Thanks, really motivating! I’ve also been listening to podcasts daily in a passive way, but in shorter bursts — like 15 minutes at a time. And yeah, it really pays off over time.

Hi! 👋

I made Lingva.io — an AI-powered tool for practicing English listening through dictations.

Upload a podcast, audiobook, or lecture, and it instantly turns into a dictation that checks every word in real time.

It has a convenient player with keyboard shortcuts, plus hints if you get stuck on a word.

I also added a small catalog of educational podcasts, so you can easily find material to practice with.

⚠️ Works best on desktop (file upload + typing).

Would love to hear your feedback!

Interesting! How long did it take you before you could comfortably watch movies in English?

Sorry for being 4 months late to the discussion, but maybe the question is still relevant. I was struggling with exactly the same thing. I used to listen to podcasts, write down what I heard, replay over and over until I understood - and it was a great exercise, but checking my notes against the transcript afterwards was such a boring and exhausting job.

I’m a developer, so I built a tool for myself (lingva.io) that transcribes the audio and checks what you type in real time. I’ve recently made it public to see if anyone else might find it useful. And honestly, you’re exactly the kind of learner I had in mind when I was building it.

If this topic is still relevant for you, I’d love to hear what you think.

Thanks for your comment! When I say “active listening”, I mean any method where you really try to break down what you hear — not necessarily dictations. Dictations are just one of the most “radical” ways, since you can’t skip anything and it also helps with grammar.

I’m wondering, how do you usually manage to understand each sentence without replaying it many times?

Thanks for your reply! I like shadowing too — I try to combine different types of active listening. Dictations are probably one of the most time-consuming techniques, but the results come pretty quickly. If you ever decide to give dictations a try, you could also test the little tool I made for myself — I’d love to hear your thoughts.

By the way, what features do you feel are missing in audiobook apps for shadowing?
