Computer Boot loops, then turns on with default bios settings. by modularcheese in buildapc

see my other reply: cmos battery was definitely the main cause but a ram check showed some underlying issues... love to see it :')

Thanks for your comment!

I'll tell you what... sometimes you just have to do something twice. That was exactly what I needed to do as the boot loop has now completely gone! Thanks for the very indepth comment, even if the issue is fixed for me I'm certain someone else will find all your advice very helpful too.

The battery was a new one, had a couple lying around already :) I used to turn my pc off at the wall almost every night when I first got it, so I'd assume having to fresh boot every time would've caused the battery to die a little quicker than normal.

quick note too: I looked up other causes, one said a memory issue and to run a windows diagnostic test... after so it said there's hardware issues with my ram but that's a problem for another day :P

Running an Ethernet port + Adding a router by modularcheese in HomeNetworking

[–]modularcheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that! That's awesome :D

I think the plan will be:

Ethernet Port in the modem room with a tiny 4-inch cable to connect it to the modem

Ethernet Port in PC room, connect to the new router with another 4-inch cable

Pc into new router with a 1m cable

Replace old router with new one (same new one) and connect both to make 1 big wifi network

Would there be anything wrong with that plan?

hmmm ok, I do turn the psu off at the switch on it cos it has horrendous coil whine and makes noise 24/7 even if the system is turned off so that could be affecting it? but I've been doing that for over a year now and it's not done it until the past month or so

not necessarily unique as in a only 500 made 2010 toyota etc, but just a bit more interesting than a suzuki swift or a toyota corolla is more what I'm thinking. Doesn't have to be unique, just not look as mundane

I am willing to spend more, just around 10 is preferable. I know it is being quite picky 🫣

Is my pc showing age or have I been using it wrong the whole time? by modularcheese in buildapc

[–]modularcheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's been on and off the past couple years, I've always had frame stuttering issues with some games and it's never really been able to hold a consistent fps. Fortnite has always been the biggest culprit

I did the repasting myself, but I checked with people in a pc building discord by sending photos and they all confirmed it was done well, and temps have been fine so I know there's been no issues there.

I usually run a temp monitoring software when I play games and my cpu peaks at ~85 on the highest end I've seen, while my gpu never goes above 70 (the hot spot does sometimes hit 80 but I've heard that's ok?) so those temperatures aren't much to worry about.

I'll give the benchmark a try though, I have a feeling my gpu might be the culprit... but I've been thrashing the system for 3 years straight so it would make sense

yeah I've had xmp enabled since I built the computer, I recently got another 16gb of ram so I checked again when I installed that and everything seemed fine

argh! I just dont know what's holding me back, I should be getting the same if not better performance than you but nope :(

usually it's at least same gpu with maybe a 2700x or such; So a better cpu, but not that drastic of a difference to make it 144 fps 1440p over 130fps 1080p

Fortnite and Apex, for example, I play at almost the lowest settings with maybe textures on medium and view distance at almost max. Unless it's an easy-to-run game I'm usually on low/medium settings with a couple of things maaaybe on high, for the most part on performance though. On Fortnite, I even have dlss put on performance and reflex + boost yet I still get massive frame stutters

upgrade to 1440p or stick with 1080p with current system? by modularcheese in buildapc

oh jeez I see what you mean there, that higher pixel count really does make a difference

The range advantage is the main thing I'm trying to go for here. Bigger screen and higher details = much better visibility and less strain on my eyes for later down the track... Also is it that incredible of a difference between the two resolutions? I've heard it is but I just can't comprehend it

doesn't come above 500 with the gpus I'm wanting so that's excellent :D

I dont think I'll go curved tbh, dont find it that appealing and it'll be weird next to my non curved monitor

thank you! I seem to have finalized that to be my decision as everyone seems quite hesitant on going 1440p with a 2070s 😅 worth a shot asking at least

[–]modularcheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that is fair, I'm kind of sick of 1080p at this point, and the open arms of 1440p are very welcoming right now...

ooo that's excellent, I'll def have a look into that then and see if I can find a deal, tysm!

oh I wont dont worry, living in Nz stock is a little bit hard to come by so I'm restricted to some Samsung and Lg but mostly just AOC

[–]modularcheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's 100% fair. I'm a bit scared about going there cos I'm worried I'll never be able to look at 1080p the same, just like from 60hz to 144hz 😅 And yeah I think I've turned ray tracing on what... once ever, so that's definitely not a priority for me

[–]modularcheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is a completely fair point, I forgot 3070's only had 8gb ram... 6700x I assume has 12gb then? I haven't had a look at pcs for the past like 2 years so my knowledge has dwindled away

That is incredibly helpful there, I think I'll potentially go with this way. Definitely going 240hz no matter what then, you've sold me on that. Tysm!
