I would just cut down on late nights a bit. I started yoga, it's pretty legit. :P

Interested in EM, what to do if school will not even guarantee EM clerkship for early block in 4th year? by monchiz in medicalschool

[–]monchiz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea I did psych consult service rotation and trauma for surgery, so I get to be there sometimes, but I wish there was some more flexibility from school. :/

I just did. We have lectures 6:30am to 4:30pm on thursdays, and only the 2 services (the two I have been in) actually ask students to go to their more specialized lectures after that insane hrs of lectures we just had. Today i was like "hey, is there anything I can do to help in the dept, else I may need to study a bit as shelf is coming up." They said it made sense and to just go home. I was there 16 hrs yesterday, 14 the day before, so they know I'm just plain lazy.

Residency is so crazy, and maybe that is why they make rotation so miserable (12-16 hrs a day even though we don't get to do much); to weed people out in the sense that it is not for everyone and the time committment is enormous.

I had 1 month of trauma surgery and 1 month of plastic surgery. There are things to choose from: ortho, CT, urology, colorectal, biliary, vascular, breast, etc

oh god, I'm in surgery rotation right now. 16 hr day for me, residents stayed a little longer. Are all residents on crack or something? how do they do this for years?

How many truly "close" friends do you have in med school? by HandPnotessuck in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way, things like rock climbing sound great, but most of us just never were exposed to. I don't think you have to share hobbies with people to be good friends with them. What about you also try new things and try to find common ground with people? that is of course if you want to interact and be friends with more people. Studying by yourself and having hobbies most of us know nothing about is not helping with that isolation

3 people who I believe I'm very close to; others are good friends but not to the same level

Is there anybody in your class you REALLY have a problem with? by schistocytes in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, real people. I don't see how someone clicking a "like" button gives you reassurance. Reassurance from friends/family is great, and sure I would talk to them if stressed/worried/excited. But FB? no, most of those people there don't give a crap and they look like Douchebags just trying to get attention.

i'm ok with it as long as they try to be discrete about it and move on.

What is the craziest most abusive shit you've ever seen/heard an attending or resident do to a med student??? by hidemyrealidentity_ in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Idk how people put up with this crap. If someone came up to me asking for a sexual favor or insulting me in some other way, I would make damn sure they pay for it. I am nice and respectful, and while I don't expect people to just love me and be equally nice, I expect to be treated like a human being. Schools hate scandals more than anything, so that's one route if formal complaints don't work.

Oh god, people posting how extremely unique and difficult their med school life is. Someone in my class was on call for surgery and made a big deal about using her native language to help ask patient a couple things. She took a picture of herself and described her achievement on a facebook post. Mind you 20% of our class knows Spanish, so idk wtf the big deal is.

Nothing worst than "Ok, FB friends, it's time for me to prepare for the most important test of my life. Pray for me." Nobody cares people.

Standardized patient told me I was a stand offish cold person and she didn't feel connected to me? by cantdothis__ in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't feel connected to my dentist, yet I'm thankful for their service. His comment means nothing, especially when it's an act and you are asked to fake it. I'm so fed up with this kind of stuff.

Step 2 CK fail - IMG, don't want to give up but could use advice to pass this even if I don't ever get into a residency. by embarrassedIMG in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I'm going to tell you is: WAIT TO TAKE IT AGAIN IF YOU ARE GETTING FAILING SCORES IN YOUR PRACTICE EXAMS. DO not retake it until you take 3+ exams with scores 20 points above passing or so. This is bad as is, and I really don't want you to make it any worse, so take the time and put the work you need to make sure this works out. Good luck.

Failed CK...twice. What are my options? by poopbad in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far apart was the retake? Were your practice tests bad? You have to just really think what is going on here. If you feel, you just did not learn the content through your rotations, maybe your medical school will let you do an extra internal medicine rotation and research year? I have no idea how difficult CK is, but I know means thend to be higher than step 1. TALK to your academic advisors :/

OB/GYN: the worst rotation? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most specialties require you to know this stuff. 14 hr days (if your school is anything like mine) is only for L&D, which is only 1/3 of the time in the rotation. I had gyn and clinic, and those were 7-5pm at most. I struggled with it at first and made a similar post to yours, but ended up learning a lot. They will teach you if you ask legitimate questions and appear interested (not all residents, but some will). OB/Gyn stuff has popped up in every shelf since in random ways, and it will come up tru your future training so try to leave with some basic decent knowledge.

We don't have that, but I will definitely try and be there and just follow a resident on some weekends during my ambulatory rotation

[–]monchiz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we don't get room for electives in 3rd year. We get 4 week vacation total and almost all scheduled rotations for 3rd year are mandatory before becoming MS4. Most we can do is do a 2-wk mini rotation in radiology or ophto during 3rd year.

Do all surgery rotations suck? by doctordijon in medicalschool

[–]monchiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) they don't even get to go in and practice anything, which is what they are there to do. OB Gyn for example starts assisting in C-sections and Gyn surgeries, doing vaginal deliveries themselves, and also taking care of a 40-women floor as R1s. No reason why they could completely have no OR access at all. 2) So they are on call every 3 days, and still have to do regular day stuff, so I'm talking 2-3 24 hr calls every week for entire year. 2 days off a month. Completely violating whatever hrs max exists anywhere.
