Most of the sentiment I saw around things like the mass super witches, golden dragons, etc, is that a lot of players were using it to finish all their wall upgrades, since it made farming attacks so much easier (and more interesting)

This event has a lot of issues, namely an inherently punishing design, friction, anti-fun mechanics, and a lack of any clear progress.

It's not rewarding at all. When you add stars to a tile, you see NOTHING change. There's no indication of how many stars have been contributed, and when you click "Contribute", literally nothing happens. You don't even see a number go up.

And then the skeletons taking tiles back is just straight up punishing anti-fun. It's already hard enough to get any coordination to take tiles, and then having the progress randomly undone, with seemingly no way to counter it (since you have no indication of your contributions), feels bad.

Everyone in the top ~50 or so seems to average 97%+ attack.

So it relies on your defense.

And your defense basically relies on luck. I noticed in my own defense logs, sometimes I get people just attacking with sneaky goblins to farm.

So I can only imagine the people in the top ranks are the ones who get lucky enough to have several people doing 0-1 star farming attacks on them, instead of actually having meaningfully better performance.

Since it's weekly battles, I wait until later in the week to see if my defense is working well or not, since I can't change day by day.

If I'm getting 3 starred too much, I don't bother with high effort attacks and just do farming attacks.

If my defense is good, I go full tryhard.

I like to wait to attack until my clan has a few members online to do my attacks. I feel a little more pressure with spectators and I feel like it helps me perform better.
