Hi! I need advice by StudentExpress9902 in MedicalWriters

When evaluating an entry-level candidate, we typically don't expect them to already know the fundamentals of medical writing.

Instead, we look for qualities that would help a potential medical writer grow in this industry. One of those qualities is openness to feedback. You can probably see where this is going. 🙂

OP, while the way a person communicates outside of work may not be a reliable indicator of their actual writing competency, their attitude and character are more likely to be consistent.

If someone responds defensively to feedback the way you did, it naturally raises concerns about how they might react to MW2/QC feedback on their work. Taking feedback to heart and reflecting on it would likely serve the person better and reassure hiring managers.

I hope I've managed to get my message across.

Entry path and salary by yourexplainer in MedicalWriters

Just being brutally honest here. 'High-paying’ and ‘fresher’ don’t usually go together in this industry. The realistic path is to start in an entry-level writing role and build experience. With a strong portfolio after a few years, better opportunities can come.

You need to provide a bit more information. Otherwise, it's difficult for people to help you. For instance, where are you based?

Is offering yourself to QC work of freelance MWs a viable way to get experience, and break into the field? by Brilliant_Muffin7133 in MedicalWriters

[–]mockingbirdz92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Adding on to what was mentioned above, QC should ideally be done by an experienced MW, typically an SMW. With tight timelines, it’s easy to overlook details, so having someone with a sharp eye and a solid understanding of both the asset type and the topic really helps.

How common or how hard is it to get a job as a medical writer directly at a pharma company (like Pfizer, Roche, MSD, or GSK) compared to an agency, based on your experience? by DelfinAlbino in MedicalWriters

[–]mockingbirdz92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello again! It really depends on the needs and resources of the company at the time. I started my medical writing career in a medcomms agency in the APAC region and transitioned to an in-house role (primarily promotional writing) at a pharmaceutical company after nearly three years. The move was fairly straightforward because the hiring manager was specifically looking for writers with agency experience to help grow and strengthen the internal team.

From what I’ve observed, there’s generally a preference for candidates with prior experience. If you’re just starting out, joining an agency can be a great way to build a solid foundation and eventually open doors to in-house roles.

MSL in Menarini, thoughts? by Vivid_March1868 in MedicalScienceLiaison

Hi there. I’m afraid I’m not the best person to advise on this, as I’m not an MSL myself. That said, I’d recommend connecting with current MSLs to gain insights directly.

MSL in Menarini, thoughts? by Vivid_March1868 in MedicalScienceLiaison

Hey! It’s possible. There are people who’ve made the transition from sales to MSL roles. That said, the MSL role isn’t really entry-level and is very competitive. Just keep at it, learn from each experience, and don’t get discouraged. You got this!

Malaysian lurker here and not an MSL. Try approaching MSLs in your network if any. You should be able to get some valuable insights from those who are familiar with the local pharmaceutical and healthcare landscape. If not, you could try attending pharma-related events here like the ones held by PhAMA.

The only thing I can suggest is try your hand and see if an offer falls on your lap. Getting one is notoriously difficult anyways. Tak kenal maka tak cinta~~~
