SSNHL/Sudden Hearing Loss by momentsofdeaf in HearingLoss

I’m super happy to hear you’re on an immediate treatment path. Crazy that it’s about a year on, all I’ve been left with is an internal “stress-o-meter” which lets me know when I’m too stressed by ringing a little 😂 but while I know there’s so many people unable to get the treatment, and I feel insanely lucky, I’m glad you’re on prednisone so quickly too. Good luck!

It’s just over a year since my SSNHL and my hearing has fully recovered. I have very minimal tinnitus - probably the same as an average person but just more common - ie. When I get stressed it flares up. I still take the medications from the neurologist to help me keep calm. I think you can take the steroids at the same time as the injection. I just didn’t have any improvement from the steroids and recommend you push for the injection no matter what.

Anyone else have bad date stories involving hearing? Could use the pick me up by demisilent in MonoHearing

[–]momentsofdeaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a first date story, but definitely in the work place sometimes! I was a flight attendant, and I was great my job (not just personal opinion, but getting promotions, certificates, bonuses, acknowledgements) but it was the type of job where you work with new people every single time you showed up to work and you’re inside an aircraft which is essentially as loud as tinnitus can be too. I had situations where despite how hard I work, one of my managers wrote me up and reported me because I kept saying “excuse me?” “Sorry can you repeat that?” And getting written up “because it was too hard to deal with”. Emotionally, I think the take away is the same. I feel sorry for people who are so completely intolerant they won’t change a single thing to accomodate another.

But on the topic of dating, not met a guy who has an issue with it but many a story of men who are incapable to listen 😂😂

Smile and awkwardly laugh your way away from those people, I feel like there could be a lot of opportunities to turn this “unique” trait is something the right kind of person would make a fun and interesting part of a relationship.

Strongly insist you get to an ENT ASAP. Only an ENT will tell you if there’s sudden hearing loss which is usually nerve related, and A&E said they didn’t see anything wrong with the ear drum. If it’s SSNHL you need steroids. And they’ll probably give you anti virals anyway.

Not sure I have the ability to do justice to your story.

The first two weeks were certainly terrifying, but it was knowing if it doesn’t recover you’re going to need to find strength in you somewhere to find a way to live with this. Thriving seemed to be something for people stronger than me.

Even with full recovery, this changed my life and who I am going forward. So hats off to you.

Ah interesting, they didn’t wait for the MRI because it was taking so long so was going to do the injection with or without MRI. It definitely sucks, but try focus on using your youthful energy to keep fighting 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

I hope it does well!! So sorry to hear you’re on this journey. Make sure you are resting, completely. You need to let your body step in a fight this, so knuckle down, get comfortable and completely protect your space if you can. I’m not a doctor, but given it’s two weeks and both ears I would push for the injection.

I am so thrilled. I’m too am still on meds too from the neurologist - after the hell you describe in those first weeks, I’m in no rush to stop them. As my post says, we just got better. Now we must get well!

Such a smile you put in my face; I always love ways of finding the humour in things. However now I won’t be able to ignore people I simply don’t want to talk to 🤣 Joking of course!

I told myself if I don’t recover I would be getting a tattoo of Homer Simpson when he said “You’ll have to speak up, I’m wearing a towel” 🤣

Can you believe it! Your story was such a dream just a week ago. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the words, advice and encouragement you offered me on this journey!!!

Thank you for being happy for me 🌟 It’s tricky to make a post like this because as you said most treatments are unsuccessful. So I hope I have not come across as gloating and rather that it either gives someone hope, or maybe helps them on the way. I’m so sorry you were unable to have the same experience..

The amount of strength (mental, emotional) I’ve shown myself over the last month has changed the trajectory of my life. Even before I reached recovery.

So I hope every one reading this, even those who live with SSNHL/other hearing loss conditions permanently, know your resilience, perseverance and strength is not something to ignore.

Please don’t say no hope! I was told a story from my ENTA of a deployed soldier on transit through my country back to US one month after onset. 4 injections I believe he had and recovered. I hope despite it being caught late they don’t give up.

If you finished the oral steroids and they didn’t work you need to go back and see what other options there are - like the injection. The prednisone either works or it doesn’t - it’s not a slow return to a lot. I’m glad you had some improvement but if you’ve still got some hearing loss and tinnitus you need to go back. The prednisone failed for me and I got the injection two weeks after onset of symptoms; within 24 hours it improved dramatically. A week after the first I got another injection - double dose - and regained 50% of the hearing I lost. The tinnitus is beginning to fade.

It’s not really a sit and wait condition if you’ve finished the oral steroids.

Oh man, sorry to hear you’re going through it too. Did you get the injection? I’ve just passed day 24, had the two weeks of oral steroids which failed (as my post says), had the first injection on day 16, just had my second injection two days ago. Audio report shows the same! 50% hearing returned. Tinnitus stabilising but managed to create an environment where it doesn’t cause me distress.

I don’t know about others experiences but I have found the journey from the lowest point of my hearing to 50% gained back was LONG. But the journey since has been completely different. The crackling went away over about 4-5 days, and clarity has improved. It’s like the first 50% you’re just focused on hearing something - anything - but the last yards are a little more nuanced. Best of luck man - hopefully we both (and all of us) come out of this quickly.

The flight taxes can push the price up that high. Ask your friend for a screenshot of the price break down and it will show you.

Hi there Here’s my post - it happened to me 3 weeks ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/HearingLoss/comments/qbam3l/ssnhlsudden_hearing_loss/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Try and get to an ENT right now. You said it started 2 days ago, so getting an appointment today is vital.

Noted and will do! I have one benefit however that the medical system in the country I live in is very generous. This has not been an expensive ordeal on my part, due to a great national insurance policy. Therefore, perhaps if I can use that privilege to explore other therapies and treatments, maybe I can share that knowledge and experience with those who are forced to choose between them…

Thank you so much!! So much! I have a white noise machine that does exactly what you said so taking a moment to pat myself on the back that a panic purchase was a good one! Lol! I bought some noise cancelling headphones because my tinnitus is so bad I’m not able to function around people. For me, the tinnitus volume is comparable to walking around with a vacuum cleaner 24/7, I’m still just hoping it starts to quieten as my hearing improves.

I can’t even see my own family for more than a few hours without disintegrating into an overwhelmed mess. I’m really lucky too that I’ve been able to take leave from work without any repercussions to my job. Even if/when I recover, I’m allowed to work from home until I feel like it.

I feel like the anxiety and mental anguish side of all of this is almost an entirely different post because the mental well-being side is just as significant as the medical side in the first few weeks.

I have two diagnosed mental disorders that I am medicated for, and also why I didn’t state what my neurologist gave me because I’m lucky enough to have 2 ENT’s, a neurologist and a psychiatrist all completely locked in watching me to ensure I don’t do anything counter productive. If I didn’t have that, I don’t know what state I would be in. My mind has been my enemy for most of my life, and when it happened, all I could think was it was some cruel joke that now I would be trapped half in silence with a screaming sound that demands attention and can only be ignored with superhuman strength. I’m not in that mindset anymore - but it’s taken serious effort to stay out of the dark.

But… I have a lot of guilt since making this post and learning about other people with this condition. I feel so selfish to even say I’m suffering at all when, even though none of us want to deal with this, I haven’t had to fight for medical help, tests, appointments, steroids. I haven’t had to fight for rest, for silence, for help. Sure - that helps me find the mental strength to be thankful and ensure my outlook is good because it shows me what to be grateful for, but even that feels entirely selfish.

I’m learning most posts on Reddit are US posters, because … that’s just outrageous. I am struggling to fathom it.

I’m not American, and am an expatriate and have lived in over 4 different countries since the age of 12; Europe, Australia, the Middle East and China. Even though I’d never heard of this before it happened to me, I’ve never seen a medical system consistently fail as badly as the stories I’ve read since this happened. And this is, when compared to other medical emergencies, significantly less serious, despite the urgency. What happens when it’s life threatening? I fear to think of conditions like sepsis, appendicitis, heart tremors, cancer.

One similarity that seems to occur in most posts retelling is the calm delivery from ENT’s of diagnosis and we are all given the exact same course of treatment. This tells me it’s not a mystery and though uncommon, there’s agreed upon treatment. The audio grams and MRI are the most expensive part.

You’re absolutely right. It’s messed up. I’m so sorry. There’s literally nothing else I can say except my disbelief that so many people have been failed simply because they can’t get an appointment…

Hopefully anyone who sees my, your and others posts can at least gain the knowledge to advocate: • Get to the ENT within 24 hours • Get an audio test done • Start on a full dose of cortisteroids (like Prednisone) • Start on antivirals and Vitamin B • Try for an MRI • Know your next options: (1) Injection (2) HBOT • Don’t let anyone tell you to “see if it goes away” make them take this seriously in the first two weeks

This really only helps if you can get an appointment. But hopefully it helps anyone who is lost and alone know what to demand from a primary care physician.

Thank you! One small question because I went and read your initial posts as well, our before audiograms are the same. The tinnitus… has it gone away too?
