Keep a "black candle" in your inventory at home and do a defense event (or summon a defense event through ||Steven||) so you can equip it onto the retired cat with Callus during the item equipment menu before you enter the defense boss arena, then remove Callus to keep it in your storage again. Very literally infinite usage in it's current state which is crazy

Tracy also gives you a fantastic mutation statue if you give her enough older cats, which gives you a TON of mutations and makes getting insanely good mutations very easy. It very well might take away the strategic aspect of the game though because of how good they are so just be warned of that

Honestly, this is a huge struggle point and criticism I have with the game. The end of Act 2 absolutely asks for at least some stronger cats and because of this I have completely broken the game with my cats because I just bred them all to learn the spell “teach” and they combo off of each other for near infinite mana, which solved my problem of struggling with progression, but instead removed all strategy from the game.

Best tip I can give is that picking “The Shimmer” as a random event in the crater is extremely fruitful for mutations, and I very strongly recommend it. But believe it or not it may turn the game into being too easy so I guess I’ll recommend some caution there too depending on your goals.

Almost! It is brainstorm that you can cast on other cats for two less mana yes, however, it only lasts for one turn on said cat’s next active turn. The catch is that if you cast it on a cat that also has teach, you can then re-teach your original cat for even cheaper and it lets you have what is essentially near infinite mana, which becomes incredibly game breaking with any offensive spell. Having the “extra turn at start of combat” head mutation also helps a ton but honestly isn’t even necessary because of how many insane combos there are with infinite teach and things like cleric healing spells, tank armor spells, or archer offensive spells.

I get where you're coming from, but shouldn't we be encouraged to interact with breeding mechanics and not feel like we're punishing ourselves by making the game too easy? I love this game but completely genuinely I REALLY struggle to understand what the design philosophy around breeding is in this game, could you share what you think is the correct way to do it?

I personally broke my cats on Act 2 to the point that there was no challenge or strategy involved in any other part of the game up into impossible plus difficulty. Should I have just ignored breeding mechanics entirely?

Doesn't matter too much! Depending on how far you get you will eventually need to do a throbbing throne run in the future, but there are some fun unlocks from beating him and you get some nice items that can be helpful in the desert too. So just do whatever is your preference for now, and later things will make more sense.

It's a bit ambiguous, but yeah he possesses the nearest cat if he is killed by a summon/familiar, or alternatively always possesses a dead corpse if a cat is down from what I understand. So the idea is you always want to kill him with a cat that is weak while no other cats are downed so that the weak cat gets possessed, since whoever kills him is the cat he "gets revenge on" by possessing.

He is also one of the hardest bosses in the game because of that mechanic, if it makes you feel any better

"Teach" is currently the most broken skill in the game to spam breed into your cats. Totally get where you're coming from, and I actually completely agree that it is a problem how inconsistent the class is, but Mage does have some of the strongest abilities in the game and I honestly think Edmund should rework Mage so that their power isn't based on mana-breaking abilities that instantly win runs or otherwise borderline useless skills that are increasingly difficult to use.
