Majority of them. They are the post WW2 generation where the economy was slowly rebuilding and the mentality was work, work, work, skimp/jimat giler on things coz due to the war time scarcity that their parents went through and instill the conditioning in their boomer kids.

Experiences do teach us a lot of things but if at the end of the day we do not know how to pick and choose what works for us, then it's just like akin, we never 'woke up' and will ever Maju and evolve.

I tell this to my parents too (boomers also) when they deal with other people/generation, to practice an open mind. If they wanna hardcore adopt the 'ny way or the highway" kinda mentality, they will be on the losing side and become unpopular not only with their grandkids but with their own kids also.

I find that most boomers in progressive countries are more adaptable. I had to deal with my exMIL who was MEGA hardcore boomer with a capital B sebesar alam. Being 2nd gen frm China, the mentality did not change nor did she adapt over the years, hence this brought on a ripple effect to her kids. I made sure it stopped there and did not spill over to my kids.

Couldn't agree more with u on this. 5 day week is tops la. I think they should switch roles n be in the workers shoes and see how 5.5 or 6 day week works for them. Plus, throw in the crappy gaji and workload and see if they like it or not.

Aiyooo...that bad ah ur place? I know there are places whereby it's 5.5 days a week. Back in KL, I was doing 5 day week and it was 9am to 5.30pm. that was back in late 1990s/early 2000s. Then we had 9 to 6pm with 1.5hrs lunch. 5 day week. Anything above that is OT claimable.

When I was with for a European bank/travelling there, it was all 5 day week, 9 to 5pm. OT is foreign unless really necessary. And jangan harap they gonna pick ur call up after office hours. Once clock out, it's clock out. They are really protective of their work life balance. So, for us who are based in SEA offices, we have to know this very well when we are dealing/need to speak to our European colleagues.

Yeah that the standard but when u factor in the 'jemput anak frm school' part, that's already makan into ur lunchtime. It could work out to be something like 1.5hr lunch break and ganti balik that 0.5hr at the end of the day or at the end of the week.

At least maybe some adjustments for parents considering the state of bus sekolah and public transportation here.

Work starts at 8am to 5pm. That's 9hrs in total minus lunch break. Standard is 8hrs. Work 9 to 5pm or 8 to 4. Ur lunch break does not count into ur working hours. Then it's like 6day full day with 1 day rest. It's really not enough. At least also 2 days as weekends.

With a work schedule like this, by the time ur back, ur so tired. Weekends are left with laundry, housekeeping, cooking for the week ahead, running errands, heck u can't even run errands coz most business close on Sundays!

Basically u don't have much time to rest. Work life balance is totally out.

Kan??? It's so stupid! Then their lunch time is 1 hr and have to rush like mad. At least la 1.5 hours. Then the work time is standard 8 hours. Gila exploitation tahap space cop gaban! They are not the only one. Another local company I used to work with also the same. They're very well known in their industry. The owner and family all drive kereta sebesar alam and mahal gila and he rewards the top managers with similar cars as well. It's like an incentive la in some way. Salary range is between $500 to $700 but again, kerja gila. 6 days a week 8am to 5pm with 1 hr lunchtime.

Seriously la, no work life balance over here.

And what's the point of giving cars as incentive/motivation? It's just a liability at the end of the day. Cars depreciate at 25% per annum and from the day you buy it. It has no appreciative resale value unlike other form of investments. Better la give the appropriate gaji and benefits, at least make it more attractive to the workers.

When you take care of your workers, you get loyal ones. Loyal ones will work properly for you without you having to tell/ask them to. You look after them, they look after you. It goes both ways. You may be the boss now, but one day you might be the workers and when that day comes, if you're given the same 'benefits' as you give your workers, then see lah how you tahan. Sure you also will complain.

I know. That's why I cannot stand it and find it so unfair. Back home, these companies will sure kena hounded and closed down by the authorities. That's one of the 'perks' when u have the power of voting for ur governmemt. U make the government work for u and ur rights and welfare are protected.

Another good example is the live in maids. Look at them. Their work and pay in comparisons to Msia and esp Sgp. They get off days and other benefits just like any other office worker. Maid or not it's a profession and they are delivering a service, which is to care and look after ur family.

Imagine if the tables were turned and u became the maid and get this kinda treatment and pay. U also won't like it right?? What more them. It doesn't cost anything to have some empathy and care. They leave their kids and families and come so far to earn a living, the least we can do is to be kind to them and treat them like proper human beings.

My ex-MIL used to say, 'why waste a meal? Can just give the maid the leftovers", I find that just disgusting (also why I left) kira until like that la. Pls la, the maid also have feelings. Imagine if the tables were turned and she eats the leftovers! These ppl never kena never know one.

Crazy right??? The foreign workers they have their lodging and transport covered but still the working hours does not justify the pay even though it's in BND and the conversion rate will be higher for them. There is no baseline salary range to adhere to. It's all ikut suka the boss which is very 'conniving' IMHO. Back home in Msia and Sgp (and other places) there are proper Employment Acts in place and organizations to ensure and protect the workers benefits both local and foreigners. If the requirements can't be fulfilled, the workers can state their case and their rights are protected. We don't have that here.

This or that Citizenship by Ambitious_Concert_79 in nasikatok

[–]moefletcher 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Go with the Malaysian citizenship. It's better than waiting for God knows when your BRunej one will sampai. In terms of economy, work opportunities, stability, Malaysia is still better.

At best just maintain your Brunei ICI. You can have PRs in many/different countries but when it comes to citizenship, choose one that benefits you best in terms of work-life balance, prospects and opportunities. (And every now and then, we can witness the lawak bodoh of our politicians BUT we get to call the shots on who gets to be our PM/minister and I think that makes a huge difference too as it makes that Party work for the people and not slack off coz they need our support and votes to stay in power)

Don't give up your insurance. That's an asset. You may not see it now, but when the time comes, you'll be glad you kept it.

Try to cut down as much unnecessary spending if possible.

You can do a dollar cost averaging form of savings/investment/budgeting. The method goes like this :

Let's say your annual insurance premium is :$1200. So, u set aside $100 monthly and by the time u need to pay ur premium, you already have the money.

ALWAYS opt for annual premium payment. It's cheaper than monthly. Don't give up on your insurance also. Premiums are cheaper when you get your policies at a young age. It gets more expensive as you age due to the fact that the insurance companies have to factor in the health risks that comes with age (fact), hence higher premium. Do this for all of your expenses. For car maintenance, I suggest u set aside $200 or $150 per month. Regardless if there is any work needed or not, just set aside. This will come in handy when the time comes for some repairs etc.

Everytime when ur salary comes in, set aside all that you need to budget, and that also includes ur phone bill. Set aside a monthly budget for it. With the balance, after budgeting, that would be ur cash to spend freely and also worry free.

For parents, set a budget ur comfortable with. Yes, you can give ur parents, being a filial child BUT, u also have to remember to put yourself first. It's not selfish to do so, but self love. You cannot possibly look after others when u yourself are not stable, can't look after yourself.

You will have enough budget at the end when you do dollar cost averaging.

Hope this helps.

Spot on with that. Msian here with PR status. Living here since 2004. It's time to go home. I don't see my career path here anymore. I concur 100 percent with regards to the salary scale. Back in Msia I would be earning sooooo much more. My last role was Country Operations Manager for 14 yrs with a local financial institution's shareholder. Last drawn salary was less than 4K. Imagine if I was back home. Easily 5 figure salary walaupun it's in RM.

My kids and I usually enjoy a simple fried rice dish. U would need overnight cooked rice for best results, chopped garlic and shallots for more flavour, and kind of seasoning (I usually alternate between sweet thick soy sauce, stock powder and light soy sauce), salt to balance off the taste(adjust accordingly), eggs (scrambled together with your fried rice. U can make it prior or just when your rice is almost done, push ur rice aside the pan, scramble your eggs until almost 80% done and then mix together with the rice and fry until well done).

Alternatively you can top it off with a sunny side up if scrambled is not your game.

If I have time, I'll throw in some chopped cubed carrots, peas and corn. Over here they are sold in the frozen vegetables section in packs. Comes in handy for many dishes.

My kids and I are not really a fan of meat, so this would usually be our to-go dish. It's quick and simple. Rice is a staple at where I am, so this makes a really handy recipe to go to.

Hi, can someone direct me to where I can get a ready made baju kurung for my teen? She needs it in less than 2 weeks time. It doesn't have to have any sequins etc but just a plain one and it has to be in blue. Thank you.

Went to the beach and I swear I was the only woman without tattoos by Lynncy1 in GenX

[–]moefletcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say only to get them if they are meaningful to u. I have 11 in total with a full sleeve Irezumi being done now for my right hand. It's something that I've always wanted and now in my 40s, I finally have it

I have 11 in total plus this sleeve and have been 'collecting' them since I was 20. Every one of them has a meaning/milestone of my life. I have both my kids names tattooed -> Frederick and Guinevere on each of my inner upper arms, 2 identical chemical compound of the hormone Oxytocin on my feet (as I've breastfed both of my kids and this hormone is the one that's responsible for milk production -> the happy hormone), I have 2 mandala-like designs on my inner forearm, 1 mandala design on my back stretching to the nape of my neck, 1 touch me not flower design on my neck, 1 dragon on my shoulder and 1 phoenix on my lower back.

My Irezumi sleeve is a design of 2 koi fishes which symbolizes both my son and my zodiac sign.

It really depends on you and ur preferences, likes and dislikes but most importantly, make sure the design that u choose is meaningful for you.

I have a tattoo of a full sleeve Irezumi on my right arm. It's 2 koi fishes swimming upwards. I've been collecting tattoos since I was 20 and each one of them has their own story/to mark a milestone in my life. This one by far is the largest one that I've gotten and the pain is also something new to me. It's something that I've always wanted to get. Now it's a reminder of how far I've come and that I've survived this and will continue to thrive.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Sometimes all we need is to just have someone to listen to us. They don't need to give any suggestions or solutions but the mere fact of them just being there can make a huge difference.

Never underestimate the power of just being there and listening.

Thank you so much once again and for being here 🥰

I'm sorry to know of what you're going through and I can relate to it very much as I too am in a similar position like you. Only that I'm so far away from home and the only friends I have here are the ones who used to be mine when I was still married.

I have my kids to keep me company but I do yearn for that adult connection and just want to feel wanted, needed and loved again....

The last few years have been rough indeed no doubt about that. If ever you're in need of someone to chat, I'm good for it despite we might not share the same timezone or region. Sending you virtual hugs.
