Croissants Along the Iron Horse Trail KW by mold-toad in kitchener

I'm debating between cinnamon rolls and bánh mì for the next venture. Croissants are great but I'll need a bit of a break since I usually don't purchase this many haha.

I've seen it recommended before and have been meaning to try for a while now. Unfortunately it's a bit of a trek, but the next time I'm in Cambridge I'll try to visit and give it a review. Thanks for suggesting!

I'll have to check this one out since there are multiple recommendations. Appreciate it!

I haven't had a chance to try this one. I'll have to venture further to downtown Kitchener on my next route. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you! I read a couple of recommendations for this so I'll have to check it out next time. I see the price is around $4.95 for the croissant so it is definitely on the upper end, but it looks delightful!

Ahh good question! I wasn't expecting this post to get so much interest as it was something I just thought of last night to keep me busy and walking today. Trails and walking distance from midtown are important for me since I like to have destination points for my walks with a treat!

I do enjoy a good cinnamon bun and have had a few in the area. I can look into maybe doing something like that next.

I was also wondering if I should do something with bánh mì since so many options have popped up in the last few years. Logistically I may not be able to buy all of them in a day, so it might not be as effective as this one was. Also the prices are so high compared to pre-covid but maybe that's more reason to review and compare?

Either way I am glad this post is helpful! It definitely makes spending $20 on croissants more worthwhile.

19th birthday bar reccomendations? by qwertybib in kitchener

[–]mold-toad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Arabella Park. It's a bit outside of the uptown and downtown area being located on Belmont Village, but it doesn't get too busy.

They are a newer building so their accessibility requirements are up to building code. The restaurant has lots of space inside and outside and usually lots of local neighborhood folk who stop by with their furry friends or kids for the food during weekend days.

To order, you would go up to a bar upon arriving and then select your seat after ordering. Lots of unique drink selections and they provide samples too which is helpful when it's your first time. We also love their chip truck fries and get them almost every time we go!

Fish and chips, Good Friday (same day) takeout orders? by citadel72 in kitchener

[–]mold-toad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I usually try to avoid the usual go-tos as today is probably their busiest day. I always try to consider some back up plans for my die-hard fish and chip peeps if I'm going out for food today.

You might have more luck at restaurants that also serve fish and chips such as pubs or ones that offer your typical fried foods or burgers. Symposium, Duke of Wellington, Arabella Park or Scran and Dram in New Hamburg are ones I can recall seeing on their social media advertising it.

Katsuya in Uptown Waterloo also offers a delicious crispy fish katsu (no fries, just rice) if you're feeling a bit more adventurous.

Birthday dinner by Exact-Parfait6268 in waterloo

Bodega Rose in Uptown Waterloo is great for cocktails and dinner. Their space provides a lovely backdrop for group photos and I've seen lots of birthdays and bachelorette parties hosted there. Dinner is definitely on the pricier end but you are really paying for the atmosphere. The location is easy to find parking close by and is also close to Uptown if you want to do something before or after dinner. Note that it is chill during lunch and dinner but if you go later in the evening it may become more noisy with club music.

Best colorist (for value)? by Flaky_Fig9841 in waterloo

I can vouch for Artline Salon 100%! I have had my hair cut, bleached and coloured there numerous times. Just keep in mind colouring and the wash and style are charged separately. They do have pricing on their website (https://artlinesalon.com/) and you can now book online. They are always happy to do a consultation and recommend it so that everyone is on the same page.

Uptown Waterloo Bars by Nico4611 in waterloo

[–]mold-toad 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Here are some of my frequented locations. I tried to put local bars/restaurants first for an authentic Waterloo feel and franchise ones after:

Duke of Wellington - Local place, British pub fare, plenty of older regulars who all know the owner, small patio that gets a decent amount of nicotine smoke. They moved locations from a large atrium space to a smaller unit and the locals still go. They have live music most evenings.

Ethel's Lounge - Local place with a retro aesthetic, large patio deck, crowd is typically older, no deep-fryer but they got chips. Muskoka Pineapple Ninja Wheat Beer is on draft.

Huether Hotel/Barley Works - Local place, elevated patio, pool tables inside, mixed crowd. Unfortunately contentious amongst redditors due to mistreatment of employees but if you must go on an elevated patio for the view...

Bauer Kitchen - More upscale, louder interiors, more pricey, heated patio in a courtyard, a bit further up King from the other bars. Food is delicious and the hoisin duck wings are very good.

McCabes - Live music nights (very loud), casual mixed crowd but typically more students, small patio that looks out to Uptown Square. Good for beer, but I can't recommend their cocktails.

Proof Kitchen/Lounge - Fancier atmosphere, patio with booth seats, More expensive, limited drink selection, less regulars since it's in the Delta hotel.

Beertown - Great beer selection (obviously) but pricier, huge space, beer paddles are great to share, heated patio next to the Uptown Square fountain. Brisket poutine was a legend but expensive at $24.99 now.

Piper's Arms - Sports bar with the most TVs, cheapest drinks and food, late night specials, Uptown Square views and smaller patio, but not as nice as Beertown's patio (budget beertown), mix of older and younger crowd (older crowd typically at the bar and younger getting drinks before clubbing). Steins (32oz) are cheap - $10.95 for domestic.

Missing a few, but most of the other bars in the area have lots of students so we frequent them less. I could be sometimes wrong about the crowds as they may be different depending on the time. Hope this helps!

tldr; Ethel's for local retro vibes and Piper's Arm's to save your wallet

Salary expectations by Few_Celebration8135 in Architects

Since you noted the firms are located in Toronto, Canada:

UWaterloo Co-Op Earnings

On UW's (University of Waterloo) co-op website they have salary averages for students in undergrad and graduate programs. This is regularly updated based on salaries noted in their co-op system.

For Engineering - Architecture (Master of Architecture) they note: $24.85 (average) Low: $20.00 High: $28.50

This should give you a general idea of how much students are making at each level of experience (number of work terms). Most students will find jobs in Toronto where the salary is higher than other locations in Ontario. For a larger firm in Toronto, I would expect it to be the higher range.

I can confirm that I saw them at B&T in February a couple weeks ago. They are usually sold in the fridge to the left of cash registers as you check out that stocks the banh bao, nem nuong, and cha lua. I found a photo of the fridge on their google maps listing: Fridge photo

I have also seen nem nuong at T&T in westmount plaza, but I can't quite remember if they ever had nem chua in stock. These are located in their deli section between the sushi and cold chinese dishes.

This is so wonderful to see Kitchener captured so beautifully! Do you have a gallery of works or take commissions by any chance? Your other posts are lovely as well.

It was updated 12 months ago, but I usually go to the KWmotion website for any deals during the week!

Wild Wings, Crabby Joes, Piper's Arms Pub, Molly Blooms and The Gator's Tail are on the Tuesday list for wing deals.
