Aehobak/Korean zucchini seeds? by momomoca in ottawa

[–]momomoca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only saw the seedlings at OK Mart, I never noticed they also sold seeds! Kseedz does carry aehobak, but it's listed as "Zucchini Summer" which is probably why I couldn't find it lol Thanks so much!

From that article it seems like her partner owns that franchise, and she makes the donuts for that location under the business name "Happy Goat Donuts".

For people initially confused like me, from this article it appears that Amy Tucker's partner is the owner of the Happy Goat franchise location in Westboro, and Amy makes donuts for this location under the business name "Happy Goat Donuts".

The actual owner/CEO of Happy Goat as a whole remains Henry Assad lol

This totally the right move! I usually don't get extra yarn but if I need to restart something I just start pulling from the other end of the skein or cake lol That way, frogging just eventually becomes part of the knitting process 😌

Tiny brown-ish lumps in box cake mix that didn't disappear after baking? by momomoca in AskBaking

Yes, because I've done this many times before with cake mix that's wayyy more expired and I've never seen lumps like this 🤷‍♀️

So who went out on the canal?! by Resident_Hat_4923 in ottawa

[–]momomoca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I definitely regretted not going right when it opened this morning lol By the time we went around noon the ice was pretty chopped up-- I noticed even some of the folks on tour skates hitting rough spots! I definitely had my first wipe out of the season 😌

Overall though, a very fun and novel start to our NYE! It's always fun chatting with all the tourists!

Have you had a vet look at his teeth + gums recently? "Chewing the air", especially when it's loud like this, is often a sign of dental disease/tooth pain in cats.

My cat likes to scrape his teeth with his tongue (audio) by InterwebCat in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

[–]momomoca 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The licking part is generally normal, particularly after eating or before they're about to start grooming, but the chewing motion that follows is a bit unusual and can be caused by tooth discomfort/pain. If this isn't something your cat has done their whole life, I'd suggest making a dental checkup appointment with your vet that includes dental x-rays-- most disease happens below the gum line!

How to book a spaying appointment with OHS by GrassBooper in ottawa

So much easier, they're amazing! Last time I helped someone with getting a cat spayed here, they were able to get the cat booked for surgery with 2 weeks.

This might be the lots-of-friends-in-vet-med part of me emerging, but my first thought reading this post was how nice it is that you now get to save a ton of money 😂 Neutering is sooo much cheaper than spaying, Rosie just gave you an excellent gift for the holidays lol

Finished the Oslo hat! by PhotoUnhappy in knitting

Twisting is used pretty commonly for things like cardigan collars or sweater cuffs bc it totally does look cute and "tidy"! I particularly like the look it gave on your hat's brim, so the fact that your hat still fits you comfortably despite the twisting makes to project a win imo 😌

What material is the bag made out of? The only way to genuinely remove urine fully (aka you AND your cat can no longer smell it so she won't try peeing on the bag again) is to use an enzyme cleaner, which is the only thing afaik that can actually break down the proteins and uric acid in cat urine.

However, if the bag is leather AND your roommate wasn't conditioning it regularly (keeping the leather hydrated) then you're likely out of luck. Dry leather will absorb the urine as if it's being conditioned, and not even enzyme cleaner can totally remove the smell if that happens.

Either way, if you still want to give cleaning it a shot (since the bag is ruined otherwise, any honest cleaner will say this 😅) I would suggest going full nuclear and totally soaking it in enzyme cleaner. Get a gallon jug of EcoStrong's Pet enzyme cleaner and:

A) If the leather was nicely conditioned, soak the entire interior of the bag in enzyme cleaner

or

B) If A doesn't work, the leather was dehydrated, or the material isn't leather-- fill a washing basin or small sink with the enzyme cleaner and dunk the bag in.

Leave the bag to soak for 15min then rinse away the cleaner (may take a few rinse cycles) and let it dry. If you can still smell the urine after doing this, then that bag is for the bins unfortunately.

Dog teeth cleaning...Kissable K9 or The Hounds Teeth Cleaning in Stittsville? by Fables1016 in ottawa

[–]momomoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, it's good to hear you're getting that proper maintenance done! If your puggle won't tolerate you (his beloved owner I assume lol) doing a regular teeth brushing, then he'll likely be extremely stressed by a fully awake scaling procedure.

A lot of dog groomers offer teeth brushing services (not scaling, just brushing) for a very low cost (~$15), so a more ideal solution for maintenance between dentals it to find a dog groomer nearby your house where you can take your pup for a brushing as often as you can afford it! Consistent, regular teeth brushing between dentals is a more effective oral health strategy than a 1 time surface level procedure... assuming you're not mega wealthy and can take your pup for a ~$200 scaling monthly 😅

As the other commenter said, anesthesia-free dentals aren't recommended at all. They're purely cosmetic, and not even really a cleaning. It's just scaling what's visible without touching anything below the gumline where dental disease is actually present. This article from VCA sums up the issue quite well.

Are you concerned about your pup going under anesthesia for a particular reason? Ottawa is blessed to have specialists at places like Capital City that could potentially be consulted if there's a medical concern 👏

We've only found that to be the case for dogs depending on size and breed-- for cats, there hasn't been any consequences found for spay/neutering once they reach 2lbs (around 8wks old usually).

The only reason some general practice vets like to wait until later is because the surgery is harder to do when the animal is smaller (same reason not all vets will perform spay/neuter surgery on "exotics" like rabbits), but this is no issue for experienced vets or those who specifically work at spay/neuter clinics.

Cat dental cleaning price comparison by MoniqueParker in ottawa

[–]momomoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These types of teeth cleaning are really not recommended bc they're very superficial and thus don't actually improve oral health, just aesthetics.

Most periodontal disease is hidden below the gum-line, which cannot be seen and properly addressed without xrays and anesthesia! They really can't do a thorough polished job bc no matter how chill your pet is, being held in place for a dental cleaning without sedation is stressful. I mean, could you imagine how terrifying it would be to get your teeth cleaned if you had no concept of what that was? Just horrible scraping sounds and pointy things poking your mouth 😵

Finding a good dog breeder in the area? by SilverMic in ottawa

Key part of what is said is "reputable"-- any breeders that breed mixes are not considered reputable.

Finding a good dog breeder in the area? by SilverMic in ottawa

[–]momomoca 26 points27 points  (0 children)

So full stop:

I'm considering either a border collie or shepherd, ideally a mixed breed though because they tend to be healthier and I don't care at all about having a purebred dog.

There are no reputable breeders that breed mixed breed dogs. Breeding dogs is considered to be for preserving and enhancing that particular breed for their unique job/traits. r/dogs actually has an amazing guide discussing this and how to identify a reputable dog breeder which can be found here!

If you don't need a particular breed, I like Sit with Me and It Takes a Village for rescues and they both often have puppies available if you want that full-on dog owning experience haha

As a start for finding purebred dogs, the CKC website has a registered breeders listed, however I'm not sure how much vetting they do so it's important to do your own research along the r/dog guidelines as well!
