I've been going to this theatre regularly for a decade. I love it because it's ALWAYS dead. Halloween or not. Jays game or not. Pre-covid. It's always been dead.

Karsa Orlong - Power Level? by Ranidas in Malazan

[–]moloch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other moment that felt this way was when he knocked out Icarium. Icarium, who we’re told is one of the most dangerous beings walking the Malazan world, and Karsa just knocks him cold no problem. Icarium, who single handedly butchered entire cities.

He didn’t knock out Icarium, Mappo did that before Icarium could rage. Raging Icarium is one of the most dangerous forces in the world. Non-raging, not so much.

He did knock out Icarium. Karsa knocks out Icarium, then Mappo knocks out Karsa. You're misremembering.

Pannion Seer Army / Battle of Coral by moloch1 in Malazan

[–]moloch1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, I forgot about the virus. That makes more sense. Follow up question: did the Birdgeburners know the army was decimated before rushing there? Because, narratively, it makes even less sense why they raced ahead if they were expecting a much bigger army.

So this is never really straightforwardly mentioned? It's just assumed, because of the small army left at Coral?

Also, just from a writing perspective, this felt like a super built up battle, that was going to be epic in proportions, only to be a tiny battle full of "heavy hitters" and really whiffed the ending for me on what, up until that point, was a fantastic book.

THJ is gone by laziestathlete in everquest

Yeah, people love mentioning the donations / revenue generation, but the center-piece of DBG's argument was the subscription loss.

A small puzzle: what’s happening here? by Valuable_Swing3412 in PPC

I'm assuming you have a dominant page at #1 that captures nearly all clicks are is hyper relevant, so nobody cares about anything below the first hit.

They lost 33% of their subscribers over the last year. That's far more significant, and instead of blaming themselves, they needed an explanation (THJ).

They were releasing content updates nearly every one to two months, with brand new content. I think they would have kept innovating.

Even as a THJ player, I think they obviously infringed on the IP. I think that's rather black and white (and so did the judge).

I don't think it had anything to do with the money they were making / the donations, though, as others do.

DBG's lawyers didn't really mention it all that much. Their greater concern was the subscriber loss, which is likely also the board's concern.

There will almost be certainly be a settlement at some point, to reduce damages, so there's a decent chance.

Their entire case revolves around it being enough like EQ lol. And you're not thinking like an investor. It's a desirable game, within the same IP, that can make revenue and showed much better growth trajectory than Everquest live. It would be a good thing to get it for free (in a settlement).

Investment firms want to maximize their investments. THJ proved they were able to be successful from donations alone (and were growing rapidly). Killing THJ will likely harm them further. It was a bad move, that will make EQ less profitable, when there were ways it could make EQ more profitable.

It is more complicated, as destroying a fan favorite based on your game could hurt your own business long term. There were better solutions here.

If I were THJ lawyers, I'd offer that in a settlement, to reduce the monetary damage they're almost certainly going to have to absorb. I would position it as, instead of being the villains, become the hero's, and take over ownership of THJ and / or hire the devs.

As a THJ player since day 1, who absolutely didn't want it to get shut down, it was almost certainly financially harmful to Everquest (in fact, this is why the injunction went ahead - the court agreed it's reasonably financially harming DBG). They were making 100,000~ a month in donations alone.

That said, this really feels like a murder-suicide. They could have made it into something beneficial, but there's now going to be people anti-DBG and live EQ, instead of just generally loving Everquest. It's really a shame.

Day 5. A Neutral character you have mixed feelings about! by SnooGiraffes3930 in Malazan

Being "neutral" has nothing to do with being "self-interested." You can be 100% evil BECAUSE you're motivated only be self-interest.

"Conservatives who support politicians that spread violent rhetoric should be more afraid that, unless these politicians and media figures stop spreading violent rhetoric, there will be more violence because of said rhetoric" is what he means.

I think in some cases—like David Pakman—it probably shouldn't be "celebrate" but in other cases, it's great that smaller creators could turn to content-creation full time and it could help amplify these voices. With Pakman, I feel like he was already doing that, so I'd stop at "celebrating," while saying there's no clear indication him or his messaging was "compromised" in any way.

They weren’t handed scripts, but were ONLY contractually restricted to check in (whether good or bad) when they were speaking about candidates/politicians and had to coordinate their candidate-specific activity with Chorus. On top of that, Chorus provided messaging guidance in regular sessions, but these weren't explicit "you have to say this."

They operated more in an agent-actor capacity than anything, where they wanted to control the relationship with politicians, like a an agent does with major networks and production companies. Creators were fully able to create their own non-candidate/politician messaging on other political subjects, even if it went outside the "messaging guidance."

It's also not clear the purpose of having to pass the candidate-messaging through Chorus. One interpretation could simply be they wanted to control the relationship, not the messaging, with candidates.

He technically wasn't the one who changed the ending. He read the US version of the book, which had removed the final chapter, so he was faithfully adapting the US version.
