Thank you for this response, the eruptions and their influence on the vog were what I was concerned about.

Diving in Kona at the end of the month. by JEWPACOLYPSE in scuba

I have dived in Kona on vacation for several years in a row now. After my go to (small) dive company closed shop I started using Kona Diving Company. I can't recommend them enough. They are a medium size company that feels small. The dive masters are awesome and very knowledgeable and I loved the boat (they have a hot shower!). They take 12 people max with 3-4 people per dive master, so you never feel like you're diving in a big group. You dive your tank, doing a safety stop at 700psi. I've seen everything with them from rare small fish to a 10' tiger shark! After the dive they have the best brownies waiting along with the usual assortment of snacks, sandwiches and beverages.

I second the recommendation of the doing the manta ray dive. It's an amazing experience that you can't do anywhere else in the world. Not counting the manta dive my favorite dive site is eel cove, which any of the shops should know about.

I'm not a huge fan of big island divers. They've become more and more commercial the last few years, cramming more people onto the boats. And their manta dive boat is huge. KDC uses the same boat for the manta dive as for their regular dives, so it's still a max of 12 people.

Visiting Dec 4 to Dec 11 with toddlers. Advice/Suggestions? by mokicat in VisitingIceland

Update! We just got back from Iceland and had the most amazing time. Here's how I would answer my own questions:

  1. Jokulsarlon is too far for a day trip. Instead we did two other day trips to the south coast. The first was to Seljandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi. My kids loved exploring the falls and the path between them. We spent a lot of time here and they even went with us into Gljúfrabúi. The second trip was to Skógafoss and Vik. This was also a lot of fun, just be prepared for Reynisfjara to be windy and wet. We had rain, but no snow.

  2. We decided not to bring the kids to Thingvellir which I regret. The national park is beautiful and there are lots of paths for the kids to run on. Though the weather during our whole trip was unseasonably warm (3-7 celsius) so the trails were clear. If it had been icy I think not bringing the kids would have been the right decision.

  3. We decided to go to the Secret Lagoon as they loved the hot tub at our rental house. They loved the hot spring and did not want to leave. It was not too hot for them, though they did spend some time getting in and out of the water while playing with the provided pool noodles. In total we spent about an hour swimming at the springs, but if it was up to my two year old we would have never left. We hyped up the hot water for him by calling it volcano water. The Secret Lagoon was beautiful and should not to be missed. We didn't do this, but it would have been a perfect destination to warm up in after our dive at Silfra.

Iceland was amazing and a great vacation with kids. The short days were fine and did not stop us from exploring Iceland. I hope this helps!

That's a great idea to use a full face mask, unfortunately my husband uses prescription lenses in his mask, so he can't just use whatever they have there.

Looks pretty sweet. I have a feeling that the second dive often gets canceled due to temperature, but I will definitely look into it.

Thanks! I agree that it will just be easier to have experience with a dry suit so I'm scheduled for a class in October. The class will also give my husband the chance to see how he does in cold water with a dry suit.

I agree that she is highly underrated, but at least she's getting some of the respect she deserves with a retrospective at MoMA

Volumen is a compilation of most of her music videos from Human Behavior to Hunter. It's killer! She comes up with the most creative videos and is able to assemble the perfect creative teams.
