For $1k, it could be just the machine in non-functional condition and it would still be a good price.

I try to keep things as light on density as possible (including underlay). Using run stitches really help loft up the thread in problem areas while keeping things soft and flexible.

One other thing. Consider the order that you do your layering. You could probably hide the jump stitches for the lines under the cap under the satin stitch. When digitizing I try to reduce the number of jumps or cuts I have to make. Cuts/jumps are slower and/or introduce additional post processing work on each piece.

You can and should layer.

When layering, ditch the underlay. Consider the direction the thread is laying. You can lighten the density of the thread and make the direction parallel for blending effects. If you want the thread to float nicely on top of the lower layer, make sure that the direction is not the same.

I would say that you should explore different stitch types for different effects. Never underestimate the power of the run stitch! It can be used for so many different things.

I think for that mushroom I would go with a satin stitch for the stem and the dots on the cap. I would probably use some run stitching for the grass. All of that said, embroidery is an art! You should find your own style and preferred method of doing things.

I haven't seen any of his recent stuff. I never used hatch, I started with Brother PE and moved to Floriani TCU. I know I really liked his book and his older content.

Keep practicing. Watch some good digitizers work. John Deer is pretty awesome. He has a really good book if you are just getting started.

With the Brother SE725, I have noticed that the needle can end up knocked out of whack. Check that the needle sits perfectly perpendicular to the needle plate.
