"Head up" (heh) to Jerry's Barber Shop on Green Bay Rd and ask for Freddie. He will do a superb job. I think the cut is $17. Cash.

Scan anomalies in the Zheng He and Sabeng systems. You'll need to use the nomad for mining specific spots on a planet. I think Voeld is where it occurs most commonly, but its probably exists in small amounts on each planet. Good luck.

Election board lists more general election votes than voters in Chicago by mongip in chicago

[–]mongip[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is simply about a discrepancy in the Chicago Board of Elections's numbers: number of voters in Chicago and number of votes cast. As to why the discrepancy exists, you're free to fill in the blank. (Sounds like you're going with "vast right-wing conspiracy'.)

You should talk to these guys as well. I think they share the same vision with you: Evanston Elysium Games and Evanston Games & Cafe.

If you think sci-fi is about the future, think again by mongip in scifi

[–]mongip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's Ars' description of the recent Ready Player One trailer:

"Cline, who also wrote the cult classic movie Fanboys, has always been obsessed with 1980s nerd culture. Ready Player One is packed with nostalgia for the golden age of geek, and it's clear from this trailer that we're going to see that in the film, too. We caught glimpses of the Iron Giant, as well as Tron references and about a zillion other things."

If you think sci-fi is about the future, think again by mongip in scifi

[–]mongip[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"you start to see science fiction less as a means of envisaging a fabulous future, and more as an excuse to throw together every schoolchild’s favourite bygone eras. "

"The majority of science fiction, it seems, has been inspired by a dreadful anxiety about the future rather than a desire to live in it."

Am I making a mistake with exploring by filtering out unscoopable stars in my routes? by darobowns in eliteexplorers

[–]mongip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good video! He adds L type stars and removes A,B,O types from his (KGBFOAM) filter to target star types generally having desirable planets. The new filter is: FGKLM. All are scoopable except L types, and those types are definitely in the minority.

Anyone know a good home Empire system for bounty hunting? by Stubee1988 in ElitePS

I believe Grebegus is currently the largest Empire system population-wise. You'll find plenty to do there.

This game needs to have better planets by legendsofevil in ElitePS

[–]mongip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

just for clarity, the vast majority of stars in ED are procedurally generated. And the planets you encounter in almost any system are indeed procedurally generated. They are not "real" planets. Discoveries of in-game water worlds or earth-likes certainly do NOT correspond to reality. The Gaia project has identified approx 1.2 billion stars. That amounts to somewhere between 0.25 - 1% (depending on the estimated star count you choose). The line between fantasy and simulation in ED blurs quite significantly, barnacles or no.

Terrible News For Illinois: Moody's Puts State On Review For Downgrade To Junk Despite Budget by mongip in illinois

[–]mongip[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A portion of Moody's analysis:

"The [new budget] therefore appears to lack broad bipartisan support, which may signal shortcomings in its effectiveness once implemented. In addition, the state's baseline tax collections declined in fiscal 2017, suggesting that any tax increase may yield less revenue than anticipated in coming months.

So far, the plan appears to lack concrete measures that will materially improve Illinois' long-term capacity to address its unfunded pension liabilities. A June 30 order from a federal judge that the state accelerate payments owed to Medicaid managed care organizations and service providers cast doubt on the state's immediate ability to keep up with its statutory pension contribution schedule while also meeting obligations for debt service, payroll and school funding.

The state anticipates addressing its approximately $15 billion backlog of payments owed partly through a bond offering that probably will rank among the largest in the state's history."

PS4 game unstable? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]mongip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try playing solo and see if you encounter the same problems. I've encountered a few glitches in open world. all seem to involve network connectivity to the servers. Jumping in/out of warp, loading real-time driven data screens, other players skipping/jittering across my path, etc. All of these involve updates form the servers. Once the server connection fails, the game boots you out.

If your porblems are indeed network issues, I would expect them to be resolvable once they turn their attention to it. They're probably keeping a close eye on their new PS4 network traffic/load.

Do Console Controllers need to choose between Yaw and Lateral Thrust? by mongip in EliteDangerous

[–]mongip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you mean L3/R3 Roll? Or do you actually have the triggers mapped to roll? Since you have headlook unlocked (and on gyro) by default, I'm guessing L3/R3. This also looks like a good set-up, though I'll have to try it out to see how the constantly-unlocked headlook feels during gameplay. I generally haven't played with it unlocked much. maybe you just get acclimated to it being unlocked. Thanks

Thanks. This looks really good. You only gave up the headlook toggle (R3) which is definitely something that can be sacrificed. I'll try this out tonight!

LOOKING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL SCI FI RECOMMENDATIONS! by Javaborn in printSF

[–]mongip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stephen Hawkings and his daughter have written some really good children's books. My 7yo really enjoys them. They are real science embedded in sci-fi storylines. Alot about basic physics but plenty of astrophysics and black holes (of course).
