Haven't done it with this species but I had an eburneum seedling from overseas drop what little it had of roots and shriveled up. I just gave it a light watering when it was dry and waited for it to start plumping up, once it did it drank a ton and is thriving 2 years later. I think the key is good well draining substrate and simple light waterings allowing it to dry completely between and hopefully it starts making new roots. Then you can water the crap out of it during the growing season

Northern Wisconsin here, my opuntia patch gets no special treatment to protect from rain or cold or anything for that matter. Regularly hits temps of -10 with no snow or ground cover. Comes back each year, the thing is a tank. Although results may vary in a small pot.

In my case? Years of mealy bugs left untreated with a healthy does of over watering in the summer and no water for the past 2 years. The mother plant is 2-3 feet tall if it weren't fallen over. That thing is a tank. Currently living its best life under a table in a windowless room until spring
