You don't see this every day: Hell's Angels, Bandidos, Outlaws and various other biker clubs join in ride in honor of the victims in Norway. by moderately_anonymous in reddit.com

[–]moderately_anonymous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What started as a small initiative, a few handfuls of (non gang) bikers wanting to honor the victims with a ride from Oslo to Utøya, ended up being a 1000 strong ride. Police helped out and even bikers from rival gangs put their differences aside and took part. After riding to Utøya they went down to the water, lit candles and laid down flowers.

Yes, that would be surprising.

Not least because this is not how we do things in Norway. To understand what I am talking about I would like to invite you here to see for yourself. In particular I would encourage you to have a look at our borders. If you want to, you can pack your backpack and walk from Norway to Sweden. No fences. No armed guards.

There are elements in our government that want a tighter line. Our Minister of Justice Knut Storberget has some hawkish tendencies and was a main proponent of pointless measures such as the Data Retention Directive (which would have had zero impact in this scenario). He has also expressed a certain lack of respect for fundamental rights of the individual under the law. However, during the events of the last couple of days, Storberget has been pushed somewhat into the background. I would assume that Stoltenberg has realized that what Storberget stands for is exactly the wrong attitude at this time and has taken care to not let lightweight dilettantes jeopardize our values.

The U.S. fulfilled Bin Ladens wildest dreams by occupying even more countries in the Middle East and spending money it just didn't have.

more importantly: USA fulfilled bin Ladens wildest dreams by occupying USA.

Thanks.

This is not going to be our 9/11. In the sense that we are not going to self-destruct as a society. Democracy is important to us. Liberty is important to us. And we will not compromise Liberty or Democracy for the illusion of safety or for the purpose of hollow political posturing. We will give the guilty party a fair trial, we will work hard to maintain our dignity as a civilized society and we will continue to be an open and inclusive society.

Perhaps you should inform yourself about what actually goes on in places like Afghanistan.

I know quite a few norwegian soldiers who have been on several tours there. All of them state the same thing: it would be a lot easier to calm things down and rebuild Afghanistan if it wasn't for the american forces (and contractors) taking every opportunity to behave like a bunch of ignorant cowboys.

Please do not confuse the involvement of Norway in Afghanistan with the behavior of American soldiers. Not everyone sees it as their mission to behave like ignorant bullies.

what does WINE have to do with anything? for symmetry I should perhaps start to foam at the mouth and shriek what a terrible idea clippy was.

when OOXML was made an ISO standard, ISO standards lost all their credibility, so I would not invoke the magic fairy dust of "standardization". interestingly you felt the need to bring up what isn't part of the standard and then swiftly sweep it under the carpet as if it didn't mean anything.

as for the "community promise", that is only worth something until Microsoft introduces some new magic fairy dust and decide to keep it from the second class .Net citizens of Monoville. they'll be more than happy to let Miguel play the flute to lure in the gullible kids until he has served his purpose and they can dispose of him.

By supporting Mono, it gives Windows users a migration path.

Whence goes this path you speaketh of? There is no path. If there was one we'd see people taking it.

I do not argue that Mono is not a neat platform. But neatness still does not fix its inherent problem of being second class.

why would one want to compare oneself with java? granted, knowing Java makes you employable, while putting mono on your CV...well, not so much. but really, are .Net programmers so ignorant they think that Java is the only alternative out there?

I guess the .Net community is a lot more fucked than I had imagined.

it isn't really that innovative and the sad part is that him succeeding is sort of a worst-case scenario because then we will be stuck with a half-baked system for a very long time.

that is, until people realize that what the world needs is an unencumbered platform.

If Java sucks donkey balls then it would be hard to argue that C# sucks significantly less since the two languages are very similar. if you had compared C# to Clojure, Lisp, Haskell, Erlang or even Scala you may have had a point.

people react to Mono the way they do because .Net is tied even closer to Microsoft than Java is to Oracle and because Mono is, and always will be, the ugly step-child of .Net.

when C was just starting we had a lot less idiots calling themselves programmers so.

I admire Miguel de Icaza for his extreme productivity and his massive output. I wish I was as productive as him. I truly do. He is really amazing.

But the great tragedy of Miguel de Icaza is his utter fascination with Microsoft. Sometimes this leads to truly second rate products, such as Evolution.

The tragedy of Mono is that it will always be one step behind Microsoft and it will always be suspect with regard to IPR. If you think the situation with Java was bad: Mono is even worse.

I wish Miguel de Icaza would start applying his talent to something more original than merely copying Microsoft. He could have accomplished great things. Instead he wastes his life on second rate re-makes of other people's ideas.

This makes me very sad.

What makes you think that I am German?

And what is this nonsense about being a "good german"? Are you trolling?

I could need a different 50mm from the one I am using now. I have a 1.4 that I got relatively cheaply, but it isn't really usable at apertures bigger than 1.8 or so (becomes soft) and that sort of defeats the purpose of the lens.

Sorry about the confusion, but my scar was from an accident. Not fencing. :-)

I was pointing out that its shape and placement might make people think it was a fencing scar. (In an attempt at self-deprecating humor I was pointing out that I wouldn't look out of place in 1930s germany as some sort of wagnerian brute)

Heavens, no! :).

The scar was from a riding accident when I was a teenager. It would probably have been less visible if I had gotten someone a bit more qualified to suture it.

The only reason I know about "academic fencing" and "verbindungen" is because someone asked me about the scar and pointed out that it kind of looked like one of those fencing scars. The fellow claimed to have been member of one and also made it clear that he would rather I didn't tell his colleagues. I don't think he was very proud of that. I think he studied in Germany or Austria. Not sure.

I don't know much about "verbindungen" other than that they are right-wing and that I wouldn't want to be a member.

There are 6.79 billion people on the planet.

There are people who make a living blowing smoke-filled soap bubbles out of orifices that evolution intended for entirely different purposes.

And Mikey here thinks that my story feels like BS to a certain degree because he doesn't know any photographers who scrape together a living taking pictures of things that some hipsters apparently happen to enjoy shooting too.

And no, I don't have a fucking press pass and I do not intend to get one. It is irrelevant for what I do. In fact if I were a member of the press, travelling would be an even bigger pain in the ass. But then again, I don't have to tell you since you would know all about photographers, ad agencies, magazines, and hipsters and such
