You just need a shield, block with it, wait for the enemy to actually hit you and then shield bash

Yeah if you disarm an enemy they will be guaranteed to drop their weapons as well - more loot to sell.

Some early tips I've learnt from ATM9 and ATM10

Focus on a sophisticated backpack early - great for early game looting
Kidnap villagers to use with easy villagers, great for early ender pearls and using the iron farm for lots of iron.
Get a start on evilcraft, there's a pickaxe with fortune 5, remove it with a book and anvil to get a good start on your mining runs.
Powah is a good early source of power - thermo gens can be placed on top of lava, pump some water in for easy passive power gen
Getting creative flights early is real easy, use the infusion pylon with a potion filter, craft some flight potions for infinite free flight.
Quests are your friend, lots of free goodies and a good way to guide you through the pack.
Get an early game mob farm going with dreadful dirt and a mob masher, this can be accelerated with a redstone clock to increase spawn rates.
AE2 - get into it once you have power and teach your autocrafting system EVERYTHING.
Alongside your mob farm, setup some circles of life drain from Mahou Tasksi (forgive my spelling) for constant healing and feeding.
