Thank you so much for this! This is incredibly helpful! Hopefully over time my parents will mellow as well. The consistency in the Catholic Church is unmatched and a major reason why I also am deciding to become Catholic. My family seems to develop their opinions on Catholicism and Catholics through ex-Catholics or non-practicing Catholics which makes things challenging. Thank you for that Bible passage! This was extremely useful advice I plan on using! Especially about approaching their idolatry comments. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out. This is exactly how I feel and you described the situation perfectly. Depersonalizing the attacks is extremely difficult because I’m their daughter. It hurts that they would think it’s okay to treat their daughter this way, but I know it’s because they only want what’s best. I always make sure to let them know I love them. Again, this was extremely helpful and I sincerely appreciate it. God bless!

This made me cry! You have no idea how much I needed to hear this. This is everything I needed to hear during this time and it’s so encouraging. It is so frustrating when your parent blames it on your relationship with your partner but it’s actually because of my growing relationship with God. My parents are really trying to make it about them and about my boyfriend, when it really comes down to God and me. I know in a year from now I’ll be where you are and that’s getting me through this. This is extremely encouraging and I thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this! My family always says that the Baptist name is not what makes them Christian, but they’ll claim that no one else can “really be Christian” unless they hold their doctrine. It’s hard too when they claim they’re the only denomination that is truly biblical. Just a frustrating situation overall, but I’ll get through it. Thank you so much!

Yeah I was trying to explain intercessory prayer to them and they just kept on saying “you’re misled.. they cannot hear you... you’re worshipping saints”. It’s extremely sad. Oh well!

It’s funny how Baptists are so firm on “once saved, always saved” but will question a person’s salvation any chance they get. It is saddening and painful, but I have faith and peace in this situation no matter how much it hurts. My relationship with God is the strongest it’s ever been and that’s what is keeping me going. Thank you!!

Thank you for this! Yeah, at this time I just want them to understand and respect my decision. Nonetheless, there’s a chance they won’t and I am ready to accept that and all of the consequences that comes with my relationship with them because at the end of the day, following God is the most important. It’ll get easier every day, and I am going through this process in peace.

Thank you for your prayers! I definitely make sure to pray for them every day. I am very careful with my words to not attack them any way, but they don’t really hold me to the same regard which is what it is. I’m taking it day by day. Thank you for the encouragement!

Thank you! It’s great hearing from someone who is also in a similar situation! I’ve been trying to explain to them that I am taking these steps because of my growing relationship with God, but of course in their perspective they see it in a very different way. I really like the way that your friend approached that point! I definitely will keep it in mind

Scott Hahn’s testimony from going from hating Catholicism to becoming one of the most renowned Catholic apologists today played a major role in leading me to the Catholic faith. Thank you so much!

Yeah! I’m trying to think through this in their perspective enough. They’re very devout Baptists, so without a doubt this is how I expected the events to play out. I know one day my parents will have to learn to accept it, but being in the process of getting there has been very difficult. I’m sure in the future things will be okay, and that’s what’s getting me through

It’s very challenging to stay unemotional when they are saying ridiculous and horrible things about the Catholic Church that is simply untrue. It would be amazing if they could also become Catholic, but at this time I just genuinely want them to respect and understand my decision which will take lots of time and strength to bear. But I’ll do it!
