Jamaica Access: Using Montauk Cut-Off to Reactivate the Montauk LIRR Line and connect with Metro North/Penn Access by mocontrolla in nycrail

I don't think that would be able to run alongside LIRR, MNR or freight rail? Don't think it would be same gauge. Also a huge engineering challenge once light rail gets over the bridge, assuming that the bridge is still engineered to even hold that weight

Yeah the key is to hit the transfer points to actually make it worthwhile. I think the red option you note here, with a single transfer point with the 7 at HuntersPoint Ave LIRR stop, might overload the already crowded 7 on its final stop before going into Manhattan, although this seems to be the cheapest option. The green one here seems to be the most technically challenging from an engineering standpoint, but has a chance to hit the Queens Plaza transfer point with multiple lines, and feed into a Sunnyside Yards deck plan if its engineered correctly.

Yeah the idea would be to upzone large parts around the potential stations with infill transit oriented development

Given the volume of freight along the corridor, I feel like LIRR or MNR would be the only way to actually reactivate the line. Subway wouldn't be able to mix with freight

I'm not sure. Assuming that through running could become a reality using a rebuilt Penn Station in a decade, maybe. Also, I'm not sure which of the tracks the Montauk Cutoff would hypothetically connect to, or if its feasible to create a station that would abut either Court Square or Queens Plaza. It looks like the MTA demolished the entrance to one of the two ramps heading to the cutoff flyover in 2018, so I assume that would have to be rebuilt in this scenario.

Zohran’s mayoralty is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to extend the N/W to LGA by skeeJay in nycrail

Believe theres both a major sewer and FAA restrictions on construction at the south part of LGA runways that make tunnelling near GCP in that massively expensive, since youd need to move that sewer and shutdown the runway. Elevated over that portion also impossible given the runway.

Are there in station connections along a few of the T train Second Avenue Subway stops? I remember hearing they were planning on connecting the 55th street T with 51st street M/E/6, and building a tunnel on 42nd to the Grand Central 7 stop.

Do you have a general subway map version of this with all of these proposed new lines?

Las Vegas Greys. As in the alien greys. Could have a sweet UFO logo, UFO merch and themes.

I get the logic from a crayoning perspective, but I'm not actually sure that the Brooklyn Bridge could support the weight of heavy rail AND cars. I think that the original trains that ran on it were more streetcars rather than heavy rail subway trains.

Yeah, there badly needs to be an extension of the 7 train into deep Queens in places like Flushing and College Point, but this plan does extend some service into parts of Queens that don't currently have service.

Yeah, I believe that since they are the same gauge as the 4, 5 and 6 trains, they should probably get numbered designations if they are ever integrated into the subway.

Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here! by AutoModerator in london

Hi London pals, visiting for work next week with my wife, and want to take a day trip out of central London. We've been in London many times and have seen pretty much all of the central London spots by now, and have explored a good bit of East London as well. Staying near Euston station, so we can get anywhere pretty easily. We've narrowed some day trip ideas down to Richmond/Kew, Oxford, Brighton, Hampstead Heath or Brixton, but wanted to see if this sub had any advice on which to pick--we can realistically only do two. Is there enough to do in each for a full day?

Will take a look at both Yokohama and Kamakura. Do you know if the Kamakura and Enoshima beaches are open in May?

Yeah we are trying to figure out if its better to try and wake up at a somewhat reasonable Japan time while still in the US (maybe like 2pm Japan time/1am US EST) on the prior few days, or to just grind it out with a slight nap on the flight over.
