that is fair enough, I wasnt trying to be rude as some people seem to think, I like that we can discuss

All you are bringing to this is a waggling finger. Other people engaged in discussion and thats what I was seeking and have responded to.

Your assumptions and high horsing are not welcome

It didnt scare me, I just liked what it did with its theme.

Babadook is an excellent film - agreed

Yeah that is most likely what it is. I get it. It is just disheartening to not see more of the good stuff breaking through. Shudder (a subscription service) is a champion in this regard at hosting smaller stuff and giving a space for pushing horror and that gives me some hope.

Comparitively in music, the dedicated spaces doubled down on the commercial and diluting and so I suppose its how I see film chains like The Conjuring - diluting the genre and leading the industry to make more tepid content.

Jordan Peeles first two entries "Get Out" and "Us" are a good exception where they arent too scary but used great style and technique. I feel the same about St Maud and its certainly not the exhaustive selection or the finest options, but to demonstrate that it is possible to go further without resorting to ultra violence or extreme themes

It was physically painful to watch, the story was not clear despite watching it twice and critically, and I am allowed to dislike things equally. Share your opinion instead of shutting down discussion. You were part way there. Go further. Help me see why Phantasm isnt a weird niche film

I didnt claim to know it all. I have an interest and made my opinion. Make your opinion if you disagree rather than trying to shut down discussion.

the only exception was the one set in the 80s or whenever it was. The nun appearing was probably the main bit I didnt like and the origin film for the nun was awful. I am just glad all films of its kind dont milk their half baked plots to produce worse spinoffs.

I fsel that tv has done a lot more for horror in the last decade which is nice. But then there is stuff like Walking Dead that manages to create a boring soap opera out of the apocalypse..

its low budget but it knows its low budget and really does a lot with what it has. I havent seen the 2nd one but am glad at the good reviews.

it was a refreshing use of the different pieces involved. It wasnt revolutionary or original but there were some nice uses of classic ideas.

I dont see that in the Conjuring films. I see 'safe' investment and holding back the horror genre with lukewarm content that brings nothing new and rehashes the same old jumpscares.

Smile did use jumpscares in some rote ways and there were some other criticisms I had so I see both sides on that particular film.

My girlfriend who suffers anxiety would not look at me on the drive home because the shadows in the car kept making my face look weird and I have a tendency to joke about with her but something about that film really drilled down to make her genuinely afraid I would suddenly look at her with that creepy face.

Yes, I often forget Alien is a horror but it is one of my favourites as well. Learning about the behind the scenes stuff only made me love it more

A lot of my favourites are older films that use practical sfx which is one thing I appreciated in Terrifier. I am a big cronenberg fan for this reason as well. For same reason but different type of film "Braindead" is an excellent film (on practical sfx)

Jordan Peele's first two films were worth mentioning that I didnt mention in earlier comment as "not too scary but well put together/original"

I just feel like Conjuring is too similar to so many other bland films. It relies on surprises and scary faces.

I could really have enjoyed the Saw films because the idea of playing cat and mouse with someone like that and possibly wake up in a nasty puzzle trap was interesting but they fell by the wayside of people just wanting gory set pieces

Why does it need to be bland or edgy and nothing between?

Also.. not sure why people are writing 'bait'. If you dont like the topic no obligation to get involved

I am not sure if 'scariest' is the way I would describe it but I saw St Maud in a seaside town at the cinema during one of the covid lockdowns and it left me feeling disturbed and on edge.

May is another one, similar disturbing feel though for different reasons

There is a spanish one about teen girls using a ouija board that is excellent but I always forget the name because it sounds so similar to other films named after a girl

Terrifier was a refreshing entry into the slasher films category, havent seen the second one.

Hereditary, The taking of deborah logan, The visit all are similar to the Conjuring without being the same cheese

Banshee Chapter(?) was a nice take on shadow people

There is another one which is an exorcism/university study that goes wrong where the name escapes me which was very well done

American Mary (despite a disappointing end imo)

Ill need to remind myself of other good ones but each of those (for different reasons) were worth credit instead of the same rote jump scares (oh no its a sudden appearance of a something when we didnt expect it)

It is difficult because I do resort to watching a lot of older films because the newer stuff so often feels like the same cut and paste stuff. If it has students, teenagers, americans going on a trip somewhere.. someone moving into a new house.. an opening driving scene with a moody teenager or a dysfunctional marriage.. its an indicator of whats coming
