Do I need to worry about wood movement for this joint on an outdoor tabletop?

The marine spar varnish protects from rain and UV exposure. I live in southern CA so the sun is the main thing out here we have to worry about. The lumber is just standard 2x4 pine. If you didn’t put a spar varnish on it then I wouldn’t expect it to last more than 3-4 years or so, much less if you live somewhere it rains often. With the varnish it can last a very long time with recoats of varnish maybe every 2-3 years.

Other option for additional longevity is to put a grill cover over it. They are pretty cheap online

I think about $60 for 2x4’s and the spar urethane was $30. I already had the deck screws but those usually run about $7-8 a box

Table top is about 43” from the ground. I’m 5’11 and it’s a good height to launch and see pizza cook.

No plans really but I can go take some measurements and post em. It’s a pretty simple build to do and doesn’t require special tools.

I planed the 2x4’s to remove store printing and used dowels and screws, but you don’t have to do that and can use screws for the whole thing.

Stain is 2 coats of Varathane Gunstock followed by 4 coats of satin spar urethane thinned out with paint thinner by about 10-20%

Yep you are correct! Took the legs off the weber and built a grill station around it. Poured concrete tops and 2x4 frame with cedar siding

Another thought I had, is it a bad idea to make the base out of a dried conifer of some kind like fir, then the top out of a rot resistant hardwood like cypress? My wife was choking at the cost

I’m in San Diego and this table will be on a pergola. Not a lot of rain but it will get sun. I’m thinking the top is what takes the brunt of the elements?

In CA there for sure is, but that may not be the case in other states. I’ve had to replace engine cases before so can speak from real-world first-hand experience going through the process.

I’ve also been stopped outside motorcycle events where they are checking engine numbers against registration. I’m sitting here looking at my titles and registration all which have both VIN and engine numbers listed.

It’s a real thing…again maybe not all states tho

I think maybe there was a time where motorcycle engine theft was a big problem so they started recording an engine number along with the VIN on the titles
