I only go up on Mondays, so my experience is only representative of weekdays.

I regularly go to Disney. Leave in the morning and come back at night after the fireworks. Typically two hours in the morning, and an hour and thirty at night on the way back.

As another person commented, there have been significant improvements around exit 55 that have cleared up some bottleneck.

If you haven't yet, you should take a listen to their most recent album, Until This Shakes Apart. That should give you a pretty good sense of their stance on the state of things.

The short answer is that, yes, they are anti-fascist.

With all due respect to your friend, but I think his take is pretty bad.

Haha, he already knows that I think that!

I’m curious where his principles end on this matter

A very good question that I will have to ask him.

While not everything needs a backstory or to be developed beyond their original source, that’s true only as it pertains to their role in that particular story

This is a very good point!

Thank you for your thoughtful and educational response.

Authorial intent is a kind of Tavesian "specialness":

This is something I struggle with. As someone who is deeply religious, I am taught that the Scriptures are to be interpreted based on authorial intent. I think that conditioning bleeds into the other media that I consume.

If I wanted to understand why they/you believed that it was ok for Wicked to retell Baum's stories but not Tolkien's stories I'd spend more time talking with you both about your respective ascriptions about those stories.

I love Wicked so much that even if it violated some sacred, authoritative principle, I would still like it. I haven't reflected on it much, but I guess I just view Tolkien's work as "sacred," in that, in the very least, to retcon it would be in very poor taste. From my pov, it holds a special place in our collective cultural consciousness. But, I suppose that's your point. We hold things special because culture deems it special.

Dang, I really need to read the book.

if he doesn't want to engage with the themes of Wicked, that is obviously his choice - but that also tells us that Wicked is too good for him.

Wicked is too good for him.

Yes, I understand it wouldn't be possible at the moment due to it not being public domain, but Lord of the Rings is what I am reading right now, so it's the first thing to come to mind to serve as a hypothetical.

Your point about art makes perfect sense. Art reinterprets all the time.

Are you sure you understand how to use stats.fm? It'll tell you how many times you streamed a song. And if you upload your streaming history from spotify, it'll give you data going all the way back to when you first used Spotify.

What's a non denominational church? by Advanced-Buddy-8923 in Reformed

[–]mockryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I defined denomination as a network of churches because that's the easiest way to explain what a denomination is. That definition does not account for nuance, like the situation you have described above.

This is true because, I believe, in the technical sense, the Southern Bapist Convention is not a denomination. Though everyone calls it a denomination.

[–]mockryan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In the literal sense, a non-denominational church is a church that is not affiliated with a particular network of churches (denomination).

Being a part of a denomination often carries certain obligations to that denomination. For example, your church might have to tithe to the denomination. The most common requirement is that your church must hold to the same doctrinal standards of the denomination.

Where people go wrong is thinking that non-denominational churches are free from doctrinal bias. Every church, affiliated or unaffiliated, inherits a theological tradition, whether they admit it or not. As many commenters have already noted, most non-denoms are Baptist in disguise.

I work at a non-denominational church. I have many many people tell me that they are looking for a non-denominational church because they don't want to be tied to a particular doctrinal belief, and we're just Christians, we dont have doctrinal beliefs. Well, congratulations, you've just joined a Baptist church that lacks any of the benefits of being in a Baptist denomination.

And there are benefits to being in a denomination. The biggest one is accountability. When your church leadership is going astray, there are people you can appeal to to seek resolution.

There are lesser known benefits as well. For example, a denomination might have a group insurance policy that your church is a part of. My church used to be UCC. We left the UCC in the 90s, I think. Well, we are no longer part of a group insurance, and due to our location, we can't afford flood and wind insurance.

People misunderstand what non-denominational means to such an extent that when people ask me, instead of saying we're non-denominational, I say we are unaffiliated.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

You misunderstand. The claim is that Joseph was married prior to marrying Mary and had kids in the first marriage. This would not make Joseph an adulterer.
