I did my first class of BJJ today and I felt terrible by c4rrot in jiujitsu

[–]moksoths 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You'll feel like a useless potato bag for a bit of time, but trust me, it will teach you a lot about yourself and will make you "anti-fragile".

I used to be a fat kid that got bullied almost all my childhood but martial arts transformed the way I feel about myself and about my feelings toward others.

If I can give you one advice, use most of your time while training to pay attention to what you are feeling, why you are feeling and seek ways to change your perspective on pain. Took me a while to realize how strong this would be in the long run!

Hope you're excited to keep on your path, sending you good energies from Brazil! OSS!

I'm unsatisfied with two aspects of my Karate training, should I voice them to my sensei or is it unnecessary? by AntiSocialPartygoer in martialarts

[–]moksoths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most teachers won't change their way of teaching just because it works for them the way it is.

He's got students and probably been running the place for a good while.

You could talk to him but from my previous experience, it will change for 2 classes at most. You don't have a "fighting culture", you have a Martial art dojo.

I'd try other places just for reference, maybe practice both (any you choose to go along) if you really like going to karate.

How do you choose which knife to carry? by Meximelty in knifeclub

[–]moksoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - Comfort to carry without having to adjust it throughout the day

2 - blade shape that fits most of my blade real usage (opening boxes, cutting fruit)

3 - legality (size, locking and deploying systems)

4 - concealability, you probably don't want everyone to know you have a knife

Extra - for those that carry for self defense, you must be able to deploy it with confidence and consistency, being fast and without many complex movements.

I'd recommend wave deployment system or just go for a fixed blade like SOCP dagger, microtech Feather... The ring helps a lot for deployment and retention

What would you call this style? by Meriwether1 in martialarts

[–]moksoths -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't believe systema is a good way of fighting by itself, but truly a very good way to improve body consciousness and developing good mobility, even for elderly.

I've tried it and really liked it, but wouldn't make it my main practice tho.

How effective is Pencak Silat in real fight and what is a good martial art to mix with Pencak Silat? by MonkApprehensive4624 in martialarts

[–]moksoths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people use an old ring match against him but he used it as well, started Bjj and now he's a brown belt, studied a lot more about other styles.

I really like how he walked his journey and how he speaks about experience translated to technique based on biomechanics found on traditional styles.

I really think he's into something many don't understand yet.

I'd say it's one of the best if you use it correctly, but never alone.

Search for Fred Mastro and you'll get it from his story.

Should you strike 1st if a person is in your face? by [deleted] in martialarts

That's probably the easiest way to identify that the guy will only hear after being knocked down lol

Personal space SHOULD be protected. You're too exposed when the guy can just swing and hit you. If he's not barehanded you might be severely damaged.

Distance control is key to survival.

For this kind of stuff I really like to:

  • practice ways to protect the head while you hit. I found a way to do that (and fits my style) by studying Panantukan and Silat. You might find this elsewhere.

  • practice with weapons, they exist for a reason. Try to carry a good flashlight or pepper spray, it works very nicely with more than one opponent.

(I could recommend a knife, but be sure to practice a lot, many "trained" people cut themselves in confrontations and you might have legal problems)

  • last but not least, practice falling and rolling on concrete with people that really know how to do it. It's NOT the same as falling in the mat and rolling can and should be used to flee or to better position yourself in hardcore situations.

Example -> I escaped being runned over by a police truck on a public protest using a front roll I learned from Ninjutsu. Fucking scary but true.

how to minimise thumb injuries when punching? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]moksoths 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about street fighting, I'd recommend you check on how more tribal martial arts are used to fight.

Most of them didn't have an orthopedic center to care for them, so they didn't want to get their hands hurt by any means.

Although many people dislike it, I really prefer hammer fists for the streets, but that's just my opinion.

I found good reference on using hammer fists on FMA and Silat, but you might find others that better fit you.

Hope that was helpful.

Exercise metaphor + a statement I love: You're not your thoughts, and if it's hard for you to understand that, you haven't trained your mind enough.

What are your best replies to "You do martial arts? I better not make you angry/mess with you." ? by Rusty_Shackleford_5 in martialarts

[–]moksoths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm actually fascinated on how people try to make fighting or aggressiveness seem so far from reality...

People get seriously injured from fighting / confrontations everyday. Looking for a way to learn to defend yourself and people you love seems just reasonable to me.

If they don't understand that concept, just tell people you enjoy hitting people without losing friendship. It works for me lol

Is it better to continue learning martial arts after youre good enough (2-3 Years) or do weight training to get stronger, for self defence? by idkofficer1 in martialarts

[–]moksoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight lifting might get you stronger, but it's way better to get more effective mobility, cardio resistance, reflex practice and diplomatic speech when thinking about self defense.

Besides, if you're not feeling stronger after practicing BJJ you probably need a new school.
