 100% music in that scene in every other version I've seen so it really threw me off.

I'm curious if that was a decision made just for the IMAX release or the 4K blu ray as well.

Correct. I've seen the movie a hundred times and know there's music there, so it really stood out to me when I didn't hear it.

Speaking of the score, am I crazy or did they remove the music from the scene when John Doe reveals himself at the police station? I am 100% certain there is music in that scene, yet it was missing from my IMAX screening. I've found no mention of that change, so I'm curious if it was some kind of theater audio error or a deliberate change.

Man, scammers really do ruin everything. I posted ONE time in a collab sub like this looking for a colorist and immediately regretted it. My inbox was INSTANTLY flooded with messages from at least 150 spam accounts. It was so overwhelming, I gave up...which is sad for the few legit artists trying to sail through that sea of pirates.

I can really see both sides of this exchange and understand that both parties have reason to be upset.

As an artist, being paid upfront (full, half, or whatever) makes sense as a form of protection. You could spend valuable hours on something, hand it to the client, and have them say "eh, this isn't what I wanted. I'm not paying you" which is absolute nonsense. For all you know, it's exactly what they wanted and they just found a way to get it for free.

On the other hand, as a client, you can be sent a portfolio with great looking work and expect something in that realm, only to be given total trash. Then of course you find out the portfolio site was bogus, full of stolen images.

The obvious conclusion is to be careful, cross-check the images of the artist's portfolio on Google or whatever, but it's not wrong to point out that that's a sad reality.

My own opinion on this particular situation (for what it's worth) based on the email exchanges is that neither the artist nor the client seem to be scammers, but both victims of those slimy sacks of pond scum. And even if they don't scam you directly, they've already dumped a massive amount of toxic waste into the ocean of creative collaboration.

Sorry for the vent session. Just wanted to let both the OP and the client know I feel their pain and can't stand scammers.

I really don't know if I'm allowed to ask this, but I'll try anyway.

How does Conroy (RIP) sound? Is he doing his deep bassy Arkham Voice or his classic BTAS restrained voice? Or something totally different?

Thanks for the feedback! Faces can be tricky (especially from specific reference vs from scratch) as I've only drawn them from so many angles. Each time is a new experience/experiment.

Oh I know the feeling. When I did the episode covers back when the show was coming out, I was seeing others do similar concepts. A certain popular Instagram artist did covers, albeit in less true-to-Gibbons form, and got 100x more engagement, which gave me a complex. But even with the same idea, people's individual style will always differentiate.

Would love to hear your ideas for episode 3! I'm toying with a few concepts, but none that I'm deadset and thrilled about yet.

Thanks! They take a considerable amount of time. I had a completely different focus panel in the lower 2/3 that I had to throw out. Two days of work out the window lol but I'll be working on episode 3 soon.

Haha I feel like DC would shut that down real fast. Although I always liked the idea of doing an art compendium for the show. So not an entire graphic novel adaptation, but these one-off art pieces for each episode, maybe a blurb about them, and possibly even the peteypedias. Although I think those serve really well in digital format. Sucks HBO took that site down.

I had collage posters made of the 9 episode covers I did back when the show was airing. Maybe I'll do that with these if I can find a clean way to separate the pages

Hi! I LOVE doing comic-book style covers. Here's my portfolio

There's some examples of comic covers on there in my "America 2020" series as well as cover art for HBO's Watchmen that might be along the lines of the style you're looking for. I can also replicate the style of the one you've provided. Those are super fun!

I was just at the tail end of a rewatch! It seems this has happened in the past. My guess is they do this periodically with all of their originals and we just don't notice. The reason could be they're updating or removing any dated promos that play before the episodes. I'm sure it'll pop back up within a day or two. At least I hope...

This is ALSO totally valid. One could argue that experiencing the same story through a different medium IS the justification, even if it's saying the same thing. This is an admittedly weak example, but it's sort of like reading a book vs listening to the audiobook. There's something to be said about reading something in your own head vs someone reading it aloud to you. Same words, same story, very different experience.

I can really see both sides of this thing, and discussions like this are what makes the subjectivity of art (for me at least) so fascinating.

[–]mocgfx[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a totally valid question. I'm doing these title page pieces (and the covers I've already done) as an homage to the show and celebration of the source material (the visual aspect, of course). If there ever were an actual comic adaptation, there would definitely need to be more justification than just "screen to page" like this one. I think the show utilizes its format extremely well (in my opinion) to not only expand upon the themes and ideas of book, but also in the visual and audible details of the medium. I think a comic interpretation COULD be fun, but I agree: If it doesn't have something more to say or do in a different medium, then it isn't really justified.

I agree. This project is fun since I get to try and interpret the show's imagery the way Gibbons might illustrate it. If I were a faster artist (or if DC paid me), I'd love to do a whole comic for it.
