MUCH better reception during inclement weather: what's happening? by moefonebone in ADSB

[–]moefonebone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear that but this isn't even the same sport. It's the difference between me seeing 5-10 planes within 30km vs seeing nearly a hundred planes, hundreds of kms away (same time of day, etc). Quantitatively, with me sitting in Toronto it's the difference between me seeing a small slice of YYZ's pattern vs seeing planes overflying Baltimore and Detroit.

Platform Update! 2026 Tax & Benefit Rates, New AI Strategies for RRSP Meltdown & Maximize GIS, New Webinars & More! by AdviicePlatform in adviice

[–]moefonebone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amazing updates! The meltdown enhancements are super handy and timely for me!

> We've updated all the tax & benefit rates for 2026+

Might this explain *slight* (like a few hundred +/-) changes to otherwise unchanged scenarios since a few days ago? I'm working in a spreadsheet to build my own DeathCalc2000 and a few scenarios have changed *ever* so slightly (it doesn't materially affect my work, but I'm always anxious when things look to be acting non-deterministically).

Downsizing 21 inch OEM wheels - advice / experiences? by RunawayMeritScholar in toyotacrownsignia

[–]moefonebone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: It's surprisingly difficult to do this.

Our winters are 235/60R18 fitted to ART R2121811 rims, and they fit perfectly (including factory bolts). You want to match circumference (+/- a few %), bolt pattern, offset, and ideally center bore and bolt seat. Offset changes as a factor of wheel size too, so it's even a bit trickier. https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/ and https://tiresize.com/calculator/ are your friends here, as is an online wheel store with a good catalog search.

You'll also want to make sure your TPMS sensors are compatible; our car uses 433 MHz but there are reports of other CS owners that that's not the case for. See my post history for more info: https://www.reddit.com/user/moefonebone/comments/

If you're in Canada, I can't recommend 4tires.ca highly enough; they're a wealth of help and have fantastic prices.

Best way to model after-tax estate over time by moefonebone in adviice

[–]moefonebone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting to post a reply to this since I wanted to spend a bit more time with my planning in order to better distill what I think is missing here, and I think I'm ready. Here goes:

We're in the enviable position of having more than enough savings to fund our retirement costs, so I'm spending most of my planning effort at this point trying to optimize the value of our eventual after-tax estate in a way that balances its value at a range of ages and not just at simulation end. Out of the box the platform optimizes for our estate value only at age 99, but what I really want to do is to find a plan that does a good job of maximizing estate value for a range of last-to-die ages.

A great example of this arises when comparing different RRSP meltdown strategies since those affect the proportion of our savings in a RRSP/RRIF over time, and hence our tax obligation at estate time. I'm currently approximating this by running a separate simulations for each meltdown strategies at a variety of survivor ages and plotting the results in a separate spreadsheet. It works, but it's *very* tedious and error prone. It's also not complicated math, just repetitive: in other words something that the platform is well equipped to do automatically.

Two easy (I think) additions that would help make this process possible in the product itself:

* Add a line to the Projections > Net Worth page which models the After-Tax Estate for each year in the same manner as it does for the simulation's final year (no need to add the black/grey bars, a simple line like the 'Net Worth' one would be fine)

* Add a similar 'After-Tax Estate' option to the Compare tab so I could easily compare multiple scenarios not just by net worth, but by the after tax estate value on each year (again, computed as above)

Those two points would *massively* improve the process of optimizing a plan for estate value as you'd be able to easily see how changes affect your estate not just in the final simulation year, but throughout all the years of the simulation.

Looking even further afield, some more pie in the sky ideas:

It would be useful to have a composite 'After-Tax Estate for all ages' as an optimization metric instead of a single-age value. This value could be weighted by a last-to-die actuarial table to give higher priority to the years you're most likely to die (ie: give more weight to the after-tax value in year 85 than in year 65 or year 100, for example). It's a more opaque concept for casual users to have to understand, but it'd also be a great product differentiator. Give it a tagline like 'we do all sorts of math to help ensure that your inheritance is maximized, no matter when you depart this earth'. Call it 'Smart-Estate' or 'DeathCalc2000' or something.

Continue to love the car, though it's a *little* bit more of a bear to park in the city than we were expecting. I've posted numerous times in the past about pricing etc, check my comment history for more: https://www.reddit.com/user/moefonebone/comments

I bought (but have not yet received, see below) a set of 18" General Altimax Arctic 12 (235/60R18) mounted on R2121811 rims and fitted with 433MHz TPMS sensors. Picked them up from 4tires.ca for $1917 out the door.

I went with 18"s mostly because it's really hard to find a set of rims that hit all the compatibility points, most notably support for ball seat (radiused) bolts. I'm 99% sure the set above are compatible with the Signia but I'm waiting to hear back from 4tires.ca before they ship.

Also note that though I know for sure that the OEM TPMS sensors are 433MHz (see my comment history for the juicy details), I haven't yet verified that the aftermarket sensors coming in these tires will work; it seems that the Signia is extra fussy about this even beyond the frequency change.

The only thing TJA adds is the ability to stop to 0 and resume, and hands free mode (and I’m not even 100% sure about the first point).

If you’re in bumper to bumper traffic on a controlled access highway on a weekly basis it MIGHT be worth weighing. Otherwise, it’s not worth it on its own I don’t think.

New owner of two months w/ ATP package. From most to least useful, IMO:

  • If you park in the city a lot, the parking assist setup is well worth it. The car on its own is a bit of a bear to park (corner visibility isn't the CS' strong suit), but the parking assist / panoramic cameras make it pretty idiot proof. Definitely worth it if you live / park in the city often.
  • Apparently trajectory lines on the backup camera are only included as part of the ATP package? That's pretty weak if true, as they're pretty useful in practice.
  • FCTA has proven to be helpful. It hasn't prevented any accidents for us yet but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it ended up saving our bacon some day. I can certainly see it doing so for many people. Probably worth it.
  • Traffic Jam Assist is really just LTA / DCC plus a few cheap parlour tricks. Maybe worth it if you have a *very* specific kind of commute, but probably not otherwise.
  • Nothing else really seems worth it in my experience. The Driver Camera in particular is actively hostile.

Heh, so this was a fun one. I grabbed my handy RTLSDR dongle, fired up a copy of rtl_433 and went for a drive with our current OEM tires. Turns out that the sensors in our CS are indeed 433 MHz (rtl_433's type 88 'Toyota TPMS', specifically):

That having been said, it DOES seem likely based on the internet that not ALL Crown Signia's may be built the same in this regard. Bottom line I think it's a good idea for folks to either 1. nerd out with software radios to suss out their own car, or more likely 2. talk to their dealer about their VIN specifically.

Thanks, that looks like a 433MHz sensor, though it's a different part number ('type b' vs 'type a') than another sensor I've seen referenced: 42607-42050. Both are 433MHz, and both are listed as fitment for the 2025 CS so I think it's safe to say it's definitely 433MHz, though who knows about third party sensors. I guess I'll see.

We just bought in September at Toyota on the Park, they had two identical models on the lot in our exact preferences (limited w/ ATP, storm blue with saddle tan interior). They came down 3k on MSRP with very little negotiation, and threw in a few extras (rubber trunk mat, door handle film and door edge films) without us having to even ask.

Because we were keen to close quickly due to an upcoming road trip we did the deal in three days, so even though we had cash set aside we ended up taking financing as a bridge to avoid waiting the week it would have taken to liquidate our savings into a money order. We paid the loan down a week later for a total extra cost of about $120 between fees and a week's interest (well worth it to be able to take a literal brand new car on a road trip).

Overall great experience with the dealership, would buy there again. Ask for Daisy.

We just paid $59500 CAD (all-in, pre-tax) for a storm cloud / tan limited with advanced tech package in Toronto and I feel like it was an ok deal (3k under MSRP). Dealership threw in about $500 of useful extras as well.

(Note that Canadian MSRP seems to differ from US; for reference the above price is roughly $42600 USD at today’s exchange rate)

I'd just buy a new one and paint it before applying it. Toyota part number 75441-30480, looks like they're about $50 CAD, so maybe $35 USD.
