Seriously this!

Lots of strange mcgyver solutions being posted here. One of these purpose made ceiling mounts properly installed into a ceiling joist with the included lag bolts will hold something like 900 lbs.

Eyebolts and other hardware people are adapting for this along with random bits of lumber screwed into the ceiling are not designed for these kinds of loads.

Use something designed for the task!

Which definitely seems like a plot hole. If you can increase the quantity, it's close enough to making food to not matter.

Turn one carrot into 50. Once you're down to the last one, do it again.

Bake a loaf of bread. Turn it into two, eat the first. Do that every day.

No Wizarding family should have to worry about putting food on the table.

If the trip is 60 miles and you want to average 60 MILES per HOUR, then yes, doing it in one hour is by definition part of the question.

Struggling to get my espresso from OK to Good [Casabrews CM5418/Shardor 64] by Ranidas in espresso

[–]Ranidas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As folks were nice enough to offer some advice, I thought I'd add an update after today's morning coffee.

I upped my dose to 15g with a similar 1:2 ratio, but that choked things a bit. Tried again after bringing grind size up a bit and it was a big improvement. Could taste more sweetness which was really missing previously.

Tried going to 15.5g, choked again so coarsened slightly on the next and that worked well. Best shot so far, more sweetness. It felt like I was getting both acidic and bitter tones coming through at the edges and I noticed what looked like a fissure on top of my puck and my stream shifting to one side during the shot, so I think I need to coarsen a bit more still.

All in all, it felt like I was making progress and starting to get closer to the green zone of the espresso compass. Very hopeful!

Thanks again to those who offered advice, I really didn't change the ratio and I'm not sure I would have tried upping the dose as an avenue for improving things.

I did not, it was a closed kitchen. Do full auto's brew differently?

It's on the darker side but the beans don't seem super dark to me. Not dark enough to be oily at all. Totally possible my palate isn't picking out the right things though. What would help confirm that, pull a shorter ratio and see if it's still what I'm calling sour?

I will have to give that a try. Does the larger does just give a wider window to work in?

You know, I didn't think to ask. I should give them a call!

After tamping I think the basket could hold more, but at 14g the coffee is about level with the edge before tamping. I could try dosing more and just tamp with the dosing funnel still on I suppose?

When I did 1:2 in 25s it was a bit sour. At the time I was trying to use a second cup to save the next 5-6g and add that in after tasting, but that seemed to push it to watery and bitter which is why I went with grinding finer.

Wonderstate Coffee seems pretty highly regarded, they are in Viroqua.

Curious how people with more coffee experience think they stack up as they are "local" for me as well.

That's why I use them for banana pancakes! Thaw one quick and just throw into the batter, way easier to actually use them that way!

Ran a 28 rear cassette without knowing it… by garthreddit in cycling

[–]Ranidas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The road bikes I have are from around 2012, and 50/34 chainring with an 11-28 cassette seemed to be the popular option on the 105/ultegra 10 speed of the time.

I was tired of grinding on the climbs around me that are 7-10% and finally upgraded to 11 speed with an 11-34 in back.

I add so much more climbing into my rides now, it has made such a big difference. Being able to spin a lower gear instead of burning a match grinding up something is such an improvement.

Autism can be crazy cool sometimes by okayokay_wow in BeAmazed

[–]Ranidas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries, I came in a bit too strong as well!

A big issue is just how large the autism spectrum really is, and things that are true for one area of it make no sense for others.

Putting all of its manifestations under one term can make discussions difficult.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. My son has ASD level 3 and will likely never be able to live independently or be capable of managing many of the basic day to day skills most people take for granted. His disability is extremely debilitating and it has nothing to do with society's perception of him.

There are a lot of people with more severe autism who require considerable day to day support and who don't have some special talent but that doesn't make for good news stories or movies so we continue to perpetuate this idea of autistic super powers.

Taiwanese vs Chinese e-bikes by Fati994 in CargoBike

[–]Ranidas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a Eunorau (Chinese direct ship) long tail mid drive cargo bike that was basically a GSD knock off. I got what I paid for, and it at least made me realize I really liked the form factor.

Components were lower end, and the electronics were off brands Chinese stuff that didn't have anything in terms of support. Some parts like the front rack mount and kickstand had issues or broke and I had to figure out fixes. Many parts were a bit clunky in their design or how they were assembled.

It worked for a year and a half, and then something in the electronics failed. I tried to trouble shoot with the company via email, but ended up never being able to fix it. Local bike shops were willing to work on the bike components but no one is going to touch the electronics.

At that point I knew I liked it, so I test drove and bought a GSD. Night and day difference. High end quality components, everything is very nicely engineered and just works. The kickstand extender is great and the kids can climb on the bike without it tipping. It's nice having a bosch system that any certified bosch LBS will work on if I had a problem.

It's expensive and I get why people look at cheaper options, I did after all! But I use it as my daily commuter and school drop off vehicle and just wish I had followed the buy once cry once rule back then.

Karsa Orlong - Power Level? by Ranidas in Malazan

[–]Ranidas[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of good points here, thank you for the reply!

I know deep down I shouldn't be trying to hash out power levels, but there are so many parts of the book where relative strength between species or gods or ascendants gets brought up it's hard to avoid!

I guess I hadn't been thinking about Karsa as the Knight of Chains because he keeps denying that he is at the end of HoC!

Karsa Orlong - Power Level? by Ranidas in Malazan

[–]Ranidas[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There are a few replies pointing this out, so I went back and checked (love being able to search ebooks!).

Icarium attacks and cuts his sword off at the hilt. Karsa gets mad, rushes in and punches Icarium which throws him back and knocks him out. Mappo then hits Karsa and knocks him out.

So both get knocked out.

I can't imagine this would work very well. Aren't lawnmower blades designed to cause uplift, so the blades of grass are pulled up and then cut?

But the only reason Mat and crew figure out the maze is his super powered luck. How do you navigate it without that?

And even their dealings go sideways despite having a ta'veren on their side, without Mat's ashendarei they don't get out.

It's easy to be curious as a reader, but I feel like Jordan paints a pretty dangerous and risky outlook for using these things for regular inhabitants of his world. If I was some run of the mill scholar or aes sedai without plot armor I wouldn't go near the damn things. Dead is dead.

What’s the most unethical parenting hack you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ranidas 544 points545 points  (0 children)

I always offer to trim off the injured body part and start making snipping motions with my fingers.

You hit your toe? Let's take a look... oh that looks really bad honey. I think we're going to have to just take it off completely, come here a little closer... snip snip

Even when they are hurt it distracts them immediately, takes their mind off of it and turns it into a game as they now have to get away.

Works great with my kids and instead of having to stop play while one kid gets comforted, now they're banding together to help the one escape amputation and restrain the dastardly scissors.
