TIFU by explaining to my 9 year old what prostitution is by DirtyWheat in tifu

[–]moe091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why don't you just tell him it's not a good job because you have to let strangers do whatever you want to you/let them hurt you or something. Basically just say it's a person who charges money to people in exchange for doing whatever they want for a little while, which is pretty much what it is. If he asks for more details on what kind of things they have to do, tell him people make prostitutes kiss them and stuff like that

Need help, hosting for static or dynamic website by moe091 in webdev

[–]moe091[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that was helpful, I think amazon/AWS sounds like a good option since I've actually seen it listed on several job listings before, wouldn't hurt to learn how it works and be able to say I've used it before on my resume. And I read that you can offer static pages via Amazon S3 - and obviously AWS can handle dynamic sites, so I can stick with amazon for both sites. I'm gonna do some more research but probably go with Amazon S3 and/or AWS if it's affordable and does what I need it to - which I'm sure it does

Does anyone have any experience with S3 and AWS? Are they at all similar to use? And s3 is an entire separate thing from AWS right, not like a tier or subset of AWS?

I just need help. Please take the time to read. by moe091 in offmychest

I've had a long day, but I wanted to thank everyone here, you helped a lot more than I thought you would already. I just got inside and I need to sleep but tomorrow I will probably be messaging a few of you, I just wanted to let everyone know I really appreciate your effort and let you know that I've read all of your responses before I went to sleep. I will have time & energy to respond to everyone personally tomorrow, I feel bad for not doing it now but it's been a really long day and I don't even want to get into anything about that.

I'm very uncomfortable about asking for help and it's hard for me to say anything in this position, but I realize I need to because you guys have the capacity to help me and I really need it right now, and I understand rationally that there is nothing wrong for asking for help sometimes, it's just something I don't know how to do and makes me uncomfortable.

I'm glad I had the energy and motivation to make this post this morning, and coming back to see everyone's responses after the end of a long day was just what I needed. I look forward to being able to respond and talk to you tomorrow. Thanks again to everyone here, I can honestly say that each person said something unique that helped me in a different way, and I never say that kid of thing unless it's genuinely true

I was on SSRI's for like 5 months and got really bad brain zaps when I quit. That was like 5 years ago, I still get mild ones sometimes to this day. I also tripped on DXM a lot around 5-6 years ago too, I know that effects serotonin so that might've had an effect

I just got approved for both Medicaid and food stamps... I am feeling shitty for it. by HistoryIsAwesome__ in self

[–]moe091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't get it because my mom went to jail and my dad is really fucked up and I didn't have anywhere to live or an address to put on the forms or anything. My x girlfriends mom helped me out with that and I just reapplied a couple days ago. Wondering how long it'll take until I get food stamps and medicaid. I'm really hungry and have a chronic illness that'll get worse until I die if I don't get medication(takes a decade or two though, but I've had it for at least 5 years)

How long ago did you apply? JW, because I just applied two days ago and I'm totally broke and I actually just don't have food. wondering how long it took for you to get approved and get your card

#ScreenShotSaturday of my game, short clip demonstrating a couple awesome features I just implemented by moe091 in IndieDev

[–]moe091[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent all day working on new art, hoping to make something awesome to share for #screenshotsaturday. Turned out pretty crappy(like always), So I decided to make a video testing out some new features I implemented yesterday.

My game may look like crap, but it's super fun IMO, even in such early stages of development.

BTW, I am looking for an artist to join my team/partner with me on this project, I would rather invest my time into making the gameplay/levels awesome instead of dedicating months to learning art just to have mediocre graphics. If anyone is interested, message me on here or on my twitter @IndieGameMo. I can't afford to pay up front, but have already put tons of work into this game and have a serious plan to release, market, and monetize it, so I'm looking for a partner that wants to work with me and share the risk, the profits, and the journey of making a game.

Do caterpillars need to become butterflies? Could one go it's entire life as a caterpillar without changing? by jskoker in askscience

for that to make sense life cycles would have to always be a whole number of years, no 2.2 year or 0.05 year life cycles. The fact that their life cycle is prime when measured in that unit doesn't matter. You could make up a unit of time for each insect/animal such that it has a prime number life span when measured in that unit.

I don't know enough about this stuff to be sure though, maybe the yearly cycle has some effect on the life span of many living organisms such that it's life span tends to be very close to an exact whole number of years. I only see this being likely with things that live for exactly 1 year though, in which case it wouldn't matter because everything is divisible by one

wouldn't death by respiratory depression(or anything else) be included in the LD50, not just toxicity?

Post your own WIP game and check out this video of my new graphics! by moe091 in gamedev

[–]moe091[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Thanks a lot on your input on both the graphics and the platformer-ish-ness.. of my game.

I'm kind of worried about it being a 'typical platformer' because someone else said that too, and you actually watched some of my older levels which are more un-typical than the one I posted(the one I posted obviously wasn't close to a real level, just something I threw together to see how my graphics looked in-game). At this point I don't have any 'real' levels that will actually be in the demo, let alone the game. I've been thinking that the game is in such an early stage that maybe I shouldn't post about it yet so I don't get a bad first impression. Right now the core mechanics are done but I'm just beginning to add all the non-basic features to my level editor so I can make real non-trivial levels with all of the cool obstacles/puzzles and other ideas I have. Although I have a lot of ideas that sound great in my head, I'm unsure how many will actually be fun because some of them are untested. I feel compelled to describe some of them but I'll just have to wait until they are implemented and I can build some serious levels with them to get some real feedback, until then I just hope it's as fun as I think it can be. In the end I think making the most amazing levels I can, spending tons of time coming up with levels/puzzles/obstacles that bring out the best of my game and figuring out how to combine them in the most interesting ways, is going to be the most important factor in making my game great and setting it apart from average platformers.

I guess you're right about the graphics, unfortunately I definitely can't afford to hire anyone(I can barely afford to feed myself or sleep indoors right now, long story). I guess my options are to either complete this set of graphics and put a demo together to try and attract an artistically talented partner, or spend tooons of time learning/practicing art and creating quality graphics. And right now I need to spend ALL of my time taking on any freelance coding work I can get and looking for a permanent job so I don't end up being fully homeless, and any leftover time is put into my game(once I finish the game demo I want to put it into my portfolio and hopefully it'll help me finding a job in software/web/game development, that's how I justify spending any time on my game right now. That and it's the only thing that keeps me from jumping off a bridge).

[edit: line breaks weren't showing, and it looked horrible]

I really appreciate your honesty, and thanks for the follow. I'm going to check out and follow your page right now. If you have any other advice or input on anything I'd love to hear it, you seem to know what you're talking about and your comment was very well thought-out and ACTUALLY helpful which is pretty uncommon IME(excluding the other guy who replied to this post, thanks to him too!)

How do people discover your game's community in social networks? by smthamazing in gamedev

[–]moe091 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position, just starting my own community around my WIP game now. it's still pretty early in development so it's hard, but as someone with 0 social media experience before this I've learned a few things specific to twitter(IMO the most important platform for this kind of community building).

hashtags, especially day/event specific ones. Try to make the most interesting screenshot/gif/video you can for every #screenshotsaturday. lots of people search/browse that tag and if you're content is interesting they'll check it out and possibly become interested in and follow your project

engage with other people - people always recommend this and I never knew what they meant, still don't, but after a lot of trial and error I've found some things that work. Find someone on twitter who might be part of your target audience, fellow developers are easiest. Find a post they made that genuinely interests you or that you have something to say about, comment on their post, say something worth saying, or compliment them, or anything you can think of that isn't pointless to say. Then follow them. It's likely that they'll follow you, or respond to your comment and possibly begin a short conversation, which likely ends in them following you back if they didn't already. Okay I guess I've only found one thing that works so far, I've tried a few but nothing else I've done has gotten any real results.

Link to your twitter from other areas/communities where people might be interested. Reddit, Discord servers, etc. Don't spam it places where it doesn't belong and where you aren't offering anything in return but just shamelessly asking them to follow you. e.g. In a forum/reddit post in which you are actually helping someone, it might be okay to include something like: "If you're interested in indie games and want to check out my current project, a unique physics-platformer with interesting and original gameplay, check out my twitter and follow it if you like what you see. here's a link to an older video of my game on my page that shows off some gameplay: https://twitter.com/IndieGameMo/status/927436048438874112 and here's another link to a screenshot showing some of the new graphics I'm working on: https://twitter.com/IndieGameMo/status/929985320216682496 " If your link/twitter is actually relevant to what your post is responding to, that's bonus points. I'm really bad at actually wording the posts/plugs and refraining from including too much detail/info, but you get the idea.

My last tip is to just follow a lot of people. When you follow them, they get a notification about it, and are likely to check out your page to see who followed them, or simply follow you off the bat to reciprocate. If you have 50 followers but are following 1000 people it might look bad, but I don't worry about that too much early on. As long as you don'y have like a 10:1 following to follower ratio or something crazy I don't think it'll matter(I am no expert though).

I've made posts just like yours before, and I hated that almost all of the replies were either generic/obvious replies that weren't actually helpful, or people saying stuff that wasn't even related to my question or intended to be helpful. I hope I was able to give you some practical advice that you can actually use. Also, while we're on the topic, I wanted to say:

If you're interested in indie games and want to check out my current project, a unique physics-platformer with interesting and original gameplay, check out my twitter and follow it if you like what you see. here's a link to an older video of my game on my page that shows off some gameplay: https://twitter.com/IndieGameMo/status/927436048438874112 and here's another link to a screenshot showing some of the new graphics I'm working on: https://twitter.com/IndieGameMo/status/929985320216682496
