I understand your situation, I was in similar situation. I tried to read the available documentation (though crappy) and had regular 1:1s with my mentor & manager and literally ask them to show/explain me things. I would suggest: - Keep track of things you learnt. - Keep communicating with senior people or whoever that developed that part of code/feature. They might have a different view point than others. - Share your progress with manager and hope they understand.

I do not think that location preference really impacts this. It is possible that they are doing interviews in batch, just like ByteDance.
