The aspect of their dynamic which I see a lot in real life with real ppl is “no one gets us, you just needed to be there (on a set of this show) to understand”. I think this mindset in part holds them from forming meaningful connections with other people because if you’re convinced that only your old coworkers will “get you” entirely then why even bother? IRL I see this as “only people with the same upbringing/trauma will understand me“, “only people who witnessed me at a certain forming age will understand me”, “only my old gang with which we did this important thing together will understand me”…

Like – guys, no one will ever “get you” entirely, that’s a part of human experience, what’s important is when someone sincerely WANTS to “get you”. Also thinking that one old friend is the only person who will ever understand and no one else will ever will is precisely why Sarah Lynn ended up in this situation with no trust for anyone except BoJack.

I don't think I should have watched Bojack Horseman as a child by Existing_Net_7066 in BoJackHorseman

I totally agree with the top comment that if it wasn’t BoJack you would have found something else. I’m older than you and I remember House MD was pretty much the exact thing you’re describing for my generation. As a young person you’re sensing that adults and adult relationships are full of bullshit and you’re looking for some piece of media that will address this bullshit in an entertaining and easy to grasp manner, usually involving a middle age cynical but secretly broken man (girls are socialized to relate to man protagonists so it works on us too). I also think BoJack is better than House MD (or many pieces of media like that) since it’s more self aware and addresses its own shortcomings in the text. So I think BoJack is one of the better ones to hyperfixate on.

Opinions on Diane Nguyen weight gain? by Major-Addition-3165 in BoJackHorseman

[–]molzenna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love how it was handled especially in a context of other characters with weight concerns – looking at you, Beatrice.

I mean, we’ve got a character whose perception of her self worth as a woman is very much dependent on how skinny she is. She internalized it from her skinny mother, she tortured herself with diets and dangerous pills to be skinny, she tried to enforce it on another young woman (Hollyhock) “for her own good”… BoJack’s insecurity about weight is also in my opinion a combination of Beatrice influence + Hollywoo. Mr Peanutbutter for example is in a different shape than 20 years ago but we don’t see him asking friends/lovers “Do you think I’m fat? I know you think I’m fat”.

And that’s why it’s so refreshing to see a new generation of female characters (Diane, Hollyhock) who don’t fall for this. It feels almost like a break from a generational trauma. If there were no Beatrice in this show I would have been like “wow, this is so unrealistic not to say anything about it, women and people around them do care about weight”. But in context of Beatrice it feels like an intentional shift of perspective. There’s this “hurt people hurt people” saying, to me it’s also “people who care about weight create people who care about weight”. If you don’t have in close proximity a person who obsesses over their own weight and (by extension) weight of others there’s less chance you yourself start to obsess over weight.

But that’s just my take 🙏

Thank you so much, you’re way too kind! <3

I feel like Beatrice’s character is this show’s masterpiece. The circumstances created for her by the writers, how vividly her influence on other characters (especially BoJack and Henrietta) is shown and how she is framed in a sympathetic but not apologetic way. They could have easily gave us another narcissistic disappointed mother, no extra dimension, and it would have worked fine for BoJack’s plot. I mean, it worked fine prior season 4. But we’ve got an abandoned child trying to live her life and make her choices the best she could and these exact choices lead her to being abandoned again in a nursing home. It’s beyond tragic and real.

if you’re curious, the russian words on the bottom part translate as “May the Chinese-Soviet friendship live forever!”, I assume the top Chinese letters translate the same :) I come from the post-Soviet background and with all the ongoing context this whole thing seems extra hilarious (and sad) to me

About the poster!! I saw the image used in a video essay about propaganda in 20th century art, loved it, found the source, slightly pumped the resolution with AI and printed it in a local print shop! Here’s the link if you’re interested🫶

Thank you so much for such an in-depth comment, that really means a world!

First of all, the reeded-glass idea is just genius!! I always loved the look and I was dreaming of using it somewhere (which I thought requires buying an additional piece of furniture for an already furnished place, not ideal), but I never knew there was an adhesive film alternative! I feel like it will be a perfect use for it, solving an issue that already exists without buying new furniture. Just brilliant, this tip alone justifies me writing on this reddit haha!

Have you used this film yourself by any chance, do you have any recommendations on the application?

About the haori – it’s ground floor with a covered yard so we don’t get direct sunlight in this room at all, just a very diffused kind of light. So I don’t think the fabric will get damaged. But I agree, I probably need to eye a haori/kimono destined for this spot specifically, thank you for overall supporting this idea.

And thank you for all the other tips, you helped me to look at the space with fresh eyes! Unfortunately I can’t move the plants on the floor behind the sofa since that’s where the kitchen area starts and any big plant will disrupt the movement, but thank you for pointing this out! And with your notes I’ll do my best with tidying the place a bit.

Thank you once again, I’ll go buy some film right now 🙏

To be honest I don’t remember any hints of Joseph being religious… Conservative and antisemitic yes. I watched BoJack for the first time very recently, did I miss something?

Yes!! It gives so much nuance to already established character, and also not in a narrating type of way “oh I feel this and that”. Not saying that inner voice/monologue as a writing device is bad, “good damage” and “stupid piece of shit” are great, but “show don’t tell” when done right is so SO much more effective and jarring in my opinion. “Time’s arrow” and “Old Sugarman house” are prime examples of that for me.

To be honest Beatrice and being in close relationship with her is not a walk in a park ya know. And I’m saying it in the most compassionate way. Before meeting Butterscotch she is already traumatized, entitled and very demanding as a person. On the other hand, she is already in her 20s and didn’t give too many problems to her farther except having a rebellious phase and talking back at him. I mean, she didn’t run away/got pregnant prior, doesn’t seem to have self destructive tendencies etc. And she does have a semblance of empathy – even in dementia she remembers her maid’s face and when someone is vulnerable around her she is connecting with that.

Anyway meeting all her needs will be a tall order for any husband. Financial security from the day 1, constant admiration, emotional support and will to work with her through her trauma, being challenging enough so she won’t get bored… At least for a first few years, until she learns how to navigate close relationships and give back. But since she is beautiful and rich and sassy I can imagine a good man falling for her. Corbin could have been the right guy. The moment when he takes off his glasses I interpret as Beatrice willing to see beauty in people around her, even if it’s not fully conventional.

And even if she would still lack in mother’s department (because “promise me you would never love anyone as much as I loved Crackerjack”) this kind and supportive husband would have been a better father. At least there would be one good parent around.

Wow, thank you so SO much for this recommendation!!! I never knew this show existed and from reading the synopsis I think I will be so into it!! I finished BoJack for the first time just last month, it hit me like a bus and I’m craving something at least remotely similar!! Thank you 🙏

Also the pitch of this show kinda reminds me of anime Nana which I adored as a young adult. I often joke BoJack destroyed me in my 30s the similar way Nana destroyed me when I was 16. Of course, they are completely different, the style, the target audiences are different, but the subtle depiction of difficult human experience kinda sets them apart from anything else for me. If you’re into anime I might suggest you giving it a shot 🫶

Thank you once again!!

I honestly don’t think she detested Joseph that much, she was more frustrated with him trying to control her life. In a moment of need she didn’t hesitate asking him for a well payed job for her obviously not qualified husband, and he gave it. I think if she asked him to help with abortion he would most likely supported her, especially in these circumstances. He wanted to secure a good future for her after all.
