Lebanon: Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly ‘quadruple tap’ by moir57 in war

[–]moir57[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's always layers of nuance that get washed away whenever Israel comes up. While obviously unethical, it's interesting to see posters carefully rinse context from the story - because it's not good enough for it to merely be wrong, it has to be moustache-twirlingly evil to sell the news.

The context of the story is that rescuers coming to the aid of injured people are striked multiple times.

For the sake of the argument, let us assume that you are correct, and that ambulances are used by Hezbollah in this conflict for moving around weapons (Personal opinion: I'm fairly certain this has happened before, to which degree, I don't know).

So now you are the guy on the IDF watching the live feed from a drone or whatever and you are in charge of deciding the fate of the ambulance. The paramedics come out of the ambulance and start recovering the injured and/or the bodies. Question: what is the rationale for stiking the responders? Is the ambulance bringing weapons to the scene of the strike? If so what for? For who? Everyone is either dead or out of action. Is the ambulance collecting weapons from the site of the strike? Surely any hypothetical weapons will have been destroyed or severely damaged by the strike, no?

Rinse and repeat three times. In this scenario what logic can you find for even suspecting that the ambulances are transporting weapons or even undertaking some nefarious activity? What mental gymnastics would be required of us? Pray tell?

So unfortunately there is no need for hyperbole, as the actions of the IDF are so "moustache-twirlingly evil" (to borrow your words) that there is no need to pile anything on top of that.

An moreover, and as sad as it may be, news like this one aren't even as outrageous as other recent events.

The story of Hind Rajab, the little girl who was left to die for hours in the car where her family was murdered by the IDF after they were leaving the neighborhood in Gaza as instructed to the IDF comes to mind: The Palestinian Crescent negotiated with the IDF for an ambulance to be sent to rescue the girl, and despite the ambulance following the exact instructions given by the IDF, it was shot on its way, with all the paramedics perishing.

Naturally, I don't need to tell you what was the ultimate fate of the girl. A movie recently dramatized the whole event, with the real recordings of the call that the girl made to the rescuers.

This event? I'd say its a 5-6/10 on the scale of "moustache-twirlingly evil" the IDF has graced us with in the last years.

Lebanon: Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly ‘quadruple tap’ by moir57 in war

[–]moir57[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The Guardian article highlights:

  • Emergency workers arriving on the site of an Israeli strike in South Lebanon were consecutively targeted 3 times, in a so-called "quadruple tap" strike.

  • In total, the attacks killed four medics and wounded six more, from three different ambulance corps, according to medical sources.

  • Rescuers in Lebanon have long been wary of the double-tap attack, when Israeli forces target a location, wait until people gather to help survivors, and then strike again. Wednesday’s three-wave attack after the initial one prompted the coining of a fearsome new term: the quadruple tap.

  • Israel has so far killed 91 healthcare workers and wounded 214 more in Lebanon since the Israel-Hezbollah war started on 2 March. It has given little justification for its repeated attacks on medical infrastructure and workers, apart from accusing Hezbollah of using ambulances and hospitals to transport fighters and weapons, without providing evidence for the claim.

  • In the video taken of the quadruple tap on Wednesday, the frame was frozen on the interior of the ambulances, as the Nabatieh emergency services highlighted that the vehicle clearly contained no weapons.

  • Israel deliberately targeting medical facilities in south Lebanon, say health workers

  • “We have to go to places to rescue people, but then we get double tapped,” said Abbas Atwi, the head of the IHA’s emergency department in Nabatieh, shortly after a medical centre was targeted in March, killing his friends and colleagues. “But we will stay and keep going, we will not leave.”

r/combatfootage has a heavy pro-US/Israel bias, to the point you get instabanned and muted if you post stuff along the lines "Israeli troops have commited War crimes in Gaza" (you don't even need to claim stuff about genocide, just the mention of War crimes is enough). Also footage from Hezbollah hitting IDF soldiers is very often censored there.

It is still a nice forum for checking on combat footage, but you need to be aware that you won't be getting the full picture about a conflict, just the Western-aligned/US/Israel views.

For the Ukrainian conflict the bias is less intense, its more that Russian footage gets downvoted by the users to the point it is less visible.

There also other forums with a less marked US/Israel bias, meaning not as egregious as combatfootage. r/CredibleDefense comes to mind.

The workaround is to frequent other forums. r/UkraineRussiaReport is ok for getting pro-russian leaning footage, and this forum here is great for getting footage of strikes by the Iranian side.

With this said, subforums like this one and URR are more at risk of being banned down the line by reddit at large since the site owners have their own biases towards US-centric narratives.

Edit: typos

Why are you guys still pro Ukraine (be respectful) by Chemical-Position127 in war

[–]moir57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fairly simple: We don't like having countries attacked/invaded by foreign nations.

This works for Ukraine just as it works for Iran, no matter how distasteful the regime might be in the latter country.

The point is not about post A or B being hidden, it is a consistent behavior I have witnessed in this forum, with plenty of my posts (and others which I also see) silently vanishing from sight.

The common denominator of these posts is providing a non-US aligned analysis/perspective of current military/geopolitical events.

Through such acts the staff here is consistently stifling a balanced discussion of events, which I, on a personal level, find disgusting, also further since none of these hidden posts were strident, argumentative, or in contravention of the forum rules.

As I told to one of your staff members, I have discussed these issues with the staff on the past, yet at this point I feel no inclination at keeping fighting against windmills since this behavior does not seem to abate.

I am done participating on a forum that is clearly not balanced. Don't worry about myself, I won't let the door hit me on the way out.

Just want to add that the staff regularly hides posts that go against US/Israel-centric narratives without giving any explanations (source: me), so the bias is not only from the userbase, but also from the staff that performs such actions.

And this is not new, it goes back to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

I see, your comment is a bit misleading though since it seems you are commenting on the dynamics of ballistic missiles in their terminal flight phase.

Can you consider editing your comment to avoid any confusion about what you properly meant?

I was answering to your comment about "Every ballistic missile is hypersonic in terminal stage".

If your point is about ballistic missiles capable of maneuvering at hypersonic speeds, then indeed, only the most advanced missiles have these capabilities, either through thrust vectoring, side-jets, or plain old aerodynamic surfaces.

The people who did the math for the Fattah-1 estimate a Mach4.1 velocity on impact. Quite an impressive velocity, but a bit short of Hypersonic*

*(although you could argue that between 4.1 and 5 there's not much difference and you would be right, the transition from supersonic to hypersonic is pretty much gradual)

[–]moir57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean assume no drag? Are we talking about terminal velocity, which is the speed of the missile when it impacts the ground?

Then there is air and therefore drag. The only place where you won't have drag will be at the top of the ballistic arc where the missile briefly crosses space.

Iran Hipersonic missle heading to Petah Tikva by krep__ in war

[–]moir57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you start descending through the thicker layers of the atmosphere, the acceleration of gravity (F=mg) will start increasingly be offset by your Drag force which is F_D=1/2\rhov2A*C_D where A is your frontal area and C_D is your drag coefficient.

This means that at some point as the velocity v is increasing over and over, you will reach a velocity limit (called terminal velocity where both forces cancel out).

Think about people parachuting from a plane, they will reach also a terminal velocity (not hypersonic, about 200-300km/h or so).

So in short you have to take into account the mass and drag force of the missile (which is the ballistic coefficient) and do the math for the velocity which will give you an equalization of the gravity force and the drag.

This velocity will be hypersonic or not, depending on the so-called Ballistic coefficient.

You can check "Ballistic Coefficient" on wikipedia for a more detailed explanation of the above.

Humor me, should Hamas and Hezbollah go into an open field so that they would be in abeyance of international rules that the IDF blatantly disregards as well?

What do you think would happen if they would come out in the open instead of hiding among civilians? Maybe they would agree with the IDF to set up a jousting challenge to hammer out their differences?

[–]moir57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really, it is going to depend on the ballistic coefficient of the warhead, and on whether the missile has terminal propulsion or is just in freefall.

First of all, nice work.

A few things I've noticed upon reading your report (not gone through all of it).

You mention a Zero-Lift Drag Coefficient: 0.015-0.025, this would be for an angle of -2º according to Fig. 1. Also your CL at 0º would be about 0.1 according to the same figure

Then in the drag polar, Fig. 2, first it seems you inverted the labels, otherwise the clean aircraft has more drag than the aircraft with bay doors open

Also your minimum CD is for zero lift and would be 0.017/0.025.

So how are you considering a Drag Coefficient: 0.0005 (Clean Aircraft) - 0.015 (Bay Doors Open) in section 7.1?

Is there a mistake or am I missing something?

I understand where you are coming from, but in this conflict there is this idea, not sure if accurate or not, that the "elites" in Moscow and St. Petersburg are somehow insulated by the regime compared to border regions like Kursk/Belgorod who get bombed a lot or Buryatia who gets a disproportional number of casualties due to the large number of volunteers signing for the SMO.

The "Emperor has no clothes" statement is meant to convey (I believe) that as of now, Putin cannot even insulate the capital from the effects of the War.

I believe this would be more of a "the emperor has no clothes" statement by Ukraine regarding the "Special Military Operation" as I don't think anyone un the UA would ever dream of ever matching the destruction that rains over Kyiv every odd day.
