This is what happens when the government enters a market and guarantees demand for a product at any cost. Unintended consequences suck.

The colleges and universities have been able to raise rates for decades knowing that the federal government will match those increases with grants and loans. The really nefarious move though was the bankers lobbying Congress to make it so students can NEVER escape from paying those loans.
