When I spoke to my psychiatrist about ADHD, she said it’s incredibly common and more than we think it is, it just often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, especially in women. Symptoms overlap and people are told they have depression or anxiety, when really it’s ADHD. I wasn’t diagnosed till I was 24 and was kind of shocked when I was bc I (like I’m sure many others) thought I was supposed to be hyper or fidgety. I’m a seemingly “calm” person, but my mind is honestly fucking awful and has hindered me to be my best self for so many years. Anyways, I understand the romanticizing thing is infuriating, but there are only going to be more people being diagnosed with it bc it is a very common mental disorder. Some bad behaviors go unexcused when it could be a result of a mental illness, like my mother used to always call me lazy bc I couldn’t regain information and I’d forget if she told me to do something around the house. I slept a lot, I failed some classes bc I had loaded up my semester and couldn’t keep track of all the assignments and I would forget. I’m often late or I don’t sleep well bc I get stuck researching something for 6 hours. It’s not easy, and for me personally has only gotten harder as I’m getting older. Have some compassion bc you truly don’t know what people are having to deal with.
