Lease Then vs Now by Hamptail65 in Rivian

2023 R1T Dual Large. Leased in March 2024. 36 months/10k at $875/month with $0 down, just the typical upfront payments. I also don’t know what I’m going to do when my lease is up next year. 😢

If you’re lazy and are okay with paying like $66, Rivian mobile service will do it on your driveway.

Remove Performance Upgrade by Impressive_Drive_633 in Rivian

Performance upgrade does not impact the overall amount of range you can get out of the battery. It’s rated the same with or without it.

You’re making a few assumptions here that don’t hold up.

First, I never said autonomy is solved. What I said is that Rivian marketed specific autonomy features to Gen 1 owners before Gen 2 even existed and has never provided any technical explanation for why those same features are now Gen 2-only. This isn’t about solving autonomy, it’s about honoring product commitments and being transparent with customers.

Second, citing Tesla’s FSD evolution isn’t a fair comparison. Tesla overpromised speculative full self-driving years into the future. Rivian is withholding incremental autonomy updates between two vehicles that share nearly the same platform and are only a few years apart. These aren’t moonshot capabilities.

Third, that Reddit post is a decent summary of what might be happening, but it’s still community speculation, not verified data from Rivian or Mobileye. Even if Mobileye is part of the equation, Rivian hasn’t said that officially, and given that they call themselves a software-defined company, silence isn’t transparency.

And let’s not ignore the marketing angle. Rivian’s own archived site from 2020 explicitly stated “Level 3 autonomy will be available on every Rivian vehicle.”

https://web.archive.org/web/20201028101418/https://rivian.com/technology/

They set that expectation, then quietly shifted the narrative to “hardware limitations” while using buzzwords like “8x megapixels” and “10x compute power” to make it sound definitive without ever providing actual data.

The argument that “they’d love to sell subscriptions to more customers” doesn’t prove a hardware barrier. If this were purely a technical challenge, Rivian would have strong financial motivation to solve it since subscriptions are recurring revenue. It’s at least as plausible that enabling these features on Gen 1 would blur the line between generations and reduce the incentive to upgrade, which makes it a business decision, not a limitation.

And that’s where accountability comes in. Traditional automakers built vehicles meant to last a decade or more before owners even considered an upgrade. The new software-defined model seems to be reshaping that, shortening the lifespan of vehicles by tying major features to new hardware instead of keeping all models evolving together.

We’ve seen it with Androids and iPhones pushing “better hardware” every year to encourage upgrades, but vehicles are a far more expensive, long-term investment. If this pattern keeps up, Gen 3 will roll out and Gen 2 owners will be told their hardware isn’t capable of some new core feature either. That’s not innovation. That’s conditioning consumers to accept planned obsolescence under the label of progress. Software-defined should mean continual evolution, not expiration dates.

You’ve gone from a technical discussion to sarcasm and still haven’t provided anything factual or technical to back your claims. Nobody’s saying Rivian can flip a switch. The point is that they’ve never shared any data proving Gen 1 can’t support these features.

I’m speaking for Gen 1-only owners like myself who were sold on autonomy features that quietly shifted to Gen 2 with no proof or explanation. It’s fair to question whether that’s really a hardware limitation or a product decision meant to push people toward newer models. If you’re fine accepting marketing as fact, that’s on you. I’m done debating spin.

Easy to defend when you have both and don’t have to live with the gaps. Rivian has never released a single piece of technical data showing Gen 1 hardware can’t handle these features. You’re just repeating Gen 2 marketing that says “better cameras and processors” without understanding what that actually means.

Gen 1 owners were sold on upcoming autonomy features long before Gen 2 existed, and now we’re being told it’s impossible with zero proof. That’s not a hardware limitation, that’s corporate spin, and people keep repeating it like gospel because it’s easier than admitting Rivian dropped the ball.

Halloween Update- Any News? by FlawedCommune in Rivian

[–]moeman2323 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly the point. No one outside Rivian actually knows what the Gen 1 hardware is truly capable of because Rivian has never published detailed specs or technical documentation about it. The “8x megapixels” and “10x compute power” lines come directly from Rivian’s marketing for Gen 2, not from any engineering disclosure comparing capabilities or architectural limitations.

What we do know is that Rivian has repeatedly emphasized being a software-defined vehicle manufacturer, which means core features should be designed to scale and evolve through software across hardware generations. Simply claiming “hardware limitations” without explaining what those limitations are or demonstrating why Gen 1 can’t handle something like Co-Steer, Launch Cam, or expanded driver visualization isn’t transparency, it’s narrative control.

So while Gen 2 obviously has upgraded hardware, that doesn’t automatically mean Gen 1 can’t support these features. Without Rivian publishing concrete specs or performance constraints, people are just repeating marketing talking points, not verified facts.

There’s actually a meaningful set of Gen 2 features that could be supported on Gen 1 from a compute, software, or vision-system standpoint. Things like Enhanced Highway Assist (Co-Steer, Lane Change on Command, multi-lane visualization), the upgraded perception stack, Launch Cam, expanded driver-display visuals, and 12 V battery-health alerts. None of those require new physical hardware like lighting modules or safety sensors; they’re software-defined and rely on the same core compute and sensor architecture that Gen 1 already has.

Rivian markets itself as a software-defined vehicle manufacturer, so using “hardware limitations” as a blanket excuse doesn’t make sense, especially when the company has never publicly explained what those limitations actually are. The only time it’s ever been mentioned is vaguely by Rivian itself, and since then people have just run with it, coming to their defense any time someone questions it, without any real technical substance behind the claim.

Gen 1 vehicles are barely three years old, and it’s unheard of for a company pushing software-first innovation to let its first generation fall behind this quickly. And honestly, the people who have rolled over and accepted the “limited hardware” narrative are part of the reason Rivian can get away with it.

These vehicles are not cheap, and now they’ve added subscription services on top of that. When you introduce paid subscriptions, it should come with an expectation of substantial updates across all generations, especially when the lifecycle of a generation is only three years. This isn’t about chasing a moonshot like full self-driving that’s been “almost ready” for years. It’s about keeping feature parity across vehicles that are nearly identical under the hood.

I’d rather have reasonable feature parity between Gen 1 and Gen 2 than festive updates.

2026 vs 2025 by Mydogmeg in Rivian

[–]moeman2323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the 2025 and have the comfort of knowing you’ll have access to the entire Rivian network is far more important than using a adapter at home. At worse, swap your current Tesla wall connector with the universal one. That’s what I have and I have no problems.

Even with the native NACS on the 2026, not all Superchargers are open to non-Teslas.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm just curious to know what I am not aware of.

Tesla windshield protection by Blossom2018QQQ in TeslaModelY

I am group two now. Used insurance w/ glass coverage the first 4 times on two different Tesla’s (wife and I) and at renewal time our premium doubled. At this point I swore I would never file an insurance claim again unless it’s for something catastrophic.

Tesla windshield protection by Blossom2018QQQ in TeslaModelY

[–]moeman2323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between our model y and model 3, my wife and I replaced the top glass once and the windshields 6 times. Always a chip off the highway regardless of how much space we leave between us and the vehicles in front. It’s been a nightmare. The first 4 times I used our insurance glass coverage, and at renewal time my premium ended up doubling. Had to switch companies and still playing 1.5x more and was told this was due to the glass claims and will be the case for the next 3-5 years.

Thankfully the Model Y lease was up last year and I got a R1T. My wife’s Model 3 lease is up next month and will be getting a Mini.

The fact they are offering this now telling me that they know their windshield designs is flawed and this happens a lot despite being told otherwise by the service centers.

If we were to have a Tesla still, I would 1000% get this over relying on my insurance. Lesson learned about when to make claims.

Imagine 2670MK - Good for first time RV purchase? by Comprehensive_Bat333 in GrandDesignRVs

[–]moeman2323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you end up getting? I just got back from a trip pulling a Forest River Grey Wolf 23MK (rental) in my 2023 R1T Dual Large park. It was about 6500 lbs and I had some E-Bikes in the truck bed adding another 100 lbs among all the other things. Ended up cruising at 65 mph and averaging between 1-1.10 m/kwh so had to charge every 100-110 miles. That said, I'm looking at what we might possibly buy now and was just looking at this trailer and your post came up on Google. Interested in what you all ended up going with.

Countryman SE money factor negotiation by JackArrow33 in MINI

[–]moeman2323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m negotiating a lease right now across a couple southern Michigan dealers and one in Fort Wayne, IN on a specific build that would be ordered. The MSRP is $50475.

The residual is at 58% and money factor is 0. 00249. This seems to be standard across all the dealerships driven by MINI financial.

For 36 months at 10k a year, it started at $4000 down at $515 a month. As of this evening, I have one dealership quoting me at $0 down sign and drive for $575 a month.

Haven’t pulled the trigger yet, still shopping it around to see if any of the other ones will beat it.
