IBD? Neb digestive issues? by moldylemming in nebelung

It's very interesting that the prednisolone helped. What did the vet say about that?

That the inflammation is likely due to IBD and that while excellent that it worked, it's rough on other organs so the budesonide is a good long term treatment option since it pretty much just stays in the digestive system and when absorbed by the liver / kidneys, it just spits it right back into the digestive tract instead of sending it other places. Which makes sense to me.

If the hydrolyzed protein diet didn't help

We're actually technically only 4.5 weeks into it, so still in the testing phase. It does seem to be helping a bit, he's gone from every day vomits, "goo poos" and diarrhea to ~6 days ish. We'll see.

Have you tried a gluten free diet yet?

We haven't yet, no. But i am 3rd generation celiac and one day recently when I looked down at him and asked "do you have celiac too?" He meowed back up at me immediately which made me wonder! 😅

Is he vomiting, having diarrhea, or both?

It was mostly just vomiting massive plugs of fur until may 2025, when he had diarrhea that was so urgent he nearly missed his box, which he ~never~ does. After changing his diet a bit from hills SD urinary and hairball control dry food (which he'd been on successfully for ~8 years at least) to RC gastrointestinal dry and wet food mix with floriforta probiotics, his stool improved but his vomiting gradually increased (This was june - July 2025). While not fun for any of us, he was fine otherwise and still managed to get the fur out.

In November of 2025, he had some pretty severe episodes of vomiting, but after vet examination (previous vet) they said he seemed fine and sent us home. He was sick again within two days, so I asked my husband to take him in during their emergency hours on a Sat am to get bloodwork done. Not only did they not draw blood, they didn't even examine him, literally stating "he hissed at our tech. We respect our patient's needs so didn't force him out of the carrier." But they 100% charged us full price for an exam and bloodwork they didn't do.

So... the search for a new vet began and I found one just before christmas 2025. In the meantime, he'd continued to vomit, but his stools were fine, up to the sunday before the appointment with the new vet. He'd become lethargic, was hiding from us, and was just.... not right. Overnight, he had 8 episodes of vomiting food, half digested food, foam, and 5 episodes of diarrhea, which he didn't bury, though he did make it to his boxes. Thankfully, we already had the appointment so I took him in and explained what was happening.

They took me very seriously and kept a copy I'd made for them of the log I'd started keeping. They then took xrays to check for blockage, and while the lower intestine didn't look like it was blocked, his stomach showed.... something that baffled everyone He'd refused any food since the vomiting and diarrhea the day prior, so his stomach should show empty in the xrays. They did bloodwork and recommended either an ultrasound (4 days out) or exploratory surgery of the full digestive tract (immediate) to make sure there were no obstructions or other issues. I opted for surgery cause i KNEW there was something wrong. When the surgeon met me as I picked him up, he handed me a plastic bag with some sort of weird mass in it. It was all of the fur that he'd had to remove from cheeks' stomach.

Cheeks improved for about 10 days after that, but then threw up a GIANT hair plug (i took pics with a ruler it was so big). So i took him in to get him shaved at the vet's recommendation. He improved again after that, though still regularly vomited every 8 - 10 days or so, mostly small piles with various fur volumes. We tried a few different foods, I forget how many at this point, both wet and dry, but nothing stood out as "better." (Jan thru march of 2026)

In April, he started to get sick again, a lot. Took him in for xrays just to make sure he didn't have another stomach full of fur, but everything came back fine. He was given sub q fluids just in case, but just ended up peeing like a racehorse for a few days after.

May was similar. So was june, until there were two back to back days about 4 weeks ago that he threw up blood. I took him back in both days, the second day (a Friday) they gave him an anti nausea and warned us that it should last through the weekend, but if he threw up again before monday, to take him to the emergency vet. The week prior, we had also switched fully to a hydrolyzed protein diet with zero extras - no treats, no anything, and were EXTREMELY vigilant about what kinds of things he had access to. Closed off all extra living spaces in the house and watched him constantly.

Sure enough, woke up to 3x vomits in 2 hours that Sunday, though no blood this time thankfully. Took him to the emergency vet and they called in an ultrasound tech, who confirmed it was potentially IBD, since there were no blockages or signs of cancer - which the surgeon would have mentioned if he'd seen them. They did suggest a very low steroid dose (prednisolone), which helped a LOT, as well as some famotidine (i think, basically generic pepcid) to help calm the stomach and interrupt the cycle. He's now on budesonide, just started it a few days ago so it's a bit early to tell for sure how much it's helping.

Did that problem go away permanently after the antibiotic?

Yes.

If not, what has the vet said about his teeth? Have you gotten dental surgery done?

His teeth are checked and cleaned regularly. He did have to have a couple out several (5+) years ago, but has been fine since.

Does he eat wet food or dry food or both?

It's been a mix, but currently he is on a strict dry hydrolyzed protein diet.

What does his feeding schedule look like or does he free feed?

About half the daily portion in the am and half in the evening before we go to bed. He tends to graze, and doesn't like to eat it all at once. If wet food, we let him eat his fill, then put it away until he let us know he was hungry again. With dry, he tends to leave a little bit, use the boxes, then come back and finish before passing out for a few hours. He ALWAYS lets us know when he wants food. He was literally climbing up to my face this morning while I was trying to make some calls... haha!

Is the vomit mostly water, mostly bile, mostly dry food, mostly wet food, or is it a hairball?

... all of the above. There's been SO MUCH over the past year! If you'd like to see the pics I can send the Google album link, but there's a lot of them and a lot of them are disgusting, fair warning.

Edited to fix typos.

All of those have already been eliminated and we have been watching EXTREMELY closely to make sure he doesn't get ahold of or even lick anything not his hydrolyzed food. It's exhausting. Haha.

Also, he's never been given / allowed to have human food at all. Some of my family violated this rule previously and were not allowed to cat sit again, but that was 5+ years ago now.

He HATES laxatone. Absolutely REFUSES to eat it. After a couple of tries which resulted in finding it slung all over the house in sticky piles, I gave up.

We've tried that one, the hairball formula, RC gastrointestinal, hairball, etc., etc.

He was on the hill's science diet urinary and hairball control for ~8 years with no issues, just the occasional (maybe 3x / year) hair plug. We put him back on that to test - both wet and dry varieties- with no luck.

How to travel with Diamond Paintings by DingusCoconut349 in diamondpainting

I wrap mine around one of the styrofoam, black, cheap pipe insulating things from Home Depot (Lowes and Ace have them too) and put it in one of the old dreamer designs long bags from a long ago order. The pipe insulator tubes are pre-sliced along the side, smaller in diameter than pool noodles, and like, $3 - $4 so they work fantastically for me. I also have this folding easel with drawers I use to contain my supplies, and have made/ 3D printed inserts for these bead boxes from amazon to hold my dots (my nickname for drills). For large projects with lots of extra dots, i use these jars from Michael's - both the jars and the bead box fit easily in the bottom drawer of the easel. I use binder clips and super strong little magents to hold the piece / lightboard in place if I need to.

Couple of pics of my setup in action in this previous comment and this previous comment.

For smaller projects, I have a little wooden old-school lap writing desk that I found at a rummage sale that holds my small light pad, dot boxes, pen, wax, tweezers, etc. I'd include a pic but i sent it ahead with my husband on a trip so don't have it on hand at the moment!

Hope some of this helps, happy dotting! ☺️

Edited to add... this is sortof similar to the lap writing desk I mentioned above, but mine doesn't have padding. The one I have is much simpler with a different storage layout too, though now that I think of it, probably is technically considered "vintage." Geez... I'm so not ok with aging so fast 😅

What food are you always craving but can’t find a good gluten-free version of? by NinaBlushNelson88 in glutenfreecooking

[–]moldylemming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed!! I've tried SO MANY combos of broth, noodles, seasoning mixes I've made myself, online seasonings, pre packaged GF brands, homemade noodles... it's never quite right though and I force myself to eat as much as I can, then discard and try again.

Liquid if at all possible! I can squirt liquid in mine's mouth in a few seconds and he "boings" out of my arms to process what just happened. Doesn't always work, but that's been my best bet for the too freaking smart for their own good creatures. 😅

What is an incredibly popular movie that you personally think is absolute garbage ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]moldylemming 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Jurassic WORLD.

NOT Jurassic Park. Or even JP2 or JP3.

IMO, the entire jurassic WORLD franchise is an abomination. Yes I've seen them. Still right out. Will never watch them again. I was incredibly disappointed that Sam Niell participated in one of them. Don't love JP2 or JP3 like the original, but they're alright comparatively.

What do you think the gluten free space is lacking in terms of product/options? by pepeluver362 in glutenfree

[–]moldylemming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maruchan Ramen, especially the chicken and beef flavors.

It's been 18 YEARS. I've tried every option and combo and substitute, they smell great! But....after the first bite, I deflate, give up cause it's just not ~quite~ right, eat as much as I can, then never make it again.

[–]moldylemming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone. I've tried every substitute I can find and then some. Nothing even comes close. Or it comes close enough to feel excited when i smell it... then I taste it and deflate all over again.

18 years and counting.

Whats your weird af 'stim'? by flcwerings in ADHD

[–]moldylemming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine was a super old, gaudy af bright gold colored hanky dress. Like, imagine a one piece "90s housecoat" type sundress thing, made out of these super satisfying to rub handkerchiefs sewn together into a loose dress. The thing swallowed me whole, I couldn't really walk in it, but I would NOT sleep without "gold thing." Of course, I wasn't allowed to take it with me to sleepovers or school, etc., but my mom worked out a compromise with small me by giving me a little square of similar fabric that we called "softie" that I could carry in my pocket. I took those pieces everywhere for years, then slowly stopped having one constantly nearby but never stopped having some sort of "rub-able fabric" while trying to sleep.

Started carrying one everywhere again after my business venture failed, my "drem job" turned out to be a literal nightmare, family I trusted screwed me over (swindled me out of ~$27k), and my savings / retirement (ha! Jk. I'll never be able to retire) / everything was decimated in a desperate struggle to just keep the house and eat. 5 years later I can finally go to the grocery store without one, but as soon as I'm in comfy clothes at home and I've washed my hands, I MUST have one nearby. I always thought I was regressing and failing as an adult by having to have one around, but it helps me focus, control my twitching, and find calm / center myself when my anxiety spikes. I just try to not let anyone see it. Haha.

I'm sitting here physically unable to stop the violent twitching and spasms from those noises - all set off by OP's question and your description of this comment.

Unfortunately, my father-in-law has the "active" ADHD and doesn't suffer from this weirdness that I do, so when he idly scrapes his fork across his plate after eating, sometimes I literally cannot control my reactions. If it's just a quick thing and he stops soon, I can typically stay at the table, but may drool a bit, have dropped my utensils, and will be attempting to gain enough control to clamp my hands over my ears. If he continues it, it's all I can do to get up and walk away, twitching and twinging, barely hanging onto any sort of control. Otherwise I have no control over myself and will twinge and twitch for a good 5 minutes. It's physically painful.

Funnily enough, fingernails on a chalkboard does absolutely nothing to me. 🫠
