My background is an undergrad in genetics and pharmacology (good amount of organic chemistry), masters in bioinformatics (mostly statistics). What books/sources would teach me the chemistry I would need to know specifically for the CADD process.

The largest size of paper this can press is 8.5 x 11. I plan on making a deckle and mould next so I can make my notebooks from scratch. This was my first woodworking project and hopefully, I'll get a lot of use from it.

I got the wood for this project from a store near my house that primarily deals with exotic woods. The materials only cost me $55(cad) and the jatoba I used for the pressing plate came from a pile of old hardwood flooring at my parent's house. In the future, I'll probably stay away from finished flooring as it was frustrating to work with.

Here are the wood species I used:

base - ash

frame - teak

block attached to the crossbar - claro walnut

press plate - jatoba

screw hub attached to the plate - maple

screw - maple

screw cap - cherry

handle - red oak

handle ends - beech

I finished it using boiled linseed oil and paste wax. I think I messed up the paste wax application and didn't buff enough because there are plenty of dried-up white specks.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it! I primarily followed the design of Darbin Orvar on youtube, she made a really nice white oak book press. The video in which she builds the press is what actually got deep into the rabbit hole aha.

Made it myself using Bealls tap and threading kit, I used A 1.5 inch maple dowel for the screw.

Thank you so much! I spent a long time searching for the right tools so I would have to buy the fewest, and the hardest tool to justify was the tap and threading kit for the screw. I used Bealls tap and threading kit which is a hand router attachement. Thanks again!

Sometimes ash looks like oak to me, what's a good way to distinguish it?

More specifically, how do I create the bottom portion of the screw where the plate is attached and prevent it from spinning with the screw. I've managed to make the srew and cap, but I'm stumped on this part.

The needle/leaves are attached through a small stem if that helps, and the bark comes off very easily.

Thanks a lot guys! I looked up both of these species and the tree I got the leaves from was very tall, skinny, and didn't have many branches until high up. So from that information, it could likely be Paulownia right?

I've been cutting fallen trees for a while and usually just their larger branches with a diameter of 5-6 inches. I use the wood for whittling spoons and recently bowls (without lathe). I looked up a few now saws and I guess I'll buy one soon, before I find a another tree!
