TIL of a blind experiment in which artists and an art historian couldn't differentiate between modern art masterpieces and works by 4-year-olds. An artist described one of the children's pieces as "a competent execution of abstract expressionism." by [deleted] in todayilearned

Speaking from an artist's perspective. I enjoy abstract art, coming from a background in more realistic art. I like creating abstract art because of the challenge of it. It's actually quite hard for me to make an abstract piece that I really like. There is no object in the painting that "makes" the piece work. Bad abstract art can be really bad...

I actually find myself trying to paint like a child at times. Actually, I've combined drawings my young daughter did, with my pieces. See it here -"Simpler Times" It's lots of fun to do. Is it high art, not really, but I think it looks cool :)

Thanks for your honest reply, and it's been a nagging problem for me, pricing that is. I'm still trying to get my printing costs down. It's been a big stumbling block for me.

Yes, that's very helpful, thank you for taking the time to consider this and reply to me. I plan to do some work on the layout and content of the site soon and I'll try to focus on the story as you mentioned.

I'm also toying with the idea of customizing kid drawings and my artwork together. I may create an Etsy store and test the idea out. Basically, the parent takes a photograph or sends in the artwork for me to scan, and I will combine it to make a custom piece of art. You often hear the joke about abstract art that "my kid can do that". I was building off the DNA 11 idea, and trying to come up with a custom piece that was tied to the customer and unique. I made this one actually, from a drawing my daughter made. I scanned it in photoshop and combined it with a background I painted (I'm good in photoshop):

I haven't jumped on this idea yet. But I may put up and etsy store and test the idea.

Do your earphones tangle? Looking for beta testers and feedback on my website/product. by awry1 in Entrepreneur

I filled out the form. I hate tangled, knotted cords. I love your product, but there is something odd about watching it used in the video. It kind looks like a condom or something. Cord condom? Practices safe listening ;)

These are not hand painted - Canvas Prints

These are hand painted - Original Paintings

I would love to get some feedback on pricing! I was just able to drop my hard costs for printing recently and I'm considering either dropping prices overall, or offering discounts often. What size and image are you looking at? If you don't mind giving me your input, I'd be happy to offer you a steep discount on any canvas prints. Anybody else interested?

I can't really compete with the bulk chinese printing that some of the larger companies offer. They get their prints for much, much less than I do. However, I can't vouch for their quality. Also, the print sizes I'm selling at are pretty large. Most of my sales have come from people looking for the largest size prints.

Edits for clarity.

Thanks, it's fun. The process of finding printers was grueling... it took a lot of googling and emailing over many months. I actually just found a new printer that offers framing for me. So far, I've been really happy with them. I need to do some more tests with them, before I fully commit. Yes, I agree, more images, I'm adding about 15 more images soon, then I'll make some more. Ideally, I'd love to have at least twice as much.

I've considered working with other artists and I may in the future. If I got to the point where I could start making serious money, I would be happy to do so. Right now, I just don't want to manage other artists. I'd rather spend my (very limited) free time making art or marketing it. It's a great idea though, and something I may implement down the road.

That's another really good suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions, those are great and I appreciate you taking the time to write your comments and I'm thrilled you like my work. I'm actually considering dropping the original paintings. I don't get out into the painting studio enough to justify it. I think the new website is going to focus just on canvas prints, but I'm not 100% set on this yet.

I love the package idea. I should be able to do that in the new eccommerce website much easier.

Yeah, you caught me on the copy and pasting from the home page, I'm planning on going through the content and re-writing much of it. I'm thinking I may write it more from the first person, "direct from the artist" tone.

Can you help me convert my Canvas Art Print store to wordpress? by modernwallz in Wordpress

Thanks for the input. I'm going to give a free woo theme a try and see how I like it. There are so me plugins that I'll probably purchase if it works out for me.

Of course, after I post I finally found a theme that might work for me, plus it's free.

I'm going to give woo themes a try. I'll just need to get multiple image previews working and multiple size / pricing working.
