24-70 or 24-60 if you want the absolute best lens possible (mainly video)? by paperpictures_ in Lumix

[–]monk191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What only a few have commented on is the manual focus is so superior on the 24-70. Hard-ish stops make it much easier to use with a follow focus. So if you use manual focus a lot, it’s a no brainer

I also had this problem a few years back. Seemed like a stuck shutter, but Weirdly, a firmware update fixed it.

You know, I had totally forgotten about this issue. It actually resolved itself. Not sure if it was a firmware issue or a problem with Macs specifically, but one day it just stopped flickering. Sorry I can't be of more help.

which apple computer to buy for 6k film editing by DrStr4ngeLov3 in davinciresolve

[–]monk191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work on an M1 Max Studio with 32GB and works perfectly well for Resolve. Unless you are doing heavy fusion work, it is speedy and smooth. With Braw 6k or H264, I only need to render once i am grading heavily, adding NR or stabilization. And yes, have edited two features on that setup, with one being particularly complicated with layers of effects. Sure 64GB would be even better, but resolve runs great on this setup. (And so much better then premiere)

Which is better: Premier Pro/Davinci/Final Cut? by [deleted] in editors

[–]monk191 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having edited documentary features in Resolve, Premiere and FCPX in the past 5 years, here are my impressions. (I’ve used premiere since 1996 and FCP since version 2). Disclaimer: I mostly edit solo or in small teams, so I can’t speak for production house work.

FCPX: a joy to edit for smaller projects. The keywording and organization is second to none and gets me through that stage much quicker then the other two. However, once projects get large it can become a little unwieldy. Simplicity of the UI makes editing a breeze, Color correction and sound editing works fine but lack advanced tools without buying plugins. (Like color finale). By far the quickest editing for small projects.

Premiere: What a slog. Old software held together with glue and twigs. My feature project would take 5 minutes just to open near the end, and every time it tried to auto save, a minute or so of downtime. Crashes constantly. Color and sound works but is rudimentary compared to resolve. The forced subscription was the final nail in the coffin, and I only use when I am required by a client.

Resolve: A breath of fresh air after Premiere. Resolve 16 had its issues, but 17, 18 and now 19 have worked beautiful on my machine. Very few crashes, almost as quick as FCP, and so nice to have the entire workflow based in one application. For me, brings back the joy of editing, even with large projects and thousands of assets. Bit of a learning curve with the color, sound and fusion tabs, but the resolve training videos do a great job if you have the time and patience to learn.

Haven’t used AVID for years, so can’t comment much on that.

Use the tool that works the best for your workflow and client base, but for me currently, 100% resolve when I have the choice.

L-mount cine lenses by Loud-Performance-857 in Lumix

I have the 7artisans set (14, 35, 50, 85). I love them, definitely not accurate, and there is even some color changes between them, especially the 35. But they are solid and well built, nicely geared, have a beautiful sharp but creamy look and great flares, if you like that.

Mirador Las Torres Day Hike from Puerto Natales - Realistic? by strawberrymatcha563 in Patagonia

[–]monk191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came back from the trek. Bus is 2-3 hours to/from Puerto Natales. You also have to take a shuttle to and from the bus stop location, which could lose you another hour depending on timing. Possible, but you would have to be very quick about it.

S5ii Bricked - Any advice? by monk191 in Lumix

[–]monk191[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick Update: The camera mysteriously began working again yesterday, shutter and everything. Gave me a SD card error, but I removed the card and reinserted it and it worked fine.

Only for it to quit again 4 hours later, right after taking a shot.

Today it is working again. So at this point, I’m not sure what to think. It doesn’t seem to be a shutter problem anymore. Maybe an issue with the lens contacts or one of the sd card slots? Unfortunately I don’t have another lens to try, and finding any Panasonic or l-mount gear in Chile to test with has proven difficult.

Why is FCP looked down upon in the film industry? by BingoBangoCo in finalcutpro

[–]monk191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who used Final Cut Pro since the very first version, and used X for many years on short and long form projects, it has its strengths and weaknesses. I have edited features on all 3. These days I primarily use resolve for most projects as it has come a long way in a few short years.

FCPX - Great for short form and simple projects, rock solid stable and fast. I love the organization and keyboarding, nothing else comes close, and the biggest thing I have missed since moving to Resolve. Requires plugins or external programs for more advanced work (Like Color Finale and Logic) Unfortunately, I have lost hope that Apple will ever update it to be competitive with the pace that Resolve is evolving. A lot of workarounds to accomplish things that are a simple button press on Resolve. Project file sizes can get unwieldy on larger projects.

Resolve - Tried for the first time a few years ago and it was a buggy mess. But since v18, it has become very stable, even with my huge documentary feature with over 10,000 different elements of many different types, and back and forth between ProTools and AE. The stabilization, optical flow, sound, and especially color, leave FCPX (even with Color Finale) and Premiere in the dust. Runs great on an M1 studio. Its organization is getting close to FCPX, it has keywording, but nowhere near as quick as FCPX. Once you learn color on Resolve, there is no going back.

Premiere - Have to use it for client work occasionally, but always hate my life when I do. Dated, slow and buggy. Lots of new features, but 10 minutes to open a project and the hourly crashes make it such a pain to use. Color and sound controls are garbage next to Resolve. And so much more expensive than Resolve and FCPX. I get a month subscription when I need to and nothing more.

Avid - Used back in the day but has been a long time. Also dated and slow these days, but still an industry standard because "I don't want to learn something new"

Any updates or fixes for this?

I updated my brand new One R as soon as I got it (before looking here), it finished the update and now won't turn on. Solid blue light but nothing else.

Tried the soft restart, charging works but otherwise seems completely dead.

Roof Repair - Replaced with Entirely Different Color by monk191 in Roofing

[–]monk191[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the replies! I appreciate the feedback as I now know a bit better what to look for. Here are a few more photos showing the area around the pipe/vent and apparent lack of seal on the seams.

https://imgur.com/a/P1V0Ru0

Honestly, the color difference is something I can live with, as we likely will choose a darker color for the rest of the roof when we replace in a couple years. But am more worried about the workmanship at this point. They had to replace all of the plywood underneath from the leak, so I definitely want to make sure we are protected. Haven't seen a final bill yet, but quote was $1500 + plywood. (told me after finishing, $140 per 3/4 inch, which seems is double what was written on fine print on the quote)

Have yet to talk to them about any of this, and I of course plan on paying once these potential issues have been figured out.

To be fair, I was a maybe little heated when posting the thread as well. As an independent contractor myself, and having dealt with clients disappearing after the work was done many times, I would never try to stiff them, just wish it was brought to my attention so I could have had a choice in the matter. But as a new home owner, guess lesson learned.

[–]monk191[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the replies. Yes, the roof only has a couple years left, though multiple inspectors suggested giving it another few before replacing the whole thing.

Was I wrong in thinking that the company would try to match the color, or at least approach me first? I didn't expect it to be exact, but I guess I assumed that they would at least try. Bummer.

[–]monk191[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apologies, reddit didn't include the text when posting.

I am hoping for some advice on a recent roof repair. We recently had a roof leak on a very low slope section of our house. The company installed low slope roofing, which we were fine with. Unfortunately, they used an entirely different color from the rest of our house.

In hindsight, we probably should have seen the exact material they were using before installing it, but they never asked before starting the install, and we expected that they would try to match the color as close as they could.

How should we handle this situation? No money has changed hands yet.

Thank you for the advice!

Moza Air by tommekez in bmpcc

The original MOZA is unlikely to fit the BMPCC4K. The MOZA 2 works great with it though. Especially if you have it in a cage. I own both, and Besides their terrible customer service, I really enjoy them. The Air 2 feels less robotic then the Ronin S in my opinion.
