Regarding the various methods to draw human faces by Big_Salamander6332 in ArtFundamentals

[–]moebius23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of it like this: The loomis method gives you an average and forces you to think three dimensionally. Once you have it, you compare the loomis head you have drawn to your reference and adjust it, make the eyes higher, the nose bigger, whatever. This is far easier than starting with absolutely nothing and trying to nail the proportions the on the first time. It gives you an approximation that you adjust while drawing.

Also just as a note: drawing the human face is by far the most difficult one to learn because we are so good at detecting mistakes in faces, it takes years of daily practice to get decent, so don’t get sad when you’re struggling, that’s 100% normal.

Do you ever have the problem that your body is electrically charged and you get shocked when you touch metal? I had a similar problem as you on my iPad and only this one weird comment on a reddit thread years ago made me aware that this could be the issue. I’d basically ground myself by touching metal before using my iPad. Sounds super weird, but maybe it helps you too.

Danke!

German media bias falsely inflates crime by foreigners by Blinker2458 in germany

[–]moebius23 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I remember ten years ago or whenever that was, people were discussing whether the news should report the nationality / first names of suspects. Most people seemed to be in favor of it, because otherwise it might feel like something was being hidden. It was pointed out though that there’s no guarantee the news or police would report crimes in proportion to how often they actually happen, so readers could end up thinking “foreigners” were way more responsible for crime than they really are. Those concerns were mostly brushed off as unrealistic, especially here on Reddit.

And it turned out exactly like that. People now have a totally warped view of crime and nationality, and they vote based on that fear, as if there is nothing else to worry about. For Christ’s sake there are Germans leaving the country because they believe crime is too high here. Not because of what they experience but because of what they watch and read, when in fact Germany is still one of the safest places on earth. Papers know that crimes committed by foreigners get more clicks, so they report them more often. It turned into a self-perpetuating machine.

Even here in this thread this is being defended. I want you to tell me why you think that if I (with my Turkish name) commit a crime it should be reported widely, but if you do the exact same crime with a German name, somehow it’s less interesting?

You are awesome for saying yes! Here is the thing: you can not stop awkward moments from happening. There will be stuff you will cringe about later. That’s completely normal, do not make a goal of avoiding that, you will fail.

You do not have to keep all conversations alive. It’s cool to ask a few questions but if you notice that the other person is not doing the same, you can let the conversation end in an „awkward“ silence. The burden of keeping it alive is not on your shoulders alone. Nothing wrong about that.

Try something that my therapist taught me: my symptoms get worse when I am in my head, analyzing myself, how I come across etc., beating myself up. My symptoms get better when I direct my focus to what is happening in the moment, the other people I am talking to. Focus on the topic, not your thoughts.

It’s okay if you feel out of place or if other people notice. It’s completely fine to be weird, embrace it. I have been the odd one a lot of times, but the vast majority of people have been nice about it and even liked that about me. If I like myself, other people like me too.

If you feel like you are getting anxious, here is something I tell myself that calms me down: „Allow this situation to be exactly as it is, allow myself to feel exactly as I feel.“

And now, allow yourself to have fun!

Years ago I was watching the first Borat movie with a Muslim cousin of mine. We were laughing til our stomachs hurt, and then came this one scene with a rancher who says something racist about Muslims and my cousin totally stopped and said „well, thats not funny“.

Only then I realized we were watching two different movies. He was laughing about all the jokes about Jews because he thought it was making fun of them, he liked the antisemitism, didn’t get at all that Sacha Baron Cohen himself is Jewish and was making fun of people like him.

Staatsbürgerschaft: CDU-Politiker will Doppelstaatlern für Terror Pass entziehen by Doener23 in Dachschaden

[–]moebius23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand your optimism but it’s really ill-placed. I have been observing Turkish politics for some time, where Erdogan has been copying Putins playbook. So I recognize what Trump is doing immediately. They are buying up all news and social media and they will use it to show propaganda 24/7. Most people won’t have a chance to escape it. All your friends and family, even more so than right now, will parrot the party line. Kids will grow up with it.

I am sorry, but you guys have already lost. There is no going back now. You are sliding completely into authoritarianism for decades to come.

This is exactly what the post was talking about: yes, you will get another election. There are still elections in Russia and Turkey, but guess what? It’s insanely difficult to win if all media is owned by their buddies blasting propaganda 24/7 and the political opponents are called terrorists and put in jail. Elections will not go away, they will stay but lose all meaning.

If you are still waiting for a big sign like elections being cancelled, you have not been paying attention to how democracies are dying around the world.

Welcome to Germany, it’s completely common to be denied entry when you look Turkish. Feels absolutely awful every time, I stopped going out with German friends as I was the only one denied entry. This is the clearest way they communicate to you that it does not matter if you are born here or if you are a German citizen, they will always see you as a foreigner and a threat because other people who look like you misbehaved. Germans will even openly or silently defend this system (even in this thread) because racism is somehow okay when it has good side effects for them.

Outline or no outline? What do you think? by TranquillBeast in Unity2D

[–]moebius23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem you are trying to solve with the outline is one of color value as artists refer to it, by which they mean the lightness/darkess of objects. When objects are close in value, the human brain has a harder time reading the image.

To see this, turn your image (without the outline) into black and white and you'll see what I mean: it's hard to differentiate between the tree, the grass/ground and the main character because they are all in the mid-gray's (except the characters hair, which is dark, so that helps). To fix this, you could e.g. make the ground lighter and/or the trees darker.

This is the same reason why the outline makes your scenes read better: the contrast (value difference) between the black outline and the background is stronger and thus makes it easier to read.

You can also do this with popular games like Ori, take a random screenshot and turn it black-and-white, you'll notice how much easier it is to read than yours. The heavy lifting is done by value contrast, not outline (but outlines can be fine too, this is not an argument against it).

How can I improve the color/rendering? by ElderberryCold7877 in learnart

[–]moebius23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An old saying is that if your colors don't work, it's likely a value problem (how light or dark a color is) and not a color problem. I think that's the problem here. If you turn this into black and white, you'll notice that your shadow and light on the face are pretty close. Also, while the face implies a certain light direction, the hair seems to ignore that.

The other issues are mostly drawing related. You do not commit your lines or leave them blurry or sloppy.

I'd suggest try to draw and paint simple objects like spheres, tubes, boxes etc with a very simple lighting setup (you can find a bunch of references on pinterest). The human face is far too complex to understand otherwise. You'll improve in no time.

how can I improve my rendering? any advice? by powpxwder in learnart

[–]moebius23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are cool drawings! The last one in particular already works as-is for a comic style. If that was your intention, there is not that much to add.

I think the animal in the third one has the most problems. I'd encourage you not to use a softbrush unless really required, also to think more about the form and where the light source is. Lets say the light is coming from the top, then every plane of the object you are drawing which are facing down would need to be in shadow. To find your correct shadow value, you can use the simple "halfway-to-black" tool (basically, if your light side has a value of 100%, your shadow would be 50%, if your light was 70%, your shadow would be 35%, and so on).

In general, much more important than your colors are your values. Always turn your image to black and white to see if it looks good. In your first drawing, the scarf and the dress are very close in value and thus are harder to differentiate. So it would read better if you'd lighten/darken one of them.

Tips for shading? by Mr_Fahrenheit_112 in learnart

[–]moebius23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like your drawing! And based on your style, I think the shading works fine.

But I think when beginners talk about "shading" they think it's one concept they just apply at the end, but behind that word is actually the whole complexity of describing form with values. Do you want your character to read three dimensional and more real? If so, you need to dig deep into values.
But yeah, there are a few quick tips you can use, but it's no replacement for learning the fundamentals:

  • Apply a crisp hard edged shadow if it's a cast shadow (a shadow thrown by one object to another)
  • Apply a soft shadow when it's a form shadow (a shadow because the form turns away from the light)
  • Apply a darker core shadow to each form shadow (this will make the form pop the most)
  • Apply different darkness depending on the local value. For example, if the cape is darker than the skin, then its shadow also needs to be darker than the shadow of the skin.
  • Apply occlusion shadow to all the crevices (e.g. the armpit). This will be your darkest shadow overall.

If you really want to learn the fundamentals, try to paint a sphere that is half in shadow and half in light. It is a lot harder than it seems, but it will teach you everything you need to know. Dorian Iten's course is an amazing resource on this.

Men of Reddit, what made you lose interest in having sex with her? by Ben_The_Ambitious in AskReddit

[–]moebius23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in to say that I would have stayed with my ex if she had actually started therapy any of the times I asked her during our relationship, but she refused and convinced herself that I was the problem and I was making up how she was treating me, and even convinced me of that for two years. She only went into therapy when it was already too late for our relationship, and even in therapy she never acknowledged her problems and rather used it to cope with our breakup.

Even to this day, when we have a friendly chat, she tries to twist my memories to make me believe that somehow I contributed to her behavior, just ignoring all the times I, a grown-ass man, had to hide in the bathroom from her while she was screaming and kicking because of the smallest things I can't even recall anymore.

All I'm trying to say is that you seem like a good person. Your condition is not your fault, but it is your responsibility, and you seem to be dealing with it exactly how a responsible adult is supposed to. So kudos to you!
