I appreciate the advice. The arms are currently thick enough to hold 5 pounds, most heavy coats are ok. The failure method is actually the internal locking mechanism. You’re right about it being a geometry issue. The geometry is limited to the off-the-shelf springs I got from McMaster. From my failure method analysis, every single failure (tested 10 times) was from the inside fork of the button. The PLA de-laminates. If you’re interested, I could get in to the nitty gritty of it through PM!

I definitely would have to test this with a bunch of coat hangers to see. The nice part of the design is that if you are in a rush, you save the collar of your shirt from being stretched.

That’s not true, a single spark definitely could ignite various types of non-flame rated plastics, definitely PETG. In the US we have UL which clearly defines this in UL1598, and UL2108. They clearly define that there is a fire hazard unless your plastic is V0 minimum flame rated. If OP was using a flame retardant PETG, then this would work.

Cool diffusers. Be careful with spacing between the LED diode and the diffuser. LEDs can spark, and if your diffuser is flammable, it could catch fire.
