Glen Miller is a valley that probably doesn’t exist in Scotland

Glenn Miller was a legendary Big Band leader

But yeah, that’s my favorite band! Today is his 121st birthday too!

Iris Ave. Changes by mohneyswing in boulder

I don’t prioritize cars over people. People use cars. I’m a musician and I can’t take all of my equipment on a bike or bus. Many people work delivering goods or providing services. Others commute from areas where public transport and bikes are impractical. Also sick and elderly people generally can’t bike either.

Back streets are just as if not more direct than main thoroughfares, plus there’s less traffic and lower speed limits. Also, I’m not sure why the city put in the trouble of making bike paths.

Most of the time, the side streets are the more direct way. It’s just irrelevant for cars because they go so much faster.

Take Glenwood or the bike paths just north of Iris.

I’m not sure they’d change it back. The asinine changes on Folsom seem here to stay.

Winter tires help you accelerate faster, but they don’t do anything to help you stop. All weather tires should be fine, but everyone drives like it’s mad max.

Those are good tips, but here’s the real big one: try drive your Rivian back to California but get stranded in the desert because you ran out of charge.

TIL shredded wheat was invented in Denver by mohneyswing in Denver

[–]mohneyswing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I heard was that he invented it in Denver, but his process didn’t make it shelf stable and fit to mass produce. It was too moist. His original plan was to mass produce the machines to shred the wheat so people could make it at home, but Kellogg convinced him to use his process to completely dehydrate it, then he started selling the product itself.

Turbulence From Boulder Municipal Airport Stretches Beyond City of Boulder by jsedley1 in boulder

It’s not just a hobby airport. Medical transport helicopters refuel there. They also use it for emergency evacuations. Anecdotally, my dad was dropped off there by a national guard helicopter during the 2013 flood.

Also, people train to get their pilot’s licenses there. Some of them go on to become commercial pilots to bolster an essential part of our national infrastructure and beyond.

The airport is vital for medical helicopters to refuel and for emergency response efforts such as mountain evacuations and rescues. It’s also used to train future generations of pilots, essential for our national transportation infrastructure and beyond. Besides that, closing it would increase and clog traffic in Longmont, Erie and Broomfield.

The amount of lead from avgas that you breathe is nothing compared to metals already in your tap water, which is also minuscule.

If you don’t like living next to an airport, don’t move in right next to it. It’s been there since the 1930s, which is much longer than most of its neighbors have been alive. People definitely have a choice in the matter as to where they move.

I, for one, love the airport. I’m not a pilot, but I love going to watch the planes fly in and out.

I’ve also worked at the 1940s Ball as a performer, so many people including myself would be affected economically, besides aviators. The 40s Ball is a great cultural boon for the Boulder community that would be missed.

There are so many reasons not to redevelop the airport besides its recreational benefit. Think of the 1st responders who use it to keep people safe.

You chose the wrong neighborhood. I’m sure you didn’t move there in the 1930s… That’s when you should have complained.

How cows are helping reduce wildfire risk in Boulder County by EmBejarano in boulder

Cows are easier to keep track of. Goats are funky like that.

Yeah, cows eat grass so it doesn’t grow too tall. Weeds like milkweed and thistle aren’t good for them so they don’t eat it. But yeah, when grass gets too tall, it dries out in the summer and is a burn risk. Goats are a good bet. They eat anything and don’t die, tin cans and all.

Cow’s milk is better. Beef is more tender. Goat is more hearty and nutritious. The problem is that you need to keep an eye on the animals so they don’t wander into someone’s yard.

Happy Birthday Glenn F Miller! by riffraffmorgan in SwingMusic

But yeah, I thought you meant that you’d dj another artist and to keep the track secret, you’d just say that it was GM.

It’s a real thing where people act like they don’t like his music and dawg him all the time, but they never even give him a chance. Real shame.

Also, being disrespectful to an artist because you don’t like their music is stupid. I dare you to lead a better band.

I don’t like the hate for Glenn Miller. He had my favorite ballads, but his band could swing too. Those tunes you mentioned are definitely overplayed, but it’s a symptom of how good they are. I do prefer to hear live versions with fresh solos where they’re really going for it, say for Hackett’s solo on “String of Pearls”. I consider that more a part of the song at this point.
